Chinese heaven is also one of the most organized divine bureaucracy in the world. Instead of all the infighting like in Greek/Norse mythology, Chinese gods work towards the same goal for the most part, and Gods are willing to work with demons to achieve a better goal if needed be.

I wonder if it's a reflection of the cultures and beliefs of the countries/societies where those myths originate from? Western gods tend to be more combative and conflict-prone than Eastern ones, who tend to be more peaceful and diplomatic by comparison (except for some, ofc)? Idk, just my personal observations. If you dive deep into Western vs Eastern cultures, you will find lots of different and contrasting elements.
Monkey king sounds like a total badass. His story reminds me of Herakles and Gilgamesh.
Thanks so much for all those stories. I find Chinese mythology very complex and not that well known.
Hyy....if u do some research in hindu mythology you may get some answers of monkey king....we hindu say him as hanuman....and the story of hanuman is so similar or so same with monkey king even the characteristics.... And as at the last the buddha calmed him down we have lord ram how calmed him down and then the story goes to the west and south of asia
@@bhavinpatel1449 thanks, I know about Lord Hanuman and Ramayana, not in much detail though. I always considered him as very strong and powerful deity.
Jaroslav Doležel sun wukong has great balls of steel
For being called the great sage of equal heaven or dasheng
This is why my favorite character is sun wukong
And it's lucky tho coz my lunar animal is monkey
i guess similar to hanuman
I haven’t watched the video yet but when I was little monke king was a monkey that can just shove a stick in his ear
Pangu reminds me a lot of Ymir from Norse Mythology. Both were primordial giants, both had influences over the creation of the world and both formed their respective lands with their body parts and blood. It’s eerie how similar the comparisons are.
Its the Social Collective unconscience.
I'm here to brush up on my Chinese mythology to play Black Myth: Wukong!
yo fr same!!!!!
I appreciate this finally someone who actually wants to know about more Chinese Gods and not just bandwag Wukong.
I liked sun wukong before the game but I wanna know more either way
I can’t wait to get my hands on that game
Wukong is definitely my favorite god of them all
that's good. I'm waiting for the game so bad
1) 盘古开天辟地 "Panku open the sky and split the earth"
2)女娲造人 "Niuwa creates mankind"
Chinese creation mythology. My mom read it to me when I was five and I'm gonna read it to my son when he's five.
3)伏羲造阴阳 “ God FuXi created Yin(power of earth)and Yang(power of sky), men have Yang power and women have Yin power.
4)大禹治水 “ Emperor Yu actually is also god,he stoped the flood in his smart way.

So happy you started the video with Kuan Yin. I adore her and she has so much history she could get a video all on her own! Good job, thank you for sharing all these tales.
I like Guan Yu. He was a faithful brother to Liu Bei and Zhang Fei, one of the Five Tiger Generals of Shu Han, badass crescent dragon blade, and his beard is magnificent.
my Chinese friend, in response to a Christian who was trying to convert him, retorted "why should I pray to your god when we Chinese have so many of our own, many even better than yours". this statement reverberates my mind even now. China is so rich culture and they should be proud of their ancestry and inheritance.
Rajeshwar Sharma mm Not trying to convert or anything lol But what I even see some christians miss is ...because of the philosophy probably of loving everyone that does come in the New Testament, however I'm not convinced by the Old Testament. Jesus said to love the women, the men, the sinners or people who made mistakes, the sick, the healthy, those who shared their faith and those who didn't, the "cursed", the poor, the rich, etc. I'm sure chinese gods are amazing, though I'm a bit ignorant to what extent their teachings affect humanity. For me to try to love and respect everyone sounds deep, beautiful and complete. It conducts to peace, to being honorable, to be honest, to respect others (family and elders of course, but literally everyone) which for me conducts to the biggest values of life, and even solves ethical problems. So for me it's more about their philosophy than believing someone to have powers (on any religion) ♡ I try to approach this in a more rational manner rather than basically magic. I may be wrong on the belief but I do believe that Love for myself and all humanity are 100% right. Again I don't stand by the old Testament, it makes me doubt a lot... but at least Jesus's teachings ring Truth to me. Hope this clears a bit of this topic! I don't talk on the name of christians or anything (to some of them I may not even be exactly christian, because I'm catholic, Idk how to explain this in english rn), this is just what I have researched ♡ And If you want to teach me something I don't know about chinese gods feel free ^^ I like to learn. Currently I want to read Confucius who is considered super wise, though I've heard that he still places the unit before the individual which I'm not 100% convinced about, but hey, I will check it out! I like keeping an open mind and learn fascinating things about other cultures.
All God is good
none of those chinese gods promised you heaven and eternal life.
The Chinese people's beliefs are complex, just like Chinese culture, because after 4,000 years of development, it has never been interrupted. China's popular ancestor worship and bloody sacrifices in the Shang Dynasty, Taoism appeared in the Zhou Dynasty, Taoism for the Chinese It is very important that many of China's mythical figures are from Taoism. In fact, Taoism cannot be regarded as a kind of religion. It is a kind of philosophical thought. The same Han Dynasty Buddhism was introduced to China and was localized. Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism were finally Incorporate together, in which Confucianism requires everyone to strictly demand themselves and make their morals perfect, but Confucianism never talks about life and death. Confucius said, if you can't understand the meaning of life, how can you know the death?
so instead of 1 imaginary friend chinese have few hundred.
Why is it always the palace of the eastern dragon king that gets destroyed.
Henry von Rintelen Because he's a bitch. I assume we're talking Ao Kuang?
he's the most powerful of all the dragon kings, to show anyone who's more powerful than dragons, they target him.
Because the western dragon king would be on the other side of Europe. The southern dragon king would be below India, and the northern dragon king would be above Russia. All of which is kind of out of the way for Chinese history, myth, and legend to really talk about.
Is Red Boy Ne Zhe? I don't know TONS about Taoist legends
Ah ok.
To further draw links between the characters here, some say that the magical rock that eventually gives birth to the Monkey King (Wukong) is a leftover of the stone of five colors used by the Goddess of Creation (Nvwa) to repair the broken sky, which in my opinion makes the story even more epic.
什么有人说?看看原书,孙悟空是书中产物,就是灵石剩下来的
Honorable mention: Guan Yu, god of war, and actually a real person in the period following the fall of the Han dynasty! Probably couldn't beat Sun Wukong though.
Would probably outsmart him though
Guan Yu was a real person in history being worshipped as a god by people, the real god of war of China Myth is called Xing Tian
Personally, when I hear powerful Gods, my mind tends to go to my favorite character, Sun Wukong. Sure, he's technically not a God, but he's still up there.
Chaos/Havoc in Heaven is a great story.
I totally grew up with these gods! It's so nice to hear the origins now as an adult as I only have my Vietnamese dramas from long ago.
I am a staunch Buddhist, but I am curious about some of the Chinese gods having watched Sun Wukong in Journey to the West 1986 series many times. With the exception of Tathagata (Buddha), Guanyin Goddess (Goddess of Mercy) is the most powerful and often comes to help Sun Wukong and the Tang priest. At the end of the journey, Sun Wukong was appointed as the Victorious Fighting Buddha. The thing I want to know is this ~ who is more powerful? Sun Wukong or Erlang Shen? Erlang Shen is the nephew of the Jade Emperor, the 2nd most popular god after Guayin, the best warrior general in Heaven.
⚖
as a Christian, i agree. It is very interesting. As for your question, Considering that they actually fought at one point IIRC, at a time when Erlang had every reason to be going all out while Wukong has later feats showing that he wasn't even close to going full force, yeah Wukong wins.
@@jonathangoodwin5609 So, it is confirmed. Sun Wukong, the Victorious Fighting Buddha is more powerful than Erlang Shen, the best and most powerful warrior god.
This was soo cool.! Chinese mitology is so full of wonders, thank you for this video.! Wish to see more of this in the upcoming videos.!!

Forgive me my spelling! Pangu (The God who held up the skies for 18,000 years) sounds a lot like our God (for Māori and Pacific Island Nations) of The Forest and progenitor of Man - Tane which is the same word for "Man".
Love this Channel 💯👍💯🙌
I love the story of sun wu kong. Please keep on making videos like this
Thanks! We're definitely going to make more Chinese culture related videos, so keep an eye out for our future content!
Technically, Sun Wu kong is not a god or diety. He is just a character from a novel that get popularized by an ancient audience who loved the tale. But one can also argued that his is probably how alot of god and dieties came to be in ancient human societies.
I appreciate videos like this, where the creators get as excited as I do about myths and legends.
thanks Mike for posting these video. and I hope you make more of it bc I enjoyed it very much. Im not chinese but I grew up with family that love ancient Chinese drama. I know every single god you just talk about, I love the old version of those. journey to the west is bestttt! chinese story is so interesting, I can never get enough. 😄plz make more . thnky.
No problem, and thank you so much for all the support!
I've always heavily adored journey to the west, despite Tripitaka (hope i spelt that right) being the main character, Sun Wukong has always been my favorite. His iconic characteristics has always been my favorite thing, how he was born, his stubbornness and his determination, and more ofc. Hes such a lovable character (imp).

Dragon king of the east Ao Guang is like the punching bag of Chinese mythology
Thank you for the video. I am Daoist and have a shrine to Jade Emperor in my home.
I'm surprised you didn't include Shen Er Long. He was powerful and strategic as well!
He`s Er Lang Shen, not Shen Er Long bro. Shen means god in Chinese, not a family name
I've always found mythology very interesting. Being a Touhou fan makes me immediatley compare these to Japanese mythology and see where certian Japanese legends came from. I also compare it to the legends of other places (such as similarities with Ymir and Pangu as well as Nu wa and Prometheus) as well as scientific theory due to my own religion combining all religions and emphasising modern science.
I'm also happy with the name change
aListers ikr? Another parallel: I think I remember another promethean deity (I think from one of the new world mythologies) who formed humans from mud but as he was going got drunk and his work got sloppy. When he sobered up realized he'd made many people with physical disabilities. In his guilt he devoted himself to watching over them before all others.
Fun fact, Meiling is likely a reference to the story of the coi jumping over the gate of Dragon to become a real dragon.
Japanese people came from China
Ion Huang Yes but those Chinese travellers mixed with Ainu and Jomon upon arrival on the islands, making them ethnically unique.
Agreed! Cant stop keeping up with vid like this!
Watching Nezha and the monkey king kick ass were highlights of my childhood.
Chinese mythology, paintings and music is so mystical, colourful and nice.
Why Chinese mythology is very familiar with Hindus

I don’t know if it’s the difference in culture. But my monk who is Vietnamese told me that Kwan Yin was once a princess. But her father hated her because she wasn’t a boy. She grew up with hate but only wanted to be love so she tried her best. Her father passed away and was sent to hell. She wanted him to come out of hell but she had to sacrificed her arm. She did so and brought her father back. Buddha saw Kwan Yin and gave her 1000 arms to not only help her father but help everyone around the world.
Fun Video braw! Hey let's do a history of Guan Yu!!!

The fact that I know the details to all these myths makes me rethink my life
pangou's creation is a bit similar to "in the beginning there was chaos..."
How many creation myths are there that starts with "in the beginning there was chaos"???
@@shanedoesyoutube8001 myths are actually way more interesting than just stories. I can't speak for all myths but the Greek story of creation is very close to a fairytale version of the big bang and the cooling of the earth and theories like that. They also have a big flood story. Myths are understandable versions of natural phenomena before the invention of books. Since these were passed down as stories they had to be comprehensive for everyone. Educated or not.
@@BansheeVanRaven well yeah but as I asked, *HOW MANY???*
*How many* are there do we know of our collective ancestors explaining the beginning of the universe as "in the beginning, there was chaos"???
@@shanedoesyoutube8001 I'd assume all that had a religion. Even Christianity has a version but they changed it from chaos to logos (the word)for some reason.
Just a thought on Pangu. When you said that Pangu's spirit became the spirit turned into humans. Now that explains why Shinnok's ending in MKX turned out the way it was.
Chinese Mythology is very complicated and incredibly massive, since we adopt characters from literatures throughout the dynasties as gods, sometimes we also pray to historical figures (关公,诸葛亮), and often times land gods 地祖公, stove gods 灶神, wealth god 财神, sky gods(天神的翻译?), etc. We also pray to our ancestors literally, setting up shrines for elders that had passed away.
Religion for Chinese people is embedded with heavy essence of culture especially Taoism, I don’t have a specific religion but my family do follow the customs of both Taoism and Buddhism. However, Chinese in different parts of the world would worship different gods, for example in Taiwan and some coastal parts of China people pray to Ma Zu (妈祖), who protects sailors or those who travel on the sea.
I'm a Malaysian Chinese and we pray to all kinds of gods, my home also has a shrine for GuangYin, land god and sky god, and we're a modern family. Basically it’s normal for us to have a shrine(not massive ones lol)for gods, just like Christians put crosses in their homes. Even if we might not be particularly religious we just have them as a tradition.
Loky Says sir as same like the Hindus of pakistan Sindh pray to jhulelaal the avatar of sea God Varun.....
They are part of our culture even before the rise of first Jew....
I like that how communism in China favoured and respect Chinese culture at utmost highest regard but in India communist not theyvwant to adopt Christianity and western following
China always cheer for that ..😊
@@Zayn_Priyadarshin That's because you did not see what the party does with the Himalayas...Terrible this censorship, and destroy any religion without discrimination is Hindu, Taoist, Buddhist, Islamic or Christian...Censorship affects everything and the government is willing to kill, especially the last two.
The Communist government even uses the Confucius who is in the Chinese culture to establish and continue their power, but it is with the precepts completely distorted.
As for the resemblance between religions, I agree...In fact, there are few real distinctions.
In fact, including the Chinese way of praising gods as well as the Hindu, they are similar to how one does with saints in Christian strands...And the existential philosophies too, so the Orient is not so different from the West religiously.
So only communism that harms us by isolating such nations.
Admit, and the situation in India I do not understand much.

I thought 哪吒 beaten up the Dragon King son,敖丙,not the dragon king,in fact because Neza killed his son,the dragon king forced 李靖,his dad to kill his own son or he will make tsunamis destroy the village,Neza, not wanting to trouble his dad or the village, killed himself in front of the dragon king
Sophie Yang No, that's Neza's story, there's only one, he angered the dragon king and had to kill himself, after he died he went to his Taoist master and the master gave him a body made of lotus flower, leaves and roots and blew an air of life into the body and revived him, later Neza became a deity and so did his father 托塔李天王. Mike only said a part of the story
Blue Kimono he beat up both
He killed 敖丙 and beaten east sea dragon king
Neza vs Dragons is in 封神演义, in Journey to the West Neza is arse is being hand to him by Sun Wu Kong... lol
Its Nezha
Its crazy how ancient people just made up a god and were like:
ya imma devote my life to this now.
Glad you're going with Chen Dynasty.
Can't disappoint the viewers, heheh
For accuracy: 钟馗's image was used for 阎王's story; 哪吒 killed Dragon King's son; Monkey King's somersault is 108,000 li (21,675km / 13,468 miles) ; 太上老君 who captured Monkey King is NOT 老子. Awesome narration nevertheless. Thumbs up!
I'm sorry, sir, but I sadly don't understand Mandarin or Cantonese, so is it possible for you to Romanize the words. I'm sorry, I just don't know how to read the language.

3 million deceiving demons that lead your soul to hell
MISTERPRESIDENTELECT Gods, not demons. Demons originate from Indo-European pagan mythologies.
They were human/animal freaks which are dead and discomposed, their souls dwell in hell.
Only the chosen people stayed loyal to the true God, and after the miracle of Christ all intelligent people threw away demon worship and took up Christianity. Fools will carry on towards a dead end.
Bible;
" For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."

I'm a Buddhist from Bhutan and m proud of it....
The first one is like the mixture of Virgin Mary (mercy and purity) and a hindu deity (multiple heads and hands).
The man who broke the egg...he reminds me Atlas.
DuskSunDawn
觀世音菩薩 is indeed a Buddhist goddess / deity; her name in Sanskrit is Avalokiteshvara and was originally portrayed as a male in ancient India. There are plenty of parallels between Buddhist and Hindu deities since all of them came from India so I'm not exactly surprised there
Virgin Mary year 300-400
Guan Ying 100 B.C
The aspects of appearance and character owe a lot to influence from Jesuit missionaries sent by the Portugese by way of Macao in the 1600's. Before then, Guan Ying was more unusual and bore more resemblance to the Buddhist deity introduced from India around 400 B.C.
It's different. Guan Yin is Avalokitesvara and she didn't have a child during her life as human. And she sits on the lotus while Virgin Mary always stands up on her feet ( can be seen on all the statues all over the world ).
Thank you so much for making these videos! You're videos are always so interesting. I've watched many of them more than once, and no matter how many times I watch them they're still so much fun to watch!
Journey to the west 2008 was life changing. I used to work backstage in Shen Yun but never saw the show. The music and laughter could be heard all the way back in our employee area. I've seen all of Stephen Chows films and I'm convinced. Jesus spent some time in China learning and teaching. Maybe not the christian/catholic Jesus but something of God has touched all the people in his kingdom. One way or another God will reveal himself to you. No matter your language, nationality, or quality of soul. See you next year.
Your perspective as a specialized Chinese historian/mythologist is so refreshing compared to general world history channels that only scrape the surface or completely ignore China.
My favorite mythological story of god is the story of Nezha
This is truly beautiful. Throughout my life and in my personal spiritual quest I have studied the many different deities throughout the world and have always found comfort in the spiritual contributions of beautiful China. Thank you for sharing and educating.
I really love Chinese culture :3 please keep doing more of these
All the mythologies all over the world have so many similarities!!
I thaught that Indian and European mythologies r very similar, but that was explainable bcoz of Indo-European connection. But even Chinese legends r so similar. Like the *flood myth* of Chinese, Indian & Biblical legends(but same flood myth is common in almost all the cultures).
Guan-yin is exactly same as Hindu deity of compassion, Gauri. But that is explainable bcoz "Chandi"(a many handed and many headed form of Gauri) became popular in Buddhism as "Cundi" which was transported to China along with Buddhism; she became Guan-yin.
But there r many other amazing similarities like story of Pangu which is *exactly same* as Hindu Vedic story of "Hiranyagarbha"; and such "Golden egg myth" is also popular in some European cultures. And *Yang-wang* is same as Hindu deity *Yama.*
Yin and Yang is similar to "Yoni and Ling" symbolism in Hinduism.
Also dragons are similar to Nagas and Monkey King is similar to many legends in India like that of powerful Hanuman (except that he was not that mischievous but kind).
Is it possible that all the cultures were part of a global ancient proto-civilization??
I Love this stuff!😍😍😍

Dragon kings are always bullied by other gods (e.g Nezha and Monkey King) so they are exactly powerful. Maybe can switch to Er Lang shen or Tai Shang Lao Jun, yuan shi tian jun and lingbao tianjun (Taoist trinity). But of cos there is not much story about the trinity available :D
i love your passion for these tales. keep em coming. ;)
It's refreshing to learn about mythological Gods and Goddesses that are ACTUALLY decent people. The only nice Greek God (that I know of) is Hephaestus.
what about hestia
Awestning Never forget Hestia ;)
Hestia was the nicest of the gods
Awestning and Hades
And in Chinese myth the creation god died!!!!
I like it when you do these videos keep them coming.
so Mike you missed one of ultimate gods, the one who gave Guanyin her powers..... Amitabha
Amitabha isn't really a God, he's a Buddha.
After studying many mythologies like hindus, greeks ,chinese ,japanese, norse,i can say there's lot of similarities....i just feel we are a big human tribe having seperated out and the ancient past being quoted differently in different regions.
Can you provide me similarities I would be your thankful. Please
God I so wish I could afford Shen Yun.
Hi Chen, the video was amazing I love it, really appreciate it spreading Chinese myth culture, but the pics are so blurred😂😂
The Chinese Gods are all so peaceful unlike the abrahamic west regions where you go to hell if you don't believe them. They should all change to Chinese Gods if they want to believe in God and peace will truly come then.

I am a Chinese and there is a movie about the little boy that has hula-hoops and about sun-wu-kong I watched both and it is beautiful I don't know about the Chinese gods and goddesses because I was not born in china but just please don't make fun of any gods or goddess just to get likes pls it is not nice to do that
Even Hinduism, have Lot of Gods, with supreme power!❤️😍🔥
I love Chinese Mythology but it does surprise me how much there is because of what Lao Tzu and the Buddha inspired of Far East culture. I'm surprised you didn't mention the Moon Goddess
