    Great video! Some people don't understand that the reason that Eddie influenced so many guitarists is that he was so original and outside of the box. It was the notes and chords that he chose and the order and spacing he put in between them. I think a lot of modern shredders don't understand that sometimes the most important notes are the ones you don't play.✌️

    Great lessons Rob. Most tutorials do not mention following the root note train of thought pattern like you often do. I see that you like many of us find Eddie inescapable to use for wisdom. I have been in a Van Halen learning phase since Oct.6 2020 and still totally digging it. You rock man.

    Very cool tips, Robert! Also notice that the second (and third chord shapes) of the first riff are just the "C cowboy chord" slid up one (and two) steps, with the low root dropped off. Concentrating on just the D, G, and B strings make it seem 'new'. 😉 And the sus4 is SUCH a cool way to add a little color. 80's hair metal bands used it a LOT!

    Cool little mini-lesson, and so true. Edward was absolutely amazing, and innovative. No one ever sounded anything like him when he broke loose.... and no one ever has since then. Tens of thousands of great players out there. But to write the music, and put down what that guy did? Wow. It's utterly astounding if you think about it. And these are some of his favorite chord shapes!

    Great video robert , ive played for years on years but never was one of those guys who would think of every root note or where i was at every moment, i played mainly by ear so at 50 decided before i die i wanted to learn some theory and in this early stage of that plan the idea of moving that inverted D down to each chord and knowing the root note to signify chord was awesome for me thanks bro great job

    I've been watching your Van Halen videos non stop lately. You know, what's funny is that when I was a kid and had no clue how to really play guitar, I learned a lot of stuff like tapping and stuff on my own. It was almost the only way I was able even to play the thing at all, but I ended up giving it up back then because I thought to myself that I wasn't really playing guitar. I picked it up years later and play now, but at the time, I was like 10 or 11 at the time and I always thought if I went up on stage and started doing that stuff, everyone in the audience would know what I was doing and boo me off stage. I'm learning all the evh I can right now. One day. I think I created a technique yesterday. Idk if anyone else has done it. Definitely haven't seen it myself before. I would tell you, but I don't want your next video to be you getting a billion views using my new moves. But fr, I appreciate your videos very much! Really does help speed some things up. Keep up the awesome work!

  • @jeffro.
    @jeffro. Před rokem

    Robert, isn't that the basis for the whole CAGED system?;
    I figured out (back when I was playing in the 80s) that I could move those chords around the neck, and play chords anywhere. I had never heard of CAGED until I started back playing a couple years ago. Of course, since it works with Major chords, it also works with minor, 7th, 9th chords, etc.
    Now I know how to put them together, and to go right to them w/o having to count up from the nut to figure out which chord it is, since I actually learned CAGED.
    But thanks for that!
