Royal Canadian Navy sailor here, love to hear them sing. Fair winds, Statsraad Lehmukulhl
@anajinn l can swim. Some guys didn't when they joined. As was explained to me that's what boats were for. You see, l grew up in the prairies, and it's common to know how to swim, but guys who grew up on the cast here frequently didn't learn. But during recruit training everyone learned how to swim if they didn't already. Knots, yes, was taught but as I didn't used that skill regularly, I'm rather rusty as my trade didn't need a great deal of rope work.
@@exJacktar Many sailors could not swim because, if the vessel was sinking, they preferred to go down with it, rather than to keep swiming around in the water

@@ErikSundheim I love the sea, shanties and Art History. My dad was a Bosun in the US Merchant Marines. A Grandpa shipped out of Norway. His name was/is Olaf Hodne. Thank you for all that you do to keep this history alive.

Sounds like Haakon Vatle, he's the General Manager of the ship and the head man of Storm Weather Shanty Choir. Great chap.
Cool to hear sea shanties in a Scandinavian language, it sounds right.
What a weak applause for such a powerful performance....
Its a video capture thing and common at concerts and performances with mics. Only reason you catch on-stage audio so well is because of audio feed and speakers while audience audio is not picked up as well, so it translates to what sounds like a poor response when it's very much the opposite.
I've seen this event on another video filmed from a different angle, and further away from the stage. The crowd were definitely appreciative of this performance.
It's Scandinavia, that was a performance. You react not too much, not too little - just right. Lagom.
Norwegian crowds are ussualy very modest. Most crowds are quiet and just clap when a performance is over. I would say this is very respresentative of our current culture for the most part.
Why do Norwegian ships have barcodes on them?

I would love to see the tall ships in Norway! My father was a Merchant Marine and a relative shipped out of Stavangar way back in the late 1800's. His name was/is Olaf Hodne.
we'll be coming to Stavanger Norway in July this year! i'll be on the tall ship "morgenster"
In this time of Covid its worth mentioning that the world's first recorded clinical trials were done on board a ship in 1753 (ref. James Lind's 'Treatise upon the Scurvy').
wow! I didn't know!
But the old Norse viking population knew that plants (cabbage, angelica, and leek) could prevent the disease scurvy. These plants were cultivated in kitchen gardens. The theft of these plants was punished according to old Norwegian laws.
The old Norwegian name for scurvy, skyrbjugr, was first used in the saga about Thorstein the White in 1000
If anyone is interested, i believe the Shantyman in this is the same singer in Storm Weather Shanty Choir. Least sings the same songs and has the same sounding voice

are you related to the Norwegian family, or the german part from Wohlde in Braunschweig?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kristofer_Lehmkuhl
@@ErikSundheim I would assume I am related to the German part of the family. We don't know much about the geology on my father's side of the family, but we have always known the Lehmkuhles to be Germans. I knew the name was North German, I had no idea there were Norwegian Lehmkuhls. As I said, I don't know much about my father's side, what I do know is confusing. North Germans are by and prominent Protestants, but the Lehmkuhles I am directly descended from are Catholic, which led me to believe the name was south-German till I learned otherwise. It is sort of funny really, I have all of these Protestant ansestors in a branch of my family except my maternal grandmother's (Slovak) and I wound up a card-carrying Catholic.
But like I say, we don't know much about my dad's side of the family. Maybe I am Norwegian on that side, I doubt it, I don't know when my part of the family came over to the United States, but I don't think we would have just forgotten where we came from like that.

Heave away, my boys, for Mexico!

Anybody know the other language they're singing Santiana (Heave Away) in?
This shanty is sung mostly in Norwegian language, as the norwegian Storm Weather Shanty Choir did this performance at the Tall ships races in Stavanger in 2011 :)
Been looking. Even found a video with parts of the lyrics and tried to look from that but no way to find full lyrics for the song :/
"There is a Norwegian version of this song about a man who sails from Copenhagen to Kristiansand and meets a girl with whom he spends a night. He then has to travel to India and, when he arrives, he is handed a letter saying that his Norwegian friend is dead. He never returned to Norway for his Anna is dead. The song is remodeled by Storm Weather Shanty Choir."

Norway's maritime history is great, we still have one of the biggest fleets of ship globally.

Yes he is very professional indeed! And I definitely heard of how excellent Norway is in Marine Trade! But why is he singing a native British shanty? Why are the Norwegian sailors are singing a British shanty too? is there a common history between British sailors and Norwegians and so Norwegians have learned the shanties ?
Many Norwegians served on British ships over the years and shanties spread into Norwegian shipping culture that way.
Norwegians have been all around the world , it is what we did in the old days. Explore . So i dont see what is wierd about it ^^
Ismael Samham doesn't sound very Brittish, but you probably are. A lot of these are Irish Shanties too, but I grew up listenting to them sung by Canadians. :)
i respect your sailor traditions but norway must pay the jubilation to the galician which work since 1940 in norways ships, its a fucking silencious genocide, that sailors escapes from a dictature and work hard for norway, they deserves your respect
