  • This is a frequently requested vlog from students, but the answers Tara provides to this question of supervisor feedback may create some disquiet. Tara answers this student question with ten answers from supervisors / advisers. In creating an awareness of why supervisors do not provide feedback, students can learn to frame their expectations, deliver clear outputs, and create the best time for their submitted writing to enable commentary, drafting and editing. How do we create the conditions for an intellectual dialogue between student and supervisor? There are some strategies that work.

There is some very helpful advice here, but I wonder why all of the responsibility is put on the student and virtually none on the supervisor. What if the student produces excellent work, on deadline and still does not receive feedback from the supervisor? What about supervisors who are not fulfilling their responsibilities?

Don't treat your supervision like it's a dry cleaning service... had to be the best (& most hilarious tip yet)🤣

Thank you for these vlogs! I'm starting my first day as a Mechanical Engineering PhD on Monday and have been watching your videos for the past few weeks while trying to prepare for this journey. This is invaluable advice, I will put it to good use!

I think you were NOT too hard or harsh - your comments are very helpful. You need not worry ever about having been too honest, Dr. Brabazon. Thank you!

Tara, You are a Star! I Love your Vlogs. I may not be doing a PHD but they are interesting to watch. I admire anyone who takes on a PHD. Going to have a look at Google Scholar to see what a PHD looks like. I couldn't cope with a Degree but discovered Openlearn which is content based but no assignments which is better for me after my Nervous Breakdown.

Professor Brabazon, your videos are life-saving. Students also have to take the work seriously as much as the supervisors. Thank you.

Thank you for this video. I love the idea of writing a 1000 words a week. In my university it is often advised that one should not write during the first year and I find that quite a worrying idea.

Thank you Professor Brabazon for your ongoing vlogs. I'm commencing a prof doc this semester and have found your series of vlogs super helpful. I'm certainly taking in a lot of what not to do; always good to learn from others missteps!

All fair points Tara, and a great way to show us how we can take ownership of the situation. I'm wondering if you have any advice for those of us that are yet to receive any feedback at all?

Thank you, what do you think about sending emails to supervisor at August Holiday?

Dear Tara, for me it’s a bit difficult sometimes to follow your vlogs, since systems in doing a PhD are different in other countries and disciplines, but these topics that are generally given are extremely helpful for me.
But to be really honest, all you’ve said is clear to me and I think is common sense. My supervisor told me that people are showing the behavior you pointed out, but I simply can’t understand. She is telling me it’s rare having people not doing these mistakes.
As I watched your “how to fail a PhD in 60 seconds” I thought the same.
How come people are not skilled by looking at the perspective of others and acting upon on that? For me it’s just not understandable.

Yeah, if I were doing any of these things, I wouldn't ask the question. What a bizarre miracle it would be to get iterative feedback on anything, much less have the chance to write 1000 words on an interesting topic and get conceptual feedback. That's like a fantasy world, frankly.
More pressing for me is getting feedback on polished drafts of chapters, you know, ever, rather than expecting it soon or ever thinking about what might happen if I got more feedback on that same work.

Yeah but your one of the scary good supervisors, why did your masters or PhD supervisor not supervise you?
