Join me as we perform a walk-away split on a colony. In this video I show you how it is performed and everything you need to know to be successful! #honeybees #bees #honey #beekeeping #splits
Some of the folks around here usually let them fill a super before putting their comb honey on so that they know they are in the major part of the flow and to also reduce any travel stains that could come up from the brood chamber. Having them directly over the brood chamber can lead to them possibly storing pollen in your comb honey. We are going to try ross rounds and cut comb this year as well, so we are just learning but we are lucky enough to have a lot of great beekeepers in our club to ask their advice. Thanks for sharing! I am excited to see your results. That queen with the white dot would be on her third winter! That's impressive.
Great tips Brian! I’m learning as well so we will see what happens. Last year I gave a super of drawn comb below the comb honey super and they only filled the regular frames because it was already drawn. I guess maybe the trick is letting them fill the super first and then add the comb honey later. Maybe I’ll do that next year. Fingers crossed!!
I have a queen just like yours, I just love her! Due to wanting to swarm (huge hive, double deep) I ended up splitting them into one hive and two nucs, hopefully I will have three new queens from my absolute favorite queen!
@@beesintheweeds Will do! That will be after 5-9 :) It will be interesting, honestly, I've seen videos of more experienced beekeepers saying, "bees can raise a queen with a handful of bees" one of those splits was literally one frame plus one frame of resources. Fingers crossed!
Great video of how to do a split with a great queen! I would do the same! Don’t worry about those trolls. They can do bees their way. I enjoy learning from your videos and plan to do a lot of the same things you are.
Josh, since you have multiple frames with eggs they will make cells on multiple frames. The day before they hatch take one of the extra frames with a cell and still another good frame of sealed brood from another hive and make a small split. You will get several new hives from this queen. I do this often….like that resource hive you got!
Angela, check the description of some of my previous videos. I’ve linked it several times. Let me know if you still can’t find it and I’ll send again. Cheers!
Your smoker is acting strange. It appears the smoke is really only coming out of the bottom and not the top. Is the stand off disc not in the bottom or something?
Keen eye! Yes, the disk is out. It’s also a fire starter my dad and I make I’ve been playing with but obviously haven’t perfected yet. It has some work to still do, haha. Stay tuned!

Good job Josh. Nice looking Apiary.
Another great video! Thanks!

That is awesome! And sounds like an excellent plan! Keep us posted how it works out!

Yes, that is definitely an option. Lots of ways to make splits, this is just how I tend to do it. Good tip!
@@beesintheweeds and my kids love your bee boxes! “Mama, his are prettier than yours”!
@@amfarmsllc5624Hahahaha! 😊
😅 love your comments on trolls 🧌
They’re the worst. 🙄
Can you send me the link for the rapid feeder, I can not find it on Amazon, thank you. Bee's looking good 👍

If you give them partially drawn comb in the cassettes form last year, is that part of the comb honey going to be too hard to chew on ?
It shouldn’t be. To my knowledge freezing the wax does not change hardness. I’ll be sure to let y’all know.
Thank you for the reply

Way too much smoke, pal; it can make the bees ball their queen if they can't smell anything.
Agree to disagree.
