Dean want Sam to be happy, he believes Sam deserve to be happy with a normal life but doesn't think that about himself because he doesn't think he's good enough for it. The main issue with the first half of this season was Dean was worried it be a repeat of Stanford where Sam cut Dean out of his life completely, and to be fair Sam never stated he wanted or would still be in touch with Dean if he chose to be a hunter while he retired, add that with the fact that Sam didn't look for Dean and Dean starts feeling like Sam doesn't care about him. Now that that's over with Dean is back to putting Sam above everything else, for better or worse

It's not so much as Belief in Sam as much as Concern for Sam. These trials sound intense and if the first one was just kill a hellhound then who knows what the others have in store and even if he survives them he might not be the same after them. Dean is just worried about Sam, that's why he wanted to do the trials cause he think his life is worth less than Sam's, it has nothing to do with Dean thinking Sam's incapable or not

+ Sam messed up pretty much already in past seasons & now this season.
Dean still helps & cares a lot about Sam, but I understand Deans reaction & acting now.
Dean also loves Sam, like he always did & always will, but Dean also has his own life, his own needs & wishes.. not everything is about Sam.:x Dean is much more than just a big brother :/
