- SOLD Reviewed is this incredibly well preserved Mercedes-Benz 280SL Roadster from Mercedes-Benz, a (final year of production) 1971 model in Signature Silver over Black leather. This is an incredibly solid car that has seen only a cosmetic restoration, with work done to the paint, mechanicals, and interior. Much of the mechanical restoration was performed by Black Forest Motors, a leading repair/restoration center for vintage Mercedes-Benz vehicles. There are receipts for well over $50K in the last few years, including a full overhaul of the engine/fuel system, brakes, axles, and driveline. Cosmetically, the paint is not original, but high quality and properly executed, and the interior leather, carpets, wood, and may controls have been refreshed. The Becker Europa II has been upgraded with a modern auxiliary input, and the air conditioning has been overhauled and remains far colder than in most older German cars. In addition to the extensive service records dating back to the 1980s, the original manuals books, and tools are still with the car, tracing it's ownership back decades - it is believed this is a 3-owner car. When I was 12 I filled out a newspaper advertisement ad for Don Rasmussen Mercedes Benz, Portland, Oreg., to get a brochure... that was in 1971 or 72. After I got the brochure in the mail, a salesman called as a follow up to my inquiry, when my mother answered, she let him know my age and that I was in the 7th grade. He had a good laugh. But I looked at that little booklet over and over for years. It was about 5 x 7 inches, in color, devoting a 2-page spread to each model. I remember them featuring the key to the car with a rubber top, as a safety feature. I rode the bus downtown a few times to see the cars in person and the 1972 auto show.

Great car. There was a weather guy in San Diego who's name was Bob Dale and he had one of these and another car similar from the 60s. He bought both new and I think they were the only 2 cars I ever seen him and his wife with. He showed me the the older ones stereo which used the old tubes to operate. They looked brand new and was definitely something to appreciate.

I love the weather report. This review is an absolute Bill classic. Police state, Porsches with uncle Tommy's remains and diesel idiots. I live on the other side of our country but I sure hope to get to Naples before I croak so that I can meet Bill, the greatest car salesman of all time.
I don't think there's a more beautiful car. Even the Gullwing to me doesn't come close. Its got a "busy" design. This is pure understated beauty.

It actually replaced BOTH the 300SL and the 190SL by threading the needle between them. My grandfather had 3 W113's bought brand-new from Peter Gregg then Brumos in Jacksonville when Porsche & Mercedes were being pedaled under the same roof. He was a mechanical engineer who was going through an all-Mercedes phase at that point, and I remember well him extolling the engineering virtues of Mercedes. He rigged up a hoist in his garage where he attached hooks to the corners of the hardtop and cranked-up a steel cable raising that *very heavy* top up to the ceiling.
Yup these are solid cars and handle great. Just beautiful

it is true, every customer from the US, that I had over in Europe, complained about the same thing: How aggressive they drive in the states... also about the bad quality of the roads
I can definitely attest to that; if you drive proper and polite, you’ll be run over. If you are aggressive then everyone else will want to run you off the road. It’s like everyone has a point to prove or a chip on their shoulders. No one seems to understand yielding and merging, giving and taking right of way, courtesy, decency, and common sense! Don’t get me started on passing etiquette on freeways and highways, or using roundabouts, intersections, and stop signs!
Head up into Canada and it’s already a world of difference! In Europe, many countries actually train their drivers, or at least have far stricter driving enforcement - not here! No one enforces left lane for passing, handsfree/texting driving laws, and other important safety laws!
And the roads are pretty horrific at times. Try driving Massachusetts’ roads and highways, then compare them to a place like New Hampshire, a state that actually regularly does preventative maintenance and infrastructure upgrades - world’s of difference there too!
My parents have been to Naples. Next time I have to go and stop by. Ps I absolutely love your rants especially the one in the beginning and the one about deisel idiots

While in Germany in the late 80’s I bought a 74 280C with the straight six dohc engine. A beautiful green but no options not even the mandatory sun roof and no radio having just a plate with a chrome 280C on it. Had halogen headlights making the front look better

I feel the same way too bill Each time I'm driving especially during the evening I feel like when I'm driving you got these assholes Cut in front of me try to run me off the road when a turn Especially when I'm driving my 39 years old Mercedes 240d as older than these Millennium drivers I don't know When to yield or approach when incoming cars coming I feel like when I had my license 25 years ago It was a lot better Then the way how the traffic flows now everybody's in such a hurry all the time especially on the highway I notice And the cops are at restaurants or eating donuts That don't care about safety Or half time for these idiots that like to drive all over the place that I notice.. But I gotta say older Mercedes classic Mercedes are the best. I love those cars because the interior and it's well made and they last forever, especially the convertibles.
