to my ears the remo nail that more sort of "vintage" sound, maybe more akin to stuff you'd hear on rock records up to the 90s, generally speaking, and the evans have a more "plasticky" rebounding sound - which *does* sound good, but they have a different color and attack to it that i might associate that kind of sound more with something like gospel or rnb styling. doesnt mean it wont work for a modern rock styling. i think ultimately it is up to feel when playing them, what feels good to the drummer, but both have a good sound to me. definitely helps to have heard them tuned up really nicely , thanks Dean!
i have them tuned for bottom end and short decay, they also sound great tuned up a bit which i currently have lately on this kit, purely personal to a large degree
I have a set of the First generation of the Yamaha Stage Custom drums and I have a mixture of clear and coated heads and the coated heads sound great actually! Great job and salute 🫡!!!
Hmm... i´m more the Remo guy, but sometimes i buy Evans too, because they sound good and only a little bit different. But the last time on one of my kits, the G2´s had a little less sustain and less overtones. If you don´t like overtones go for G2´s. I do like overtones, so Emperor. Because i can´t get overtones with the Evans G2´s, if do want less overtones, i can muffle the Emperor. And for example the EC2´s and the Pinstripe are sounding so similar, that in a blind test nearly no one could say... and in a band setting? No chance!
That's nicely put. I was an Evans g2 guy for years, and my latest kit came with emperors, so I finally sat and compared them all side by side and the remos ended up sounding better across the board. IN tune, or OUT of tune, high or low. the Evans had a much tighter sweet spot.
Comparing coated and clear heads? Hm. Sounding like compressed and EQed to me. All gets different when played live with other musicians. Nice playing btw.
using identical recording channels for both takes slightly processed, just heads were different, wasn’t about how raw they could sound, was about comparison under identical circumstances.
I’ve always said Evans have an almost wetter tone, but sometimes Remo can sound a little plasticky but ultimately more resonant if you get that tune just right!!! So basically Evans are easier to tune😂
@kemufreytes Not really , For true tone of the shell Remo is superior, I've been using evans g 2 CLEARS On an old yamaha , recording custom gigging kit, I've done about eighteen gigs so far This summer, I'm not always happy with the tone of the drums.I'm thinking about going back to remo. I've always used remo and I decided to try evans, Evans definitely go out of tune quicker In my experience.
😂😂😂REMO For superior tone... No comparison G1 TO Ambassador not a chance, G 2 To an emperor not a chance talking tone here... And I use evans and REMO.🥁
Yeah I like sinking in to a drum and hate when a drum head fights my stick as you describe as pushing the stick back I don’t like that. I think the Remo’s sound flat a bit because they are thick batter heads on a recording custom which do not resonate on my Gretsch the same heads sing like crazy. But you have your taste and that is how it go’s different strokes!
@@arringtonallen7263 See I like when I sink in to the head I don’t prefer bouncy. At the same time I can do either and I do like the sound of ec2’s here on youtube anyway I haven’t tried them I am a costed heads guy.

very well described, would def agree!
Muito bom o vídeo. Ajudou e muito a quem procura um novo som para a sua bateria. Sucesso para você.
Ive got Evans single ply coming Saturday and I’ll have them pitched about the way you are here with the same amount of resonance.
i have them tuned for bottom end and short decay, they also sound great tuned up a bit which i currently have lately on this kit, purely personal to a large degree
nice a thuddy both ranges
The differnece is not too big, but I think EC2 has more „plastic sound”, I preffer Remo 👍
nailed it, love the muted tones of the coated heads.

What do you mean by "plastic sound"?
@@kemufreytes Maybe more of an 80s sound? Hydraulic vibe - Just guessing here.
. It's nonsense that keeps getting regurgitated on forums
Remo for my Reggae, Evans for my Jazz, Funk set, nice recording picked up the tones, Evans sustain, Remo less sustain
totally agree

Remo anytime, there is room to maneuver. Evans is good but strict.

Both sound nice...dont be so picky...no one will hear the difference at a Bar😂😂😂

any of the double ply thicker heads are easier to tune, emperors are easier to tune than the ambassadors
You should have compaired the EC2's with the Remo Pin Stripes or the Emperors with coated G2's.
I was going back to remo coated, so i took the opportunity to compare
Do you have to put the heads on both sides or just the top?
yes heads are on both sides, in the 70s it was popular to remove the bottom heads.
14" is Remo Ambassador Coated
16
One has a little more attack. Which is it
remo emperor are def dryer more stick sound
@@DeanWuksta hi Dean, I enjoy your clips and drum footage.
Now throw some Evans coated G2s on and call it a day! Lol
Evans sound "good" in a way but very plasticy wet bubbley sound where Remo sounds like a drum like you can hear the wood
Wdym plasticy?
@kemufreytes Plastic, meaning you hear more of the Drum head and not the true tone of the drum shell.
@@vincentquattrocchi7924 Ah I get it. But, doesnt that depend on the tunning that you give the head, not so much said head?
@@kemufreytes it's the head. It's the same in every comparison. Remo is the best just gotta learn how to tune properly, it's worth it.

The real hero in this video is your snare sound.. holy shit.. how did you do that?
Thanks, I think that’s my maple gretsch, just tuning, compressed and some verb, head is worn.
Tuning and proper love
What reso heads did you have on with the emperors?
clear ambassadors
I prefer single ply heads on birch kits
interesting, why is that, and how do u tune, high med or low?
Are your Tom’s on a rack/stand ? Like to see your set up
plenty of vids with front cam
view, toms are mounted on the bass drum, no rack, I used to use them 20 years ago but prefer stands
Remo wins
Evans without a doubt. Best head on the market
😂😂😂REMO For superior tone... No comparison G1 TO Ambassador not a chance, G 2 To an emperor not a chance talking tone here... And I use evans and REMO.🥁
Remo
agreed!👍
On 14 floor tom remo ambassador, lol
EC2s sound balanced and controlled the Remos just sounded flat. It also looked like the EC2s push the stick back faster the Remo looked laboring.
I tend to agree, altho I don’t mind the dryer tone of the coated 👍
