I was in a JUNIOR ballet company. One of the girls who was a senior in high school started bleeding through her pointe shoe on stage and kept dancing. The only reason nobody noticed is because they were already painted red. She did so many turns and finished the entire routine. When our director told us about it she then finished by saying “You need to have this much dedication! This is what you should strive for!” I quit two years later.

I was a ballet dancer until i had to have my Achilles tendon reconstructed because they started me on pointe too young. So many of us end up seriously injured
@CorbCorbin not gonna lie, it was the most painful experience of my life. Woke up screaming the first night I got home because I tried to move my leg in my sleep. Yes, the names are so symbolic in this movie! The company director is named Thomas Leroy; Thomas means “twin” (a reference to the white swan and the black swan, as well of the themes of duality that show up throughout the film) and Leroy is a variation of the French word for “king” (referring to his position within the company and how he treats his dancers, as well as how his dancers see him). The name Nina means “little girl” (this connection is pretty obvious), and the name of Nina’s mother, Erica, means “eternal ruler” (also pretty obvious within the context of how she treated Nina).
that's so interesting! I always wondered about her name since she's supposed to be the darker one, but when I think "Lily" I think of a pure white flower. the Lilith connection makes more sense.
I think that scene of her mirror scratching wasn’t a hallucination but actually her reality, she has a scratching anxiety tik/ obsession that she hides from herself as we never see her do it but see the effects of it
Scratching anxiety can be a big problem. Most of the time, you would scratch at un-noticeble spot to the regular part when it look like a normal scratch. But people who got this need to be watched and beware as it can give a dangerous bleeding wound.
Love how you did an older movie that’s been out for some time now. Black Swan is probably my most favorite movie of Natalie Portman’s and made me see her as a recognized actress. The reality of her psychological break is often times true for people who’ve been put under intense pressure by their parents, themselves, & peers for years. The desperation for being “perfect” can be all too relatable.
I LOVE this film. It’s one of the perfect examples of how to do a psychological horror film properly. This film shows why mental health is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.
I love this along with Whiplash, I always saw them as companion films. But here’s the kicker: I believe that Black Swan had the “Happy Ending” whereas Whiplash had the “Darker Ending”. My reasoning is that while both Nina and Andrew were striving to achieve perfection and both did, Nina’s passing leaves her to stay in the height of perfection, whereas Andrew, achieving perfection at such a young age, will not only have to maintain that level, but even have to go higher since he’s still alive and you are only as good as your last piece of work. So while Nina’s journey is done at a high note, Andrew’s nightmare has only begun.
Sucks she dies at the end but it makes sense. In the original story of Swan Lake, Odette kills herself due to the fact that she has lost the true love that could free her from her permanent white swan state. Nina relates to Odette in that she has never fallen in love, she has no real family, and she is alone in her world. Odette let the black swan take any chance of happiness she had, as Nina let her obsession with perfecting the role destroy her life. Both characters were consumed by the black swan, the price for both of which was death.

The scene with the cake was Nina's mother trying to sabotage her role. She does it 3 times. The cake, not waking her up, then calling her out sick. Her mom resents Nina because she thinks her getting preggo with Nina ruined her career. Later we learn that her career wasnt so great anyways, because she was 28 & never got out of the corps. Who said she died?? We didn't get to see anything except for Nina passed out rightfully since she's been performing with an open wound. It's an open ending that left the door open for us to create different endings and i honestly like to believe she was rushed to hospital to get treatment for her wound and then psychiatric evaluation and maybe a few months or even years in therapy to get back to normal
The delivery is what makes it a psychological horror not necessarily the story or its contents/motive. Notice Thomas is wearing gray when they're watching Lily which shows a blending of the personalities and a switch over. He wearing gray when Lily and Nina are together watching each other at 11 minutes 30
His apartment is also decorated in black and white.
Even when I’ve seen a movie multiple times and understand it with no confusion at all..I still LOVE to watch/listen to you explain the film. Thank you for your great content and uniquely awesome delivery! 😁👍💙
Can’t believe ppl are calling Lily a friend to Lily when Nina literally drugged her.
I feel like Nina saw that and decided she was fine with it. Remember Lily kept reassuring her it would only last a few hours tops
@@Jess-Rabbit Nina wasn’t fine with it. She confronted Lily abt it and was mad. Lily did it to sabotage her though. She knew Nina would wake up late cause if it. She’s never don’t drugs before.
@@Dolphinboi ty sis
I'm pretty sure she told her she was giving it to her, right? I can't remember
35:41 the part nina transforms into the black swan is here.. absolutely terrifying
every conversation i have in my daily life somehow reroutes to “i can’t believe nope (2022) was snubbed by almost every and all awards show.” please help, i can’t stop
It's true! That's why it was cool to see it win in Dead Meat's horror awards, especially when they went over how much consideration went into the production
11:31 it was mentioned on reddit that Thomas is not seen walking to Nina, he simply just appears. He was never there, just another hallucination by Nina.
I remember watching this when I was younger and it genuinely felt like a horror movie to me. I appreciate finally getting an explanation.
This movie actually scared me at the same time made me think about a lot of things. The obsession, what it does to us and everything about mental illnesses. My favourite movie of all time fr
When Thomas is wearing black he's evil when was wearing white he's coddling her
And the wearing of gray is like the devil on your shoulder angel on your shoulder blended, but you need to go through the gray @28:25 to get to the dark/black swan
The gray clothes everyone wears it's not a neutral or third persona. What it means is there in the middle of either shifting to White or Black swan personas metaphorically
Mom sure acted nice when she wore White
I’m really glad my mom never did any of this crazy shit to me as a kid, I was a proud tomboy growing up. I’d never even imagined being a ballerina or a pageant girl like so many are today. I feel so deeply, genuinely sorry for those girls who will have to endure trauma inflicted by the person who should protect them the most😭
this movie is perfect for anyone whos struggling to evolve themselves. Its encouraging and liberating
Their 'E/drug' part was probably the most realistic I've ever seen on screen!
This movie is one of my favs! I was lucky to see it in the theatres.
But the rather "sad" ending is so much better as it is referring to "the white swan found freedom through death"
I didn’t think this film was horror. But I love this film so so so much!
The delivery is what makes it a psychological horror not necessarily the story or its contents/motive. Kinda like the struggles of adult life it can be delivered as a part of growning up and Changing or the inevitable force that moves us to dust as our bodies age or as growing into a freedom of sense or being forced into a cage of responsibility
@@kateajurors8640 thanks! And I mean I did have moments when I jumped so it definitely works lol.
Its not... it's a drama with minor horror elements and the word black in the title....
@@kateajurors8640 it's not a horror movie and it barely has horror elements outside of the jumpscares....people have meltdowns, hallucinations and overall paranoia in other genres...it is a drama movie....the academy didn't look at it as a horror movie....horror fans just want a movie with an important oscar
This is one of my favorite movies ever! The symbolism is incredible and not knowing whether anything is really or not is so well done! You can tell a lot of research and effort was done to make this film! Absolutely incredible!
I watched this movie with my parents when I was around 14... It was a very uncomfortable experience to say the least... But Mila Kunis has always been my celebrity crush so that made it a little bit better.
I watched this movie for the first time about a month ago. It was so good! I was slightly confused on some parts of this movie & searched for some kinda explanation online. So happy this was posted! Keep up the good work FoundFlix!
Imagine if they casted Kiera Knightley for the role of Lily
So glad you mention Perfect Blue!
one of my favorite movies of all time i’m so happy you covered this!
My exact response!
She is SO skinny in the movie and it’s sad to think ballerinas are constantly having to starve themselves to stay small
I'm happy you mentioned perfect blue because it definitely deserves recognition!💙
LOVE that you're doing this movie Mr Foundflix!🖤
I love your videos. You explain all the little details and moments of character’s emotions that I can’t quite grasp when watching the film. I need your commentary on every film! Not just horror lol
I just watched this for the first time yesterday, timing was perfection 🤯
you should review perfect blue!! my mind is so blown by the fact the black swan took inspiration from it
this is such a refreshing upload. love your work as always!
“Now when you take a shit, do it AS the black swan.” HAS ME DEAD
This is my favorite film, thank you for covering it!!
Appreciate you recommending Perfect Blue. It's an insane and really sad movie.
Im soooo happy you did this !
Still gives me chills I watch it like I’ve never seen it every time. And perfect blue is definitely a timeless anime
Just really appreciate your analysis and content
Regarding Nina and Lily spending the night, Lily says that she went home with one of the guys at the bar.
Okay you mentioning perfect blue definitely convinced me to watch this (fav animated movie ever)
Yayyyy. I asked for you to do this movie years ago! I'm glad you finally did it. 😊
This is an iconic movie and I really like you referenced Polanski's Repulsion. Definitely had many of the same feels to it.
I loved that you mentioned Perfect Blue! I didnt even think about the similarities but makes sense why i love we both movies 🖤🖤
definitely one of my favorite films every made, ive been waiting for him to make a vid on this
I've been waiting years for this without even knowing it. I LOVE Black Swan.
Damn, when the director goes hard and you dislocate your rib on set and he tells you to "stay in character" and then proceed to record the relocating lmao
Awesome review! Forgot how much I enjoyed this flick and your channel.
I love this movie! Thanks for covering it :) keep going❤
I'm freaking glad you mentioned PERFECT BLUE. it is a must see!!!!
I remember going to the movies to see it when it first came. It was upsettingly beautiful with the surround sound
Loved this movie
Prompted me to watch Darin's other film Requiem for a dream.
I realized that the movie is based on Nina's perspective
I had a time figuring out whats real or in Nina's mind
Requiem for a dream is a trip. That shit scared more than 90% of any horror movies
@@JR-bu7we that movie freaks me out and makes me sad
I always have to watch something upbeat after
I want to check out the one he mentioned repulsions. Sounds creepy by the title lol
@@JR-bu7we that movie made me stick to weed and not watch so much late night tv and buying random stuff 😂
I do hope you cover Satoshi Kon's masterpieces. I know he has Paprika and Perfect Blue but I'm curious about his first story that was made into a film, World Apartment Horror.
As the child of two international ballet dancers
I can tell you they do expect perfection and sometimes it’s unattainable. Had to leave soon as I turned 18 to find my own freedom and even now
When I go over to visit it’s never “hi how are you” it’s always just “fix this, fix that, I don’t like the way youre dressed” just too much too much
I remember seeing this is in the theater when it first came out. This was such a good movie.
Yes I saw this movie 3 times in the theatres and I’m so glad u did a video on it it’s been one of my favorite movies ever!! Thank u!
Amazing work as always! :D
Omggg thank u for making this video! I still remember how i slid into ur dms two years ago just to request black swan and mulholland drive lmao. Love this movie smm
So happy you reviewed this, love this movie
A 40 minute video? I'am all for it
I remember seeing this movie wirh 2 feiends, walking to the car, closing the door, and screaming- "WHAT WAS THAT?!" It felt like a viseral need. And then we immediately got into disecting it together. It was an amazibg experience.
I love when foundflix covers the good movies
Wow i got to watch this movie just the audio description alone sounds amazing!
How i get so blessed to catch this! Aaand under 10 mins of posting!
Horror in the high desert 1 & 2 are both worth covering. Awesome flicks
The video I’ve been waiting on from this channel for years.
Hello. I have loved your videos for years and I am a big Ari Astor fan and just recently watched Beau is Afraid. I am still highly confused about it. I was also confused about I'm Thinking of Ending Things until you explained it, and I have heard that the two are similar in terms of symbolism. If you could explain Beau is Afraid that would be great. Thank you!
