I feel you on that intro. I’m also a vet, combat engineer. Served from 2001-2021. It does hit you in the feels. This has become my favorite game though, I’ve probably done close to 20 complete playthroughs since it released. That being said, I don’t know why, the Mass Effect trilogy has become my go to game. It’s been good for me and I hope it will be for you too.

I’ll be honest, I normally watch your RDR2 play through exclusively, but for some reason I decided to watch this.
First let me say thank you for your service. I never served and I regret it for many reasons. I have the upmost respect for all service men and women. Saying thank you will never be enough to show my gratitude.
Next I want to say that I’m glad you show your humanity with your videos. These may just be video games we play, but they can conjure real emotions as we relate these fictional worlds and characters with real world experiences.
You are a badass and I commend you for having the strength to show empathy for the people you love. Society may look at crying as weakness, but we know better. It’s easier to put on a mask to hide how we feel, but it takes true strength to show how you really feel. I’m sure I’m one of many that wish we could sit with you and hear your full story and give you a hug when you are saddened by it. Much love. Much respect.

If you did the mission for Admiral Kohaku in ME1, you found Kohaku dead in a Cerberus facility, killed by Cerberus test subjects. Also, if you had questioned Miranda a little about Wilson instead of agreeing he was crooked right off the bat, she says a very amusing voice line. Jacob asks Miranda if she thinks Wilson was really capable of betraying them and Miranda says very deadpan, "Not anymore."

  • @treemu

For future reference: the left side of the dialogue wheel is for additional information and usually does not advance the conversation. It is highly advised you exhaust all options on the left side before continuing by choosing on the right side. You missed a few with Illusive Man and could have found out more about what happened to your previous crew but it's definitely not a big loss. Just means it will be more of a surprise as you progress in the story :)

I started watching her around part three of her playthrough and I've come back to watch the earlier ones. I'm honestly worried of watching her go through the Omega 4 relay, because as of part 8, her tendency to ignore the left side has so far put her two crew members down before she even gets control back after the initial cutscene.

I like to micromanage my squad leveling, especially with ME2 and ME3. With ME2, there are warp detonations. You have to prime and detonate those, so having points in the right squad member skills to make the most of those is beneficial since they offer damage multipliers. This is even more true with a larger number of cross-class combos in ME3.

Don't know if this will help or not, but I'm a Desert Storm vet (Air Force medical corps), and I had much the same reaction to the opening as you had. Whether they intended it or not, the writers for ME2 and ME3 did a very good job of portraying the sense of duty and camaraderie, the "no man left behind" sentiment of the military, as well as the effects that those things can have amongst soldiers during a war. It's all very well done and anyone can feel it, but only veterans can know how close to the real thing the writers and actors truly got.

  • @unnamedofficial5796
    @unnamedofficial5796 Před 9 měsíci +1

    Off to a terrific start!
It's always interesting to see what resonates most with different individuals. The opening of ME2 always hits hard -- losing the Normandy *and* Shepard in the first ten minutes! But I think you're the first I've seen to really focus on the scene itself, the chaos and noise and sheer disorientation of an emergency evacuation under fire. I play this game once or twice a year (yeah, it's that good), and I'll see that opening through new eyes from now on; thanks for sharing the experience!
About the Dark Horse comic recap: if you're importing a Mass Effect 1 character, it will include all the decisions from your save file, but it can also be used to start a "fresh" ME2 playthrough without playing ME1 at all -- the comic will let you *make* the major choices the way you'd like. It's a nice feature -- and it's only slightly annoying that it was originally paid DLC.
A couple of quick, non-spoilery, hopefully non-back-seat-y notes on game mechanics (things that are in the tutorial, but may not be clear) -- you'll probably have figured all of this out by the time you read this comment... but just in case:
"Sprint," "Enter Cover," "Leave Cover," and "Vault Over Cover into A Hail of Bullets" are all on the *same key*, affectionately known as the "Do the Thing" button or the "Shepard! No! You dummy! OMG! And... now we're dead!" button. What the button does is entirely context dependent. Or it's a random mishap generator. You be the judge!
"Sprinting Into Cover" is a thing -- if you sprint straight into a wall or other cover-providing-object, you'll automatically enter cover without an additional press of the "Do the Thing" button. This is mostly very handy. But it also means that "Sprinting Past Cover" isn't a thing... if you sprint too close to a wall or what have you, you'll stick to it like Velcro, often in plain view of whatever you were sprinting away from. Hijinks ensue! (The judges may award extra points if, in the process of detaching yourself from the obstruction, you accidentally vault over it, landing in an even worse situation!)
The procedure for activating a companion's power is (1) bring up power menu (which pauses the action); (2) aim reticule at target; (3) click a power to select it; (4) release the power menu (which allows action to resume). If you change your mind during step (3), you can click the power again and chose a different one (or nothing). The click-on, click-off behavior is mostly fine... except that players will sometimes try to double-click powers, which has the effect of Mysteriously Doing Nothing. Hijinks fail to ensue.
Looking forward to a fun and unique playthrough!

One of the best openings to a game I've ever played, I always come back to this. It takes the one thing that made you feel strong and safe in the first game and tore it to pieces in a way that shows just how much more dangerous the enemy is in this game. The intro to this game is one that has always stuck with me. Despite it being a sci-fi game, it manages to be such a realistic and potent example of both heroism and unexpected tragedy. I don't have the personal connection to that theme that you do, but even without it I remember a shiver running down my spine from the pure shock and emotion of watching the ship get destroyed, and when the music kicks in as Shepherd struggles to breath as she falls into the planet's atmosphere I definitely felt super emotional.
I think it was the biggest emotional impact a game had ever had on me until I played The Last of Us. I knew just from the into that ME2 was going to go down as an all time favorite game for me, and it's still in my top 5. Looking forward to seeing you experience it all.

The music in the comic recap….it kills me every time. There’s so much nostalgia wrapped up in that music for me. I played Mass Effect when it first released and it quickly became my favorite game of all time. The story was awesome, and while the gameplay wasn’t perfect, it was still a really fun game to play. So anytime I hear that music, I’m instantly back to when I first played, a time when my parents were still alive and I wasn’t a useless, disabled cripple weighing my wife down by being in so much daily pain that I can’t do anything.
Sorry….I didn’t mean for that to get that….dark. Nostalgia just kills me, I love it and hate it at the same time. The original Mass Effect was exclusive to the XBox. When ME2 came out, it supported the PlayStation and PC play, so the interactive comic was there to allow PS and PC players with no ME1 character to import to make the decisions from ME1. Well, some of them, anyway. If you did not import a character, it would pause and let you make the choices as you read it. With an imported character, it just tells the story using your imported choices.

I just got done watching your ME1 stream series and wanted to give you context (in case you never find it by playing)!
In ME1, Cerberus was involved with a ton of different experiments and side quests in off shoot worlds. Rear Admiral Kahoku (the first alliance guy in the citadel who gives you a side quest right after becoming a Spectre) has a questline that leads you down a narrative wormhole that points to Cerberus. I'm pretty sure that off-shoot world you visited where other scientists were experimenting on Thorian Creepers was a Cerberus base.
Long and short, they were heavily involved in a lot of SHADY scientific projects all throughout the 1st game, so when you start the 2nd one, you're very much supposed to wonder if you're a big pawn, but you already are picking up on that. So anyway! Shady, freaky, sciency, untrustworthy. You get it haha

I like that you play aggressive. Lots of people walk through the fights at the start until they figure out it's best to rush to cover.
Also, use the ammo power. It burns the enemy and does extra damage to armour. Anything with armour tends to be pretty strong, so getting through it faster is always good.

Hope you enjoy and have fun, this series has amazing stories, and it further goes into the mental aspect of things as well. Addedum: Your missing a fair amount of dialouge, the options on the left if they are not colored red/blue are further questions and interactions. I'd recommend checking those out before ever selecting options on the right, as it typically advances the story.

The Genesis Interactive Comic will allow you to make all the major decisions of ME1 and dive right into ME2, by the way. With such a broadly branching game, it's a neat tool to use if you are interested in seeing some of the changes that would happen in ME2 with different decisions from ME1.

I LOVE YOU! :D I do not know who you are and I found this video by accident. ME2 was my first game in this series way back and it is my favorite episode of the trilogy. I cannot wait to see what are your choices and how do you react to people and stuff. Thank you for playing and sharing all fo this with us! I am thinking to replay the whole series and I will do that some day. Mass Effect is part of my soul. For me this is more than just a game. If somebody I meet will say that they like or love Mass Effect, then they will get all my attention and will be my favorite person from all the people there might be. :D

Thank you for sharing such a personal and emotional reaction to the intro. Without giving away any spoilers, prepare yourself for the ending, it's even more traumatizing than the intro. As is the dlc Project Overlord. Emotionally gut wrenching.
Tip: I'm guessing after 5 days now you've figured this out, but as a vanguard biotic charge is your best friend! It restores your barrier/shields (50% initially, upgradable to 100%) and it's definitely your most powerful biotic power, and your best lifesaver. Pair it with a shotgun and your incendiary ammo (which stays active permanently once activated per each mission) and you will obliterate enemies. For ME3, vanguard also gives you a really good melee biotic power that makes the perfect 1-2 punch with biotic charge and brings melee combat in as a more viable option. Melee is available in ME2, but definitely weaker. Look for build recommendations on CZcams if you're interested in learning more, there are tons of them available and they do a good job explaining the different powers and abilities for each class.
Lastly, good luck and enjoy the game! It's quite possibly one of the best games ever made, especially the story.

Your reaction to the opening was powerful. I think it speaks to how good this game is that it can evoke that reaction from someone with lived experience, where a lesser game might have you going "pfft, thats not what its like." Still, I hope you're taking care of yourself emotionally while playing through these; that kind of resonance can be cathartic but it can also be damaging if you're not prepared.
(Takes off therapist hat, puts on sapphic gamer hat.) Alas! Miranda is straight. Just like all the other female characters in this game that were clearly designed specifically by sadists to be attractive to me personally. (Jack. Kasumi. Tali. Stop making lesbian-nip characters and then making them straight, Bioware devs 15 years ago!)
ETA: Also, yeah, ME2 is WAY harder than 1, or at least that was my experience. I died a LOT early on before I found a couple of severely OP guns.

I’m a new subscriber and love your content.
First of all, thank you for serving which raises my respect above and beyond. Blessing to you and your family.
No flippancy, but as much as upsetting as the ME2 intro was to you, BioWare’s writers and storytellers raised that bar in ME3, so please be prepared.
Looking forward to binging on the rest of your content. If/when you can (or are interested in), since you love Mass Effect, you might consider the Dragon Age series.
If memory serves that you said you were still active duty, please be safe in your duties and again, hope to see more new content as well as your previous videos.

Losing the Normandy is traumatic enough for us keyboard warriors, let alone anyone who's had to deal with that kind of situation in real life. Mad respect. I'm glad by the end of it you were as excited for the new Normandy as I was first time I saw it.
What always hit me was that moment at 11:20 when, just before being spaced, the last thing Shepard does is hit the launch button to safely eject Joker's escape pod.

Just picked up your playthrough, I wanted to see your reaction to ME2's beginning before heading back to the first entry in the series. Your reaction was such a wonderful tribute to all the amazing people who put this game together - and to all those who worked on the remaster, and silly jokers like me too, who feel in love with it years ago.

Mass Effect 2 is definitely the Empire Strikes Back of the series. Darker, grittier, better produced, and better than both the titles that came before it and after.
Although at the time it was really irritating to lose all the RPG mechanics from the first game, and have the gameplay turned into Gears of War... in SPAAAAAACE! Wish they'd remake the trilogy and give 2 and 3 the love they deserve.
