    I sang this the first time as a freshman at the University of Wisconsin, Madison under the direction of Robert Fountain. He wasted no time getting started on it at the beginning of the semester. This was the first time I'd sung anything like it, just coming out of high school. He told us we would be whistling the riffs in the hallways before too long. And he was right. This may sound quite dissonant and it is based on the 12 tone system, but it's quite melodic and the "harmonies" make sense if you take the time to listen. It's probably quite hard to hear once off. Singing it made all the difference.
    This choir is excellent. I don't like the soprano soloist, but the rest is wonderfully well done!

    Along with the String Trio and the Survivor from Warsaw, one of the group of astonishing, transcendental works Schoenberg wrote as he was reaching the end of his life. Thank you for posting this excellent performance.

    I sang this at the Musikverein in Vienna in 1980 as a member of the Wiener Jeunesse-Chor. Thank you for posting it.

    Who is performing this? They are a very good choir. This has to bee one of the hardest pieces, along with Friede auf Erden, ever written.

      Ensemble Accentus directed by Laurence Equilbey ( I was part of it for years, I sang this with them ) . I recognize the color, and Caroline Chassany 's soloist voice is very unique .

    He wasn't TRYING to shock and offend. He was trying to deconstruct how we're taught to feel about consonance and dissonance, so that people could hear music in a raw form. Also, he didn't write classical music. Classical is an ERA, not really a genre. Bu what can you expect from an uneducated ear?

    This is an incredibly ugly and irritating piece. Schoenberg just got worse and worse, more and more hellishly irritating as he got older. His intention to shock and offend reached its highest point in this piece, his last finished work. Having destroyed music for his own twisted pleasure, I sure hope Schoenberg is in a better place now than the place he put classical music in, in which it remains to this day.

    This piece is just awful.
