The whole use of cameos and referencing better films as a way to press the audience nostalgia button is pretty lazy and it seems to be all Disney can do anymore. I would see it as both a cash grab and an act of desperation.

They brought back David Tennant to ruin his legacy in Doctor Who. They brought back Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford to ruin their legacy Star Wars. They brought back Harrison Ford to ruin his legacy in Indiana Jones.
What could possibly go wrong with RDJ returning to Iron Man?

    • @shaunsaunders531

I had David Tennant in mind and just scrolled down the comments to make sure I wasn't repeating anything.
Exactly that, any attempt to bring a great character back is just for a bit of character assassination; I'd rather they left him dead. Sitting him down for a lecture about pronouns, his misogynistic, playboy streak in the beginning and any accusations of toxic masculinity by some purple haired they/them would be totally ignoring the redemption arc that saving the universe at the expense of his life affords a character.
I can't even go back and watch "old" new Who now. I look at Tennant and all I see is a sellout. I don't want to see that with RDJ too.

Well for starters getting a set long term vision by establishing an overarching plot.
Have a clear picture in mind fr each and every new character that is introduced; u shld have a rough idea as to where u wanna take that character and whether that character features in this grand vision of theirs or not. If not, keep the character's story arc seperate from the rest of the continuity and self contained so that audiences can follow them separately.
Try not to appease certain groups and elements by lazily written dialogue pandering and overall storylines hellbent on proving a certain point.

I'm certain that Disney execs watch prominent CZcams critics and read the comments. They know what their audience thinks about their crappy products. It's incredible to see a business go against its own customers to the degree that they will pretend real criticism doesn't exist and even attack their own audience. Sadly, the reality is the extremely wealthy people at the top want diverse/gay/feminist/trans propaganda so that's what they'll keep producing. RDJs return would be like David Tennant's return in Doctor Who. It would just be a hook to get people in to watch some preachy garbage.

I think it’s ridiculous to think that the MCU can continue without utilizing its top tier characters like Iron Man or Steve Rodgers Captain America regardless of Endgame’s ending. These are comic book characters and no comic book character stays dead forever. What? Disney isn’t allowed to bring back a character that’s been in the pop culture landscape in some form another for the last 60 years? These are comic book characters and comic book stories. Stop taking this stuff so seriously. One of the major things killing the MCU right now besides bad writing and agenda driven story telling has been it’s move to less popular Z grade characters that lack charismatic stars like Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans. They killed Iron Man, killed T’Challa Black Panther, aged out Captain America, nerfed and destroyed classic Hulk, made Thor a punchline and foolishly thought crap like Captain Marvel and Shang Chi would suffice as suitable replacements. Going back to the well of classic marvel characters and storytelling is EXACTLY what the MCU needs. Again this ain’t Schindler’s List - Endgame was a comic book movie and a good one, but this reverence for that ending is just laughable to me. Enjoy this stuff for what it is.

Look, we all want the same thing; we want the MCU to be great again.
I thought at the time back in 2019 the MCU was likely to decline in quality because it had been unnaturally good and consistent for a decade. I mean, look at any long lasting series of films and they have ups and downs.
Their strategy was highly risky: we're gonna take our MCU, kill off two main beloved characters Tony & Natasha) and age off third (Cap) , increase the quality of production in films and TV and assume we can maintain quality and not hurt our brand. In the words of Iron Man - 'Not a great plan". They also had bad lick- the pandemic, the delay of getting out Gaurdians 3 that was supposed to start the new slate of films, and the death of Chadwick Boseman.
As its gone the movies have been a mixed bag of very good (Spidey3 & Gaurdains) to poor (Eternals ). Its the Disney Plus shows that have too often been unwatchable (Secret Invasion). But even here we also have gems like Moonknoght and Werewolf By Night.
Now that some MCU movies have tanked at the box-office Marvel seems to have gotten the message. They have slowed production- Echo was dropped in a way so people wouldn't make too much of it & Ironheart put on a shelf somewhere. They are reworking Daredevil til its something fans will like.
I think the real problem of the MCU 2021-2023 is even Feiige spread himself too thin and didn't closely supervise everything the way he used to. He let a bunch of his top creatives go (Joss Whedon, James Gunn & the Russo Brothers) and brought in folks who didn't quite know what they were doing. But this is fixable.
So, I would welcome back RDJ in a well-written Marvel movie. (I wouldn't get Joss Whedon to direct as he seems to have a Jeckyl & Hyde personality but I'd bring him back to write in a nan0-second). I agree we shouldn't cheapen straks death but imagine the following scenario: Evil Invincible Iron Man threatens to destroy our universe so another Tony Stark (played by Downey) from another universe is recruited to help save ours. .Only he LACKS CONFIDENCE! Hes insecure! Everyone is begging him to gain Iron Mans smarts and swagger gain.We see him grow in confidence as he watches the record of OUR Tony Stark (and maybe a pep talk from Pepper?) and he helps foil the Evil Iron Man in the end.
    I think that could work.

If disney brings back iron man, i guess first of all they are in a desperate situation and they need money... 2, like you said they want us to live again the glorious days of the mcu but by doing that it wont add anything to his character...
I have theories in mind that could be potentially interesting but i don't know if disney will get him back:
    1) Tony stark could have created another AI in secret with the technology to save his intellect, so the other marvel heroes discovers it and they could get some help from him for further threats
    2) tony could come from another earth and maybe have a plan ahead and one step ahead plan in case anything goes wrong, it could be another version of him that already planned something in secret that the heroes doesn't know about...
    3) tony could be brought back as an AI with the little guy from Iron man 3 which was at his funeral and grew older at the time, it could introduce iron lad as the next iron man and maybe have a role in armor wars along side rodhey who was replaced by a skrull in secret invasion so they could bring also knowledge for morgan his daughter
    4) tony could be an evil version of iron man and doesn't come from earth but instead from another dimension and could potentially have evil plans on taking over the avengers and bring along with him the superior persona
    5) tony could have been replaced been a skrull all along and doesn't know that his technology has been sold around the world and the real tony stark had a secret lab hidden and nowhere to be found whefe he could operate to destroy the company that stole his technology
    6) tony stark could have found the way to travel through time and meet a younger version of himself and warn him about the future, also he could have met the f4 on the way and discover the technology to travel through dimensions as well and prevent any threats that could come from out of space and time

If Disney cared about writing, I wouldn't mind an alternate universe Tony Stark played by Tom Cruise based in the 1980's. It be fun to give him a mullet too like in the old 80's animated series lol You could even have him time travel to the 1960's which is what the new fantastic 4 movie time line is going to be in. He be the one from the future in this case. It be more compelling to make his character super intense like tom cruise in real life , but to the point where it's funny to see him interact with other avengers because he comes off as a lunatic.

I think RDJ as Iron Man in battleworld with the original 6, the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spidey and Venom would be a good one off to finally end the MCU and then they can reboot and do whatever it is they want to do to finish slaughtering our once great franchise.

I heard a rumor about Chris Evans wanting to come back and play the human torch again for fun, though I think that’s a terrible idea. Apart of me thinks it might be cool, but the whole multiverse phase has basically killed all of the hype for the MCU. Bringing RDJ back as Iron-Man again is just plain wrong.

I don't want Robert Downey Jr. to return to the iron man role; it would literally invalidate everything that has come before. If Downey is willing to come back, it's just a money grab, which is sad. I don't want Disney's grubby, dirty, little hands, anywhere near these characters, or their arcs. They went out on top; let's leave it that way. I grew up with these books, and I don't feel that Disney is 'worthy' of telling their stories.

If it were up to me, I would reboot everything, bye bye to lame Skrulls, Kree and Nick Fury, to Antonia Taskmaster, to Annete Bening's Mar-Vell, to Tenoch Huerta's Namor, to Julia Garner's Silver Surfer, Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards, etc. And there would be a new Tony, Steve, T'Challa, Natasha in their rightful places

I love your points. I'm also thinking another Tony Stark from the multiverse? Anyways, what would bother me more is that Disney ruin RDJ's career. Disney has been putting so much crap I would simply do as Jenna Ortega and ignore Disney for my own professional good.

I hope he returns but has a say on the script, I dont want them to make him a sidekick, he is iron man. But if they do use him maybe he could be a villain from another universe would love to see a tony stark be a threat.

To be fair, Snarky, Marvel started ruining itself ahead of Infinity War and Endgame and Iron Man 3 for it's mishandling on the villains is a clear example of when this collapse of the MCU started. Trust me, we we're angry at the studios for turning thir backs on the Mandarin in the comics in favor of China and getting things out of the way while doing what the feel is best to match success of others like Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight movies.

They should give Captain Marvel another movie. Bring in really good writers. Have her go through a huge change. Allow her to grow as a character. Perhaps she should be pursued for her crimes of mass murder. Allow her character to be humbled and likable. She should experience loss and self-doubt
Then rise from her fall. And right at the height of her turnaround, kill her off.
Have Rogue drain her life-force out. It would be the greatest Captain Marvel movie of all. Her last actions redeems herself and inspire the new Avengers.

It will end up being a pastiche of itself. They need to rest for ten years and back some decent writers and directors who know what they're doing with a decent arc. They have such an amazing array of characters and it seems they don't know what to do with them anymore.

Ironman from 616 would make a awesome Villan to fight the new Avengers. Imagine seeing Ironman flying around looking for revenge for his friends lost due the Scarlett witch..Imagine the tech he built just to prepare for the multiverse threat on the other side.. This would be bone chilling bc it isnt the Ironman we know.. The Xmen & illuminati is searching for the Scarlett Witch anyways. So he would have his own team to back him up.

  • @fryke

I mean, yes, a 100% - but then again, Death is a revolving door in comics, and while I'd also fear for bringing his Tony Stark (or rather, an alternate version of him) back to the MCU destroying the legacy, we also have to think about what can be done to turn things around. Writing better stories is certainly desperately needed, but there's so much more missing from movies and series of this MCU "Dark Age" (I count WandaVision to the before-times here). Who are the heroes we should actually care about in the current phase? And what can they do to help us start to care about them? Where are the truly weak links and how do we get rid of them in a way that feels right, and replace them with worthy figures? Do heads need to roll at the top and new (or old) voices be brought (back) to the table(s)? With people losing interest in the whole enterprise, there certainly needs to be an acknowledgement of the problem first.
