- UConn football was the definition of a dead program. They had only one bowl appearance in a decade, had no fans in the stands and no one cared about them. Everything changed when Jim Mora took over as head coach though as they have a new energy, pulled off a huge upset and have a winning season in year one. Today, we will talk about the Huskies program, how they have done this year and what has led to their impossible rise, enjoy!

Mora should really be in COTY discussions. A possible 7-5 season isn't that eye-popping on paper, but considering how absolutely abysmal Uconn football was the last half decade or so, what he's accomplished is nothing short of amazing

Ive been following uconn Football the last 6 or so years. I don’t think people really understand just how exactly BAD we were. We had the worst defense in FBS history last year. We barely beat fcs teams like barely. This turn around is nothing short of a miracle
The defense should be somewhere on that three reasons list...

I live in CT and have been a fan of UCONN everything since I was a kid. Pretty sure when I was in high school UCONN even played in a NYE 6 Bowl Game. (Got blown out by Oklahoma) After the last 2 seasons I'd given up all hope on UCONN football....they had a very hard 1st half of the schedule this year playing 3 ranked teams. (2 top 10) I really think that toughened them up. Mora has pulled off a miracle... too bad they couldn't beat Arny today ....they've ALWAYS had trouble with triple option offense though. Hopefully we can go bowling this year!!!
It's nice seeing these schools that are more known for Basketball have pleasantly decent/good seasons in Football
Man I’m glad you glossed over UConn beating South Carolina in the Papa John Pizza Bowl, my dad went to that game, said it was cold as hell and the Gamecocks came out in pre game and looked cold and not wanting to be there, he said UConn came out and looked like they was ready to play in the Super Bowl, he knew at that moment South Carolina was fucked 😂

I've been a part of the marching band program at UConn for almost 7 years now, starting my time here right after that 2015 bowl game. The best way I can describe those years in football terms is depressing.
That is, until Jim Mora showed up. From day 1, I noticed that there was something different about the way he appreciated this program and the love and care he put into it. He made it a point to come and talk to the marching band on multiple occasions and express his desire for us to be a part of a winning formula. All the coaches before him did similar things, but this was the first time I believed one. He's a straight-up, genuine guy and I'm super thankful we have him here.
The downfall was never making Hank Hughes the head coach. Right after Randy pulled his stupid Maryland stunt they had the perfect opportunity right there to just make him head, and then find another OC. Same staff, they would've continued and would've went to bigger bowl games. Last true bowl game was when they faced the Sooners.
I want to see Uconn get their just due. I'm originally from Connecticut but I've been living in South Carolina most of my life. I'm a huge Gamecock fan. But.... my heart is still in CT. I want this team to really shine for the Constitution State!

Glad UCONN at least finished bowl eligible. They have the same success Kansas Jayhawks had this season.

As a Connecticut native and uconn fan it’s awesome to finally see them having some success. Having players and coaches who actually believe in the program and winning is crucial. Hopefully they can use this year to broaden their recruiting spectrum and sign better recruits from all parts of the country. Very excited for the future
Nice Job. Nice to see CT football featured. I'm going to nitpick one thing. Randy Edsall. His last name Rhymes with Pretzel when you pronounce it. I caught it the first time and then watched a couple local Affiliate reports on him to be sure. Its hard to know how to pronounce proper names of people and places. When people bicker I tell them the only way to really know is to ask someone who has lived there or visited , etc.

The Uconn defense has been awesome. A complete turnabout..I was stunned when Mora was hired as head coach. Completely out of the blue. He has done an amazing job.The only down side is that their attendance figures for home games are still very low....

When they announced a former UCLA head coach that managed to pull up one of the best defenses the pac12 has seen in a while and almost made a cfp bid with josh rosen, that he was going to UConn, being that I’m from there you can imagine how pumped all of us die hard Uconn women and men’s basketball fans were when we heard this news. I was not expecting 6 wins in his first season, we beat Boston College and I know they are BC but they’re still power 5 goddammit, this team has made me so happy as a fan of New England sports. If we got a bowl win over a p5 team it would trump the Seahawks Patriots Super Bowl win. We am so happy with this team, UCONN, HUSKIES, UCONN, HUSKIES, UCONNNNNNN HUSKIEEESSSS
I came across this video a little late so to update, Coach Mora is 9 wins and 15 losses in regular seasons games in two-seasons. I look forward to at least a 9-3 regular season record in 2024 and that will put the program at 18-18 in regular season games under Coach Mora. I thought the only bad offensive call under the prior offensive coordinator was the first offensive play against Marshall in the bowl game a backward pitch play for a team that hadn't been to a bowl game in a long time, with that said Nick Charlton will be missed. The first game this year against Maryland and the third game against Duke are must win games, then followed by a six-game home stand 9-3 is expected.

What’s bizarre is that this team has a really good defense and are sitting at a potential 7-5 season WITH NO DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR since before the season started. Our DC left before the season started and if we muscled out two close games this team could have been 8-3 this is mind blowing.

Randy Edsall did get canned… he tried to head it off by “announcing his retirement at the end of the season” but the AD was like “that’s cool you can start retirement effective right now”.
UConn's football problems began when Edsall left for Maryland after the 2010 season.. It wasn't that he left for a new head coaching job. Coaches do that all the time. The coach normally informs the school administration after the last game of the season..Edsall didn't do this. He waited until after their bowl game to tell everyone he was heading to Maryland. He cost the school 1 and 1/2 months of time when they could have begun looking for a new head coach. This also set back their recruiting. The domino effect. Edsall left Uconn behind the 8 ball in the way he left.I've never heard of a coach leaving in such a manner..

A big problem with UCONN is they play half an hour away from the actual campus. The stadium was originally supposed to be for the Patriots but they of cource ended up in Foxborough. The stadium is terrible and is usually half empty. They need to have one on campus

It wasn't supposed to be for the Patriots. The Stadium that the Pats would've played in was going to be a Riverfront Stadium on the Connecticut River. Dad was one of the officials talking to Robert Kraft. He (Kraft) took what it was offered to Boston.
When the deal blew up, Pratt-Whitney donated their unused Airport to the state for a football stadium. It is a 40k seat stadium, expandable to 70k. The town of Mansfield (Where UConn is located) didn't want a stadium. Now after 20 years, the stadium needs an upgrade and people are still trying to put it on campus. Mansfield is still against the idea.
As a UMass fan, this is pure pain. We literally beat them and stormed the field last year, now we’re (still) by far the worst team in FBS and they’re bowling

As a fan of Northeastern US football, I hope soon UMass will be great, too. I'm a UConn fan (I dad went there) and all of their athletic teams are great (their baseball team is underrated). My three favorite FBS teams are UConn, Penn State (dad has a few PSU Jerseys and an autograph from JoePa, since he met him at his uncle's house in 1973. Dad's family had PSU season tix since 1930s.

NOT a UCONN fan. But I understand and admire them for fighting on. They beat my Fresno State Bulldogs. Those kids have heart and are starting to believe.
According to a few player testimonials I got, Edsall was running an extremely toxic program. Wasn't really checked in, just there to make money before his retirement. The greatest success of his tenure with UConn the second time around was recruiting Nate Carter and Jackson Mitchell... Not much else.
Agreed, his 2nd tenure at UConn was just awful. The 2018 team set college records for bad defense....
Edsall is and will always be a major clown. He was never a good coach, it was always everyone around him.

How did UConn save its program?
By scheduling Fresno State. Elon musk level big brain move.
By hiring Mora and going independent. They can now put 3-4 P5s on the schedule every year and round out the schedule with intriguing regional matchups fans care about. We can also schedule buy games at some of the most tradition filled road venues- places like Clemson, Michigan, Ohio St, Tennessee. They’re all on our schedule. That excites recruits.
No offense to our former conference mates- Tulane is having a great season for instance- but our fans are far more interested in seeing BC, Syracuse or UMass at The Rent than Tulane, Tulsa or SMU. Those regional rivals may not be the better teams but they draw far more local interest and put a little juice in the fanbase. There’s something different when you can talk sh*t to your friends and coworkers who went to those schools after you beat them. No one in CT knows anyone who went to East Carolina so no one cares about them, even if they go 10-2.
Getting a buzz with the fans, which our Indy schedule has allowed us to do, creates an atmosphere recruits want to play in, which in turn will help us win games. Conference realignment has killed many regional rivalries and taken some of the fun out of college football. We chose to essentially create our own regional conference by going indy

The turn around will be more lasting if they can attract more highly rated players and transfers that get buried on their first team and want a chance.
4star QB and Two 3star guys to start off 2024 recruiting isn't to shabby I think it'll only get better and become a more attractive school if they get 8 or more wins this season. Joining the Big 12 wouldn't hurt either.

Bowl selection is not guaranteed since they are not in a conference meaning if there is too many 6 win teams uconn would be to first team out from bowl selection

Coach Mora loves coaching. He starts off hot, but has a tendency to fade over time. I hope he does succeed at UConn.
