    1. Is the rear traction 100% electric? If the battery runs out, does it mean the vehicle is now only FWD?
    2. Is there a possibility to only enable the petrol engine? If I do some offroading I want to have the battery full

    PHEV would have been good 10 or 15 years ago. Now we need FCV and EV.

    • @jsponson
      @jsponson Před 3 lety

      How about PHEV that uses the battery for in-town driving and hydrogen for long-distance? I guess that’d be called FCBHEV? Probably not going to happen because by the time that FC becomes economical, battery tech might have matured to enable long range and quick charging. It’s an idea for heavier vehicles though.

    • @EdgarRenje
      @EdgarRenje Před 3 lety

      @@jsponson FCEVs do have a small battery as buffer, because the fuel cell can't always produce the energy quickly enough.

    • @jsponson
      @jsponson Před 3 lety

      @@EdgarRenje I'm aware of that, and FCV uses the battery for regenerative braking as well. However, that's not the point of my suggestion. I meant the battery would be large enough to store enough energy for in-town driving, and you plug it in to recharge of course. Hydrogen is only used for extended-range driving, not to charge the battery for shorter trips. One example I can think of is the Mercedes GLC F-Cell.

    • @EdgarRenje
      @EdgarRenje Před 3 lety

      @@jsponson I don't think that's very useable. It makes the whole vehicle very heavy and needs a lot of space of both systems.

    • @jsponson
      @jsponson Před 3 lety

      @@EdgarRenje Agreed on space but I think weight should actually be an advantage over BEV. This FC range extender can reduce the battery size by 60~80 kWh, which can weigh 400~500 kg (using Chevy Bolt and TM3 as references). The fuel cell stack and tanks weight about a third of that (borrowing the Mirai’s figures). In terms of space, I think FC tech still has much room for improvement. In the future it might be no bigger than an ICE & fuel tank range extender setup. However, like my earlier concern with cost, by the time that happens, battery tech might have advanced to negate the need for a range extender. Anyway, just throwing this idea out for fun.

      @biggityboggityboo8775 Před 3 lety

      @@sterpumihai That's not the way that hybrids typically work. Especially not cars like the Prius. The two drive trains are all combined into one unit. You don't really have two separate systems. Adding in more parts just means more points of failure.
      What you are saying is largely true for electric cars with a range extender. Like variants of the the BMW i3 used to be. They only have a single, electric, drive train to the wheels. So are very reliable. But then have a small petrol engine and generator too. When the battery gets low those turn on and the electricity generated runs the motor.
