  • In this interview, Glen talks to Dr Mike Reeves, President and Professor of Theology at Union School of Theology. He is the author of many books including, The Good God and Christ Our Life. They talk about how can we know what God is really like, and how in Jesus, we see a surprising God of love, not a bully in the sky.
RESET is a series of conversations exploring the meaning crisis. With the help of cultural analysts and biblical scholars we're going back to the beginning - to Genesis, the West's great origins story - to hear the ancient texts speaking today.
Glen Scrivener is an ordained church minister and filmmaker. In this series he asks questions about conflict, suffering, death, sex, equality, science, and what it means to be human. This is the eleventh interview in the RESET series: • RESET Interviews

Liked the way Michael Reeves brought out the dignity of Eve being created last. Too often ‘last’ is understood pejoratively but in the ‘crescendo’ of God’s creative activity ‘last’ must be understood as His ultimate and finest creative act and gift.

Thanks guys. Very encouraging conversation. I think it's really wise to keep going back to the character of Jesus while engaging with other questions.

It's interesting because Dr. Reeves often talks about the fact that he was at All Souls Langham Place, and many of us know he was Rev. Dr. Paul Blackham's first lay assistant. Yet when directly questioned about his theology, no credit is given to Paul... Despite how heavily Mike's recent books have pulled from Paul's work (e.g. anyone who has seen the original Frameworks materials from the early 00s can see the content and graphics of The Good God have been heavily inspired by Rev Dr. Blackham's notes).
Crediting the people who have shaped our thinking and theology doesn't minimise our work - in fact, the opposite is true.
It's great that we can promote Jesus-centred thinking but especially in academic work and publishing, we need to be very careful about citing our sources.

Great conversation! What would you say to those looking for this definitively loving, giving God and landing in the Old Testament....and objecting to what seems to be a predominantly egocentric, judgemental and punitive God (albeit forgiving after he has wiped out a few thousand)?

"A lot of people come to the Bible and when they open it up at Gen 1 they expect to find some dreary god plodding out his wares."
    Haha Classic Reeves

The church has certainly done a poor job at times of making God and christianity seem appealing, but let's be proportional in assigning blame. After all, one of the founding biblical stories is one of rebellion DESPITE goodness and perfection.
