It’s interesting to think about, when talking about Guts and Griffith as leaders, that guts actually cares about the men he is leading. In the bonfire of broken dreams scene, he is able to tell Casca about the specific dreams his men have and he rushes in when Zodd is killing his men. Do you think that guts is a more empathetic character than he lets on? In the Golden Age arc, Guts always seems to be the one listening to others tell their dreams and some part of it is a story thing where they have to explain their dream to the main character so readers can understand their motivations but it also speaks to Guts’ character that so many people share their dream with him.
Yes! I 100% I have always felt that Guts is an empathetic character… even in the first books when he doesn’t want Puco around, I knew when he didn’t kill him it was because he didn’t want Puck to get hurt or suffer from following him… Guts tries to act like he doesn’t care but I genuinely think he is the most empathetic character in the manga… Dad and I will have to do an episode on this!!! 💗

Love this channel so much. My dad is likely very close in age to your dad, and I try desperately to get him to watch anime/read manga with me. He has been stubborn about it so far!
Really! That’s so interesting! Tbh my dad also refused to watch it with me for years! But I just kept trying and eventually I showed him AoT and he fell in love! Maybe ask your dad to watch Vinland Saga, a lot of people have told me that they were able to introduce a parent to anime through that! My best advice is just find an anime that you think would rope your dad in and ask him to give it a real shot! I asked my dad to just watch 3 episodes and if he still hated it by then he didn’t have to watch anymore and it worked! He loved it and wanted to keep watching! If you give it a shot, Let us know how it goes!
Griffiths relationship with Guts comes from a much more emotional place than just Guts' utility. Griffith becomes a lot more irrational when he's dealing with Guts. You see throughout the whole arc how cold and calculated Griffith is with EVERYTHING but not when it comes to Guts. When looking at Griffith it might seem that he hasn't loved anything or anyone in a typical way. But Guts probably made him feel something that he has never been confronted with and that's probably love, platonic or romantic It doesn't really matter the point is, that he FEELS something with Guts. With these new very unknown feelings Griffith defaults to what he knows best. Possession and control. This all seems to stick out more when Miura in an interview printed the official guidebook where he stated that two mangas that he took inspiration from during this arc were "The Rose of Versailles" and "Kaze to Ki no Uta" the latter being a male-male romance manga. I love the vids guys. Can't wait to see how this goes :D

Yes I definitely agree that Griffith is lashing out by seeing Charlotte and not doing it to “further his agenda” but sabotage it… I think that when Griffith “slept” with the Old Perv he was self sabotaging too, just to prove that he was also willing to sacrifice just like that little boy in his merc group had… Griffith seems to always methodically plan things out but when he feels any emotion or guilt he seems to punish himself for it, which is what I think he’s doing here with Guts… I lost Guts so now I must suffer… in a way, he almost tries to redeem himself from “sin” or what he believes is “wrong” by creating his own punishment for actions or emotions he deems as a hindrance from his overall goal.. dad and I definitely need to talk more about this in an episode !!

Maybe his top three favorite illustrations i feel like he would gravitate twords the sweeping horizons and battles but im curious to see how his thoughts on some of the smaller more personal scenes as well.

Regarding Guts not caring for himself. I actually believe that Guts doesn’t know how to care for himself based on his life thus far. No one has cared for him long enough to have made an impact.
I think of Guts as a leader of men, but my perception may be tainted because i read the full story. So i've seen him sit down and talk to his group, i've seen him teach and advise. but seeing both of your perspectives on it makes me realize that he always was a natural leader, he just hadn't grown into enough of a "person" to actually do it when it mattered the most, back in the golden age.
Yes! I feel like Guts is “his biggest hater” because he never really believed in himself during the Golden Age, he saw himself as “bad luck” and never really thought anyone depended on him… I think he was a born leader but just couldn’t see himself as one because of his past… I think once he left the band of the Hawk and came back and had to step up to the plate he realized he was useful and helpful and was more than just a man who wanted to “stay alive”
The conversations stay riveting, I hope this channel has consistent growth because the editing is great and the conversations are even better!
