This was one of their earliest songs, recorded early in 2012 - and yes they still play it and yes it is still an absolute bangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!🤘
'Headbanger' is about a girl going to her first concert on her 15th birthday, but it is also a coming of age thing (compulsory education ends at 15 in Japan). The girl is realising life will never be the same, her first 15 years passed by so quickly, so she is etching this special night of her 15th into her heart so she will never forget.
It is not biographical (Su was 14 when it was recorded) but they could relate - they were already playing metal concerts, not just attending their first one.
The neck brace pays homage to X Japan's founder, drummer, pianist and main composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly while headbanging that he needed surgery. BABYMETAL have used the neck brace a lot in live concerts including having some where everybody in the audience had to wear one (including when they played Tokyo Dome and they gave out 55k neck braces with remote controlled LED bulbs ... and another 55k the next night).
At shows in 2014 on or near their own 15th birthdays Yuimetal (in Paris) and Moametal (in Cologne) took over lead vocals for 'Headbanger' when Su-metal handed them the mic and stand half way through the song for them to finish it off ... and Su-metal seamlessly stepped into their place with the choreo. There are only fancam videos for those.
The same thing happened at the Legend M concert in 2019 on Moametal's 20th birthday - 20 is the official coming of age to be an adult in Japan.
A great live version - so many to choose from, but live at Legend 1997 (Su-metal's 16th birthday party in December 2013) is always a great choice. Look for that posted by abr metal or Gans Tomas for the best quality (and safe to use) videos.

Hell yeah! But remember, Babymetal is meant to be experienced live, so you missed 50% of the awesomeness. Don’t get me wrong, the MV was great as well.
Be sure to watch their live next! Babymetal just released the live of Metali ft. Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, though he’s not there in person.
