  • The mist beckons, so that must be time for Web DM to review Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft! Overall, we really like a lot of this book! It's a great introduction to running RPGs in the horror genre. But we think it could go further! Here's our honest review where we discuss what we like and what we'd change if it were up to us.

    Comedy-Horror is such a difficult tightrope! Some stories that have achieved it appear to have done so almost accidentally; I think of the pulp dark comedy-horror Army of Darkness or Mandy. Those stories that prompt a gut chuckle out of the viewer, while horrific things are happening. Then there's the more nuanced blend of the two, like the meta-satire of Tucker & Dale vs Evil; VERY hard to do successfully. Great commentary in here, thanks!

    2nd and 3rd Edition Ravenloft had the Core Domains; Domains that shared a land border with political tensions between Darklords. It was superb. There were also Islands of Terror which were Domains surrounded on all sides by the Mists.
    5e Ravenloft loses all this and barely counts as a campaign setting. If you want to run Ravenloft, get hold of the 2nd Edition setting (Domains of Dread) or the 3rd Edition Ravenloft campaign setting from DMsguild. Sprinkle in the 5e Ravenloft mechanics for flavour.

      @@Satchmojones I think you might be look at this a little backward my friend. The fact that the DM is doing all of the work, perhaps he shouldn't be forced to explain away why you are in x or y domain now. Instead you are the one making the choice. Plus he's the DM, if you are making a player a mistwalker, you are obviously going to limit the amount of domains they can walk to. Indeed having a second sounds like a good way to mix up the pace of things a bit. Especially if you make the two places kind of at odds. Your party might be prepared for realm one, but realm two might be a death trap.

    A great spot for injecting horror back into the game is typically right after a moment of levity… a player makes a joke in a particularly tense section your description of the location like a rustling in the shadows or bushes… “it’s your mom” moment, ha ha ha… a screaming mimi runs out of the darkness and leaps onto the PC, you’re now grappled & prone… an adorable fluffy bunny hops out of the bushes while looking for the lycanthrope in the forest, “awww… how cute!”, it’s head splits open to reveal a fanged mass of teeth that lets forth a guttural roar spraying you in the face with thick strands of mucus-like saliva, it reshapes itself back into a Thumper and scurries back into the forest, you hear a howl in the wind, make a perception check to gage the distance, and back to the search…

    The book was enjoyable to read for the most part, but it felt very scattershot and unfocused. The bizarre retcons presented in the fluff of the book also really feel like the main authors took umbrage with the older setting, and just wanted to change it to fit their ideas of how it should work. Turning the core into a strange, unconnected series of novelty towns and cities where trade and travel are nearly impossible, that is just a bad world building decision to put it lightly. In one of the port cities they go out of their way to say no trade ever arrives, and never explain how these people haven't starved years ago.
    Less said about what they did to Ezmerelda the better, also.

    When Jim mentioned KULT I was blown away. Though I never played the game reading it made a huge impact. The world building is amazing. The rules and the world are perfectly tied together to produce a mind**** or gaslight effect on the players, assuming they understand 1+% of the deranged history and universal laws that the GM has at his/her fingertips in the setting. It still seems like a game that must be tried sometime. But I want to be a player for it, not the GM. And that's the problem. Chaosium's competing product - Nephilim, tried to get the same effect but was not crazed enough. Well, unless you combine Call of Cthulhu with Nephilim and that's a pretty darn good precis for KULT.

    The campaign I’m going to run eventually in Ravenloft is one I’ve been calling “Quantum Leap: Ravenloft”
    Basically, the group will make a set of character archetypes - personalities, bonds, flaws, rough backgrounds etc, and then the individual adventures involve those characters waking up in a new domain as a new person - the old soldier goes from Bladesinger to Paladin to Fighter to War Cleric.
    And so each adventure we’d play different builds but be running the same characters, in these different worlds. It’d also let us do round robin which would be great because I want to play a character for once

    I have two character using the reborn and dhampir lineages
    the dhampir I took the spider climb literally, so i made him a small humanoid tarantula man with a rich mustache guy type accent, whos a druid of the flame that used to actually be a tarantula until he stepped in magic goo
    the reborn i took elements from the weapon devils of chainsaw man and the body of alfonz from FMA, and put it into a hollow suit of armor who has broken free of this evil assassination group from a crime organization, and had them be a beast barbarian, reflavoring their weapons as blades shields and needle mouth lance, with soul wisps popping out of her every so often, and spew out when ragging.
    I realy like playing both due to their straight forward attitude and their strive to make something more of themselves than just they are dhampir and reborn(not that the druid knows hes a dhampir)

  • @eliinthewolverinestate6729

    I thought each Domain had a spot in it's world it came from. There is an evil druid that runs Strad's domain in Greyhawk. Near the Tomb of Annihilation. Shadowdale and Shadowfell. To give you idea's how places are linked and there alternate lands. I love to make characters think they slaughtered a village but was really evil twins of p.c's. Swap them in the mist to get them to slay a village of horrors. Then switch back to regular world where a group of characters that looks just like them had slain the village. That nice gray area like the twilight zone. My lawful good player hated it. They lost and were killed by their evil twins later too.

    Horror and D&D 5e don't seem like they are a good mix. It is hard to be afraid of a monster when you are a superhero. And its frustrating to play a game about killing monsters where you are dealing with something that you cannot stop unless like Curse of Strahd, you are on a path to destroy that monster. But I never really felt like I was playing a horror game in that module, it was most just a miserable setting that felt limited.

      That's a good insight and we can see where you're coming from

    • @A2forty
      @A2forty Před 2 lety

      It is all about how the DM runs it. Paranoia, a constant drain on resources, feeling failure because the forces still seemed to kill the npc even if the town was saved, and making any dark act by the players (no murder hobo at the least, but even trying to save the bad guys instead of just killing them) be a slippery slope to evil really gives the mood even if the players characters are powerful.

    • @dylanba5251
      @dylanba5251 Před 2 lety

      @@A2forty The difference being some systems support the DM in creating that atmosphere and D&D 5e does not. 5e actively works against any such tone because all of its mechanics are superheroic and many abilities and spells can solve much of the issues. I recall Strahd trying to scare us by taking control but nope the Devotion Paladin makes the party immune to charm.

    • @A2forty
      @A2forty Před 2 lety

      @@dylanba5251 true but mechanics alone don't create storytelling and even in things like call of Cthulhu the players are above average. The DM is the architect and arbiter of information and the biggest determiner of horror is the unknown.
      Also make Strhad so powerful that he can break that. Make it so the devotion pally gives a bonus or advantage to charm saves instead of immunity. This is why session 0 is so important, you establish the tone of the game. If the players know that some monsters are so powerful that they break the rules of reality (which is basically what is happening in ravenloft) then they aren't going to be complaining when something like that happens

    • @dylanba5251
      @dylanba5251 Před 2 lety

      @@A2forty So your solution is to nerf the mechanics that area already too strong? Clearly there is a problem when you have to change things. Going to amazon, it appears the only complaints (low star reviews) about the book is that some of the domains are not as feature rich as past editions, and all the wokenings happening in the setting to accommodate a wider player base by those who find it overly tedious to consider one's players feelings when playing a horror-based setting. I personally prefer d100 tables too, because they can be immediately used in any side-quest that is just a little off kilter. Good review. Still not a big enough fan to care to get it though.
