  • Follow Khadak and my 7-day trek in Nar Phu Valley in Nepal, along with our favorite guide and friend, Dafuri Sherpa :)
    This off-the-beaten track trek takes you to the incredible and remote Nar Phu Valley! Just off of the Annapurna Circuit in the Manang District of Nepal, most travelers pass by the entrance in Koto unaware of its existence. Yet the hidden Nar Phu Valley encompasses some of Nepal’s most unique and striking landscapes, and leads you towards the Tibetan border to impressively remote, ancient villages, where the local people have endured the harsh winters and isolation for generations. Narrow trails carved into the steep cliff sides, dramatic yet safe and well-maintained, centuries old gompas and stupas, staggering mountain views, a challenging 5300 meter pass at Kang La. The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a spectacular 7- to 10-day adventure where the immensity and beauty of the natural world and the resilience of the local people will inspire you in a whole new way :)
    Our itinerary was as follows:
    0:00 Intro
    1:06 Day 0: Drive to Dharapani
    2:08 Day 1: Dharapani to Koto
    3:49 Day 2: Koto to Meta
    7:58 Day 3: Meta to Phu
    12:51 Day 4: Phu + down to Khyang
    16:53 Day 5: Khyang to Nar
    20:39 Day 6: Kang La Pass to Ngawal
    24:14 Day 7: Ngawal to Lower Pisang
    25:35 Drive back home
    26:20 Thank you :)
    Thanks for watching!
    And in case you're wondering about the permit process for the Nar Phu Trek:
    *Foreign trekkers (even if you're married to a Nepali!) need (1) Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), and (2) Nar Phu Restricted Area Permit
    *For (1) ACAP permit you just need to go to Nepal Tourism Board. You will need 2 passport sized photos and it costs NPR 3000
    *For (2) Nar Phu Restricted Area Permit it's a bit more complicated. A registered trekking agency will need to process the permit for you. You need to have a guide and there needs to be 2 FOREIGN trekkers (your Nepali spouse doesn't count as a trekker just FYI). The permit costs $100 per trekker, and you and fellow trekkers provide agency with the money and your passports and they'll get permit for you.
    **If you are trying to do this trek with just 1 foreign trekker, then you'll need to try to find another person/group planning to start trek around same time. You can try to find someone by going to the Immigration Office where they process the restricted area permits - the officers there will usually tell you if another guide or trekking agency has come in to try to get a permit. Sometimes they can hook you up. BUT if you just aren't lucky enough to find one (like us), then you'll have to get a "ghost trekker". You'll have to find a friend who is willing to let you borrow their passport for the day, and you'll have to pay an additional $100. Give all this to the agency, and they'll get your permits.
    *On the trail there are several check posts where they do actually check permits. If you have a "ghost trekker" permit they don't care at all, and I don't even think our guide Dafuri had to pretend that I had a friend that "just got sick and couldn't come".
    I think that's it! Let me know if you have any other questions :)

      Thank you so much for watching and for your comment :) And yes, the weather was definitely really nice the whole way, albeit a bit chilly. That is the good thing about trekking in the himalayas in November - you are pretty much guaranteed clear skies, you just have to endure a bit colder temperatures and often not as much greenery or agriculture to see at the high altitudes in this season. Beautiful though. Beautiful and different in every season!

    Hi. This is a really great video. It gives me a good idea what the trek is like, and it is delightful. Quick question. It looks like your companion on the trip was exhausted at the end of each day. Was it a difficult trek? What days were the hardest? Any reason why?

    • @StephThorntonNEPAL
      @StephThorntonNEPAL  Před 11 měsíci

      Hi David! Thank you so much for watching and so glad the video could give you a good idea about the trek. Haha, that's funny that you were able to notice - my husband was indeed especially exhausted the first few days, as he had just quit smoking at the start of the trek! Otherwise, I think this trek was fairly similar to other Nepali treks, difficulty-wise. There were some longer days (Koto to Meta, Meta to Phu), and the Kang La pass is pretty long with a steep climb at the end, but apart from that, if you are decently fit and accustomed to trekking at altitude, I found this trek to be the perfect level of challenging. I hope that helps and please let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hi Stephanie! Thank you for the detailed overview of the trek. I am planning to go through the same trek in mid April 2023. I am wondering what should I pack in terms of sleeping system. I am wondering if i would need to carry sleeping mat and sleeping bag if i plan to stay at the teahouses?
    Also how is the electricity in the area? Is it easy enough to charge electronics?
    Thank you in advance! ❤❤

      Oh and one more question regarding the cell phone coverage, how is it there 😅 thanks!!

    • @StephThorntonNEPAL
      @StephThorntonNEPAL  Před rokem

      Hello Oei Angela! Thanks so much for your message, and that's awesome that you are planning to do the Nar Phu Trek. Very good choice :) For sleeping, you actually don't need to bring anything extra as all the tea houses have beds and blankets for guests. I usually bring a sleeping bag with me on treks, and I did for this one as well, because I like to make sure I'll be extra warm and comfy. Definitely not necessary though.
      As for electricity, despite being so remote, most of the villages on this trek do have electricity, although with varying levels of reliability and power. Khyang and Phu only rely on small solar systems I believe, so less reliable there, but you should still be able to charge your electronics every stop along the way, unless maybe you had a device that required higher than average voltage to charge. I brought a power bank with me just so I could be sure I'd be able to charge, and used it to charge things the whole way.
      I am fairly sure there was cell phone coverage most of the way, although maybe not in Phu. I think Nar even had wifi though. I try to just have my phone in airplane mode the whole time, so I don't quite remember how good it was throughout.
      Hope that helps and please let me know if you have any other questions! I'm sure you already know, but the Nar Phu Trek does require an additional restricted area permit, and a funny rule that you need to have at least two trekkers in your group. If you need any assistance with permits, etc, I can help out with that too.

      @@surajnegi6862 It is true that some of the regions of Nepal are more expensive to get to than others because of the restricted area permits for foreigners. Nar Phu wasn't near as expensive as Mustang though, and there are also plenty of other places in Nepal that do not require these additional permits.
