    It's worth mentioning that Tucker had to adjust his run up to make the 66 yard kick. The only way a kicker could have a better run up would be a fair catch kick. Let's say a ball is fair caught at the receiving team's 35 yard line. Now they are set up for a 75 yard kickoff style kick where the kicker can take a full kickoff run-up. If the record ever goes over 70, I guarantee it will be a fair catch kick

    What about the angle? If the distance is longer, doesn’t the angle of initial trajectory make the kicked ball more easily blocked?

    • @NinjaPaperMario
      @NinjaPaperMario Před rokem +5

      Just like HRs, kicks have a preferred launch angle. I think once you go past 60 yards, the angle won't change much. But because of the bonsai approach compared to a 40 yarder, yeah it's more likely to be blocked.

      45 degrees gets you the longest possible range in a vacuum. Going shallower than that lands shorter, but goes lower.
      In air it's different. Into the wind, shallower winds up going further, but with the wind, the opposite is true.

    If one day the Ravens come to Mexico City and Justin Tucker is still their kicker, he could easily make a 70yd FG, in 2019 the Chiefs kicker was nailing 60-65 yd FGs in practice. Because realistically speaking Mexico City is the highest altitude the NFL would go and play. Awesome video as always FPV

    Also have to take into consideration: when kicking during a game, the snap and spot have to be perfect as well, and the defense has its hands up trying to block you. If you're kicking from _that_ distance, the trajectory might have to be lower so that the ball can travel farther, which increases the likelihood of your kick being blocked.

    Homeboy on the Colts hit one the other night that would have been good from 66yds...tying the record. And it looked wayyy too easy. 66yds will fall, maybe even this season, though it'll likely be Tucker doing it and if not him then DEFINITELY at Denver.
    There's a lot of factors involved in the in-game scenarios but since it's physically possible to boot them over 70, over 70 will eventually be the record.

      Even if the kick would be good from 66+ yards, you have to remember that the amount of pressure from attempting such a long field goal in a such a critical spot in a game would be monumental in comparison to a run of the mill 40ish yarder mid game. (one assumes this long a fg would be a last ditch effort to win the game with a fg in the closing seconds)

      Time is of course a factor. In practice or pre-game, you can back up further and take more steps to run into the attempt, since no one is trying to block you. In a game, it is standard to get snap, hold and kick all within 1.3 seconds. An extra step or two to get some more power means a higher risk of having it blocked.

      This is the weirdest rule in football (aside from a 1 point safety, maybe) and the fact that it’s only been tried a few times in the modern game with kickers like Tucker and Prater in the game is crazy to think about. The running start on those has to factor in massively.

  • @MaxWilliams247

    I do think 66 yards is very beatable in one case: a fair catch kick.
    I’ve always wanted to see one made. With no OL/DL to kick over, and a running start, I do think 75-80 could very well happen in a game. And it’d only ever happen in a situation (end of half/end of game) where there’s not much downside to trying it.

      True. My sophomore year, we played a team in the semifinals who went for a 63 yarder. Matt Szymanski of A&M Consolidated put it up and, because of how low it was, we were all thinking: “There’s no way this is going far enough.” Sure enough, with some wind to his back, that ball just kept going, went through, and was probably good for 70. Mind blowing moment.

      @@toastking1649 what the hell are you talking about?
      Okay I looked it up. What you are suggesting would be on the list of most unlikely things to ever happen.
      So the fair catch field goal, or free kick, is an old nfl rule, where after taking a fair catch, the team has the option to either run a play, or they have the option to attempt a field goal from the spot of the fair catch.
      This has happened 26 times in the history of the nfl history and it has worked 6 times.
      I don’t think it is really worth talking about.

    • @victorymanick9
      @victorymanick9 Před rokem +3

      @@davidnotonstinnett It's definitely still a possibility, lets say a team goes to punt down 2 from their own 20, that would mean the punter would be set up right around the 8 or so, he gets a kick off that the returner is able to fair catch at their own 40, then with about 20 or so seconds left in the game they decide to try it. I mean yes very unlikely but definitely still a possibility and would still count as the longest field goal in NFL history if it was made.

    A live kick with a rush, a bunch of 6'6" guys trying to block it, a snap that has to be handled and placed cleanly, wearing game equipment, and in a real stadium with a real crowd, I'd be able to believe a 70 yarder. It is true top kickers can nail 70 yarders in practice not exactly "reliably", they usually miss, but they can certainly do it with some degree of regularity. So 70 is doable. Much longer than that is straining credulity. It would be cool to try to perfect conditions to even get a 90 yard through the uprights. Utterly unrealistic in a game though.

    On a fair catch, you can do a runup field goal, so 80 yards is possible

    One more wild card possibility is fair catch kick.

    You might want watch some CZcams clips of Australia Rules Football. Kicking goals (6 points) from distances of up to 85-90 metres (roughly 90+ yards or up to 300 feet) are not that uncommon.

    I've never heard of this deestroying guy, but it's cool to know that he's got quite a long kick. Perhaps he could have made it in the NFL and actually made a lot more money doing that than doing CZcams videos but I'm sure he's having a lot more fun on CZcams and not feeling a bunch of pressure from coaching and fans and a team depending on him although let's be honest I'm pretty sure having a successful CZcams channel puts a lot of pressure on you anyways.

    With the best kicker, wind, and at mile high I would say 73 yards. People have hit longer in practice but its practice for a reason.

    Longest field goal humanly possible is 109 yards, easily achieved by anybody with a copy of Madden, the right sliders, and a few minutes to waste.

    Yeah the risk of going for it on a 65+ is you turn it over in your own half.

    Butker, Tucker, Justin Reid (yes you read that right), and a few others might be able to crack 70.

    I know of a certain NY team that could use a powerful kicker that could kick that far, only because their offense can't get the job done.
