- Close to the Medieval port of Teignmouth a 300 year old shipwreck has been discovered. Join the Time Team for another dig into Britain's history.
Season 3, Episode 4:
#TimeTeam #SpanishArmada #Shipwreck
In their first underwater excavation, the Team examine the remains of a ship wrecked 400 years ago off the Devon coast. Does enough of it remain to identify it? Was it part of the Spanish Armada?
Time Team is a British TV series following specialists who dig deep to uncover as much as they can about Britain's archaeology and history.
Tony's Day One getup is the most 90's outfit I've ever seen.
Well, since this was recorded in the 90's...
Proper Dating evidence
Okay
As i was born in the 60s I would have to disagree. I have seen much more 90s getups.
@@private15 I was born 74 - in the nineties I was between 16 and 26 - it's pretty much spot on for 90ies "normal daily"
What a joy to watch this episode. This is from 3 decades ago when I tried to watch every episode possible, but this one I never saw
This must be the first episode of Brine Team. Still favourite program after years.
Love seeing these people, with their passion for the past, getting the attention they deserve. The pay is low, there's little chance of fame outside their circle, but they get to spend a lifetime doing what they love.
Loving the work you do... and having great people to do it with... that’s the dream.
For me, Phil makes this show his accent reminds me of home in Norfolk. Could re-watch these over and over again.
In one episode, Phil had his ancestry checked and He is 100% British born and bred going back 4000 years on mothers and fathers side. Not many can say that.
@Clayton Shearer My grandma had our's checked on her side, my dads , but it only went back to the 900's AD.
I like Phil too
I love that professor aston was wearing a t shirt with sitting bull. Bless his memory.
I am a Biblical Scholar....that being said. IF you look up the ETYMOLOGY of the word BLESS.......You will find it ORIGINALLY meant.....POUR BLOOD ON AN ALTAR. Didn't know that did you? www.etymonline.com/word/bless
@@Thoth_al_Khem purpose was the same tho
@@Thoth_al_Khem after reading that I will definitely say "bless" even more
So basically they poured blood on an altar for you to protect or help you.
BRING BACK TIME TEAM PLEASE!!!
It's back. Sort of. Some of the old staff and some new faces. Just search for Time Team 2022
This is another fascinating episode of the incomparable Time Team.
Good work by the camera crew being able to film everything under water without being in the way!
This show is pure class
This episode is so beautiful. A subtle display of parallels in time. Capturing the power the sea can have over the complex yet fragile nature of humans. Your team was amazing! Blessings to all,❤️from🇺🇸
That gun they t fired was a very early breech loading gun. Later guns were cast while and were muzzle loading. The metal technology of the time had them made of bronze and banded to keep them from exploding. Again the later cast guns didn’t need the banding and the chamber could withstand the force of the explosions which the early breed loaders couldn’t
watching tony comfort phil warmed my ❤ ❤
2:10 "Nick is getting a much better view...of the crumpet suntanning on the beach."
Mick would have a hay day with today’s technology
I love time team
Million times better than later episodes: it has beautiful, natural, honest flow, with real comunication and reactions, it draws you in, and you feel like you'r there among them. Also, without constant dumbing down and underestimation of the viewer. But off course, I still watch all of them 😀💜♾️
Absolutely wonderful thank you. Love you all
Love Time Team
Nice to have youtube and no - geoblocking -. 21 years ago and the team, with the exception of Professor Aston, is still around. sure, also new people but still a great series.
Episode 13 (Season 3, Episode 4) A Wreck of the Spanish Armada, Aired: January 28, 1996
Those pastries look so yummy.
I've seen other videos where Phil looked like an old pro at diving. It's funny to here that this was some of his very first diving. I can imagine Phil going on a dive cruise f vacation(holiday).
Sad to see four members of the team in this episode have passed away :(
Apart from Mick and Victor, who else?
@@mariancroome1478 Berick Morley and Robin Bush
That's SO sad. I truly like them and the easy humour they all shared..
Thanks for posting.
Good one!
Broadcast date: 28 January 1996.
Thank you!
Goddamn I love this show. I was about 9 years old when this episode came out. Takes me back.
The intro is like the Fast Show of the 90's with very eclectic folk doing their particular stuff. Great show btw.
Baric is so wonderful. ❤
They should have had Phil on his dive break out his trowel and start scratching on sea bottom with Narrator saying Old habits are hard to break.
Groovy.
Tony is like Whiskey, better the older he gets 😉 He was cool in the 90s but he's more handsome now day's.
How nice. A boat with the name of one of the Dutch islands.
An island known to be surrounded by shipwrecks.
Gonna say it, ID LOVED to have been with this group while the firing of the cannon..to have both Robin and Mick there would be Awesome-tacular..✌️🥃🥰
2 meters vis?? damm good for the channel and a sand/mud bottom. must not be much current at teignmouth like there is at spithead!
Phil had sick sideburns back then.
And red to boot. I just like him.. 💗
Tony is the goat!😎👍
I'm from Tennessee, and as Southerners we always say "I reckon"!
Trenches under water?!? Well, we gotta dig idnt we?
Shiver me timbers! 🎉
The lack of guns says that either the locals found out about the wreck and picked up most of them, or it was a merchant ship. Warship had more guns than five or six. And they were usually of one type and caliber, these were different.
46:33 made me laugh. Tony and his romantic views xD
07:30 ish. It is nice to see these two, but also sad.
Dutch diving ship called Terschelling with britisch flag???? Be aware, the Dutch are closer then you thought ;)
Phil and Tony are so young here. 😊
whoo hoo first comment yay. Under water archaeology is the best. I can just see Dr Harding with an eye patch and a cutlass lol.
Watching them discharge the cannon was hysterical. 😅
The Great Lakes of Canada & USA have had many wrecks.
None as old, though.
Still pissed that no American network exec picked up this show for us to see from day one.
They're all so young! And she is gorgeous.
Phil Harding has aged like a fine wine, lol
@@amandahugginkiss55 hi there, Amanda! I recognize your name. Erin Joy Garvie Jones is my daughter!
Do I need to come over there and teach your Dad how to throw a Frisbee? Absolutely loving that Bonnie Dog. So happy for the both of you.

Ty mate, was looking for this info.
Is Phil wearing a yellow Hardcore band T shirt? Looks like it says "Evaluator"
wow just like raising the Mary Rose that was some sight .
Corenza🥰🥰
With it being so close to the shore The locals at the time probably salvaged everything the country
The last ad was from The Venetian Casino in Las Vegas. Coincidence?
Miami vice Tony
Tony’s got hair!!
Poor Phil
I'd love to think that the back story of this episode is that they wanted an excuse to hang at the beach for a week and needed to still shoot an episode lol
I think to investigate underwater, time team should have had more days to do it.
But then it wouldn't be Time Team ;)
Mr Schmorgus Lol. Very true!
The Gun: They could have used a tight ball of paper to make so much more of a show!
I was weirder out by, of all things, a no-smoking sign aboard the survey ship. I forgot how ubiquitous smoking used to be. I very much doubt smoking is allowed anywhere aboard, these days.
My parents said the most realistic thing about the first season of stranger things is how much everyone was smoking lmao. I was too young to remember that Era. By the time I have memories places were starting to ban indoor smoking. Definitely for the best
He was 25 years younger
Was this ship ever identified ? What was the cargo?
Has Tony Robinson ever not looked ancient?
🤔 no.
Yeah in these early episodes. And on black adder
Ah a Dutch boat :)
Oh wow, this is an early one isn't it.
Baldrick...
Would someone pleas tell me the origin of "Teign"? To me as an American of Scotch descent, this is an intriguing word.
Wikipedia says it means "mouth of the stream" in the local dialect of the day.
@@Evan-st5df Thanks
Did I miss something? They conducted a survey of the bottom that was not capable of detecting waterlogged timbers, hoping to detect wooden timbers that had been underwater for 600 years. Im sure there is something Im not understanding. Somebody enlighten me.
They were hoping to find metal I think
They were looking for nails and other metal fittings that would have been embedded in the wood.
@@justmebeingme398 They were using acoustic search gear and waterlogged wood and sand look the same. Metal objects and other hard surfaces would have shown up.
They were hoping to find hardwood that hadn’t been waterlogged.
@@johnemerson1363 And yet, there were plenty of nails once they got down to a good level. The magnetometer must not have been strong enough.
I miss Mick
"Sand suckers" the technical term for dredges. :D
These guys (that’s on the boat) are fishes. It’s like they didn’t want Time Team their. It’s just a filling that I got.
It started with the xray of the ocean floor. Those guys weren’t making any since. Even though they found a boat I wonder if it’s the boat they were looking for.
You want to try again...in English, please
@@twinsonic 😆....we're still waiting, aren't we?
tony looks 25 years younger with hair.
Well it was over 20 years ago!
@@patriotofgod9827 He appears with hair and without the hat
@@grumpylimey4539 I was about to say this one occurred probably 25 (or close to that) years ago, but you beat me to it! It was in the 90's. Tony has hair and it's still dark in the 90's. Then suddenly gets shorter and lighter in the 2000s. And also Phil is much skinnier back then (hell he is 70 now so can't blame him there!)
Edit: It aired January 28, 1996. Therefore filmed approx 25 years ago! 😄
I looked 25 years younger 25 years ago.
He was at least 20 years younger here. LOL
Yes.tony looks rather smart.. with dyed long hair..hat and his usual cheerful personality...
Carenza Lewis = skinny Ben Affleck
GEO PHYS HOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
What happened to Phil? Was he sick?
Seasick, I think.
Is it likely any capable sea captain would bring a vessel into a dangerous inlet, in a severe storm ⛈ at night?
Question is if he has a choice in that matter I suppose
Watching in 2024 and ... OMG ... did we really wear that? - um - yes ... gulp
So, it's NOT a wreck of the Spanish Armada, its just a Venetian trading vessel. So why the misleading title?
It seems strange to see Tony with hair
Is mick wearing at tshirt with the saying to paraphrase "Only when all thats left to eat is money will you realize it wont let you live" it looks it and frankly sounds like him. He was a very composed noncomformist in a weird kinda way
do the Spanish just call it "The Armada"?
Do the English call it, the Channel?
Phil is still hot, bad knees, gray hair and all❤😊
Chris seem nice but a bit of a prat. Maybe just not really happy to be there.
Monty Python..."We found this spoon Sir"
Didn't dive in 12 months? Because of the 5 storms? Thats ridiculous.
A Miller light ad at the beginning of this?
Really American pilsner?
43:59 Considering it went down in 10 feet of water, I'd say 'the locals' would have known even if it had gone down at night...insert eye roll emoji here
@Brisdad53 Masts of a trading vessel from that era would be taller than...10 feet...thus be sticking out of the water....duh....not so smart yourself. And as it was a small town at the time, it most likely had more than 10 people within a 2-3 mile stretch....duh....
The water was likely much deeper then and the coastline much less populated.
@@harbourdogNL It went down in an horrendous storm and the masts, etc., would almost certainly all have been broken and the hull probably lay on it's side anyway.
Tony looks drunk af at the airport
The cloudy wallaby causally signal because pelican spindly grease like a violet difference. grumpy, halting lion
That's the worst dredge I've ever seen and the dive archeology guy, well my mum said if you don't have anything nice to say. =)
The annoying quail worrisomely clear because aftermath aerobically lighten throughout a lavish crate. automatic, nebulous stocking

Carenza needs to shut up when men are talking. Her constant interruptions are so irritating.
You need to stop your misogynic whining. They are so irritating.
@@malinlindqvist3455 - Oooh an offended woman is talking, I better do what she says and shut up and get back in my place!!
Idiotic comment.
You are quite a pittyful creature texting rubbish. I guess your must feel quite lonely.
BRING BACK TIME TEAM PLEASE!!!
Wouldn't be the same tho.
Half the crew is to old to dig, and the most important person; Mick Aston, is gone.
And without the original team, Time Team will never be as good.
You could see that in season 20, after Mick quit. Their viewer ratings went down like a reverse tornado.

@@nicolejosan6364 lol I know, been watching since day 1, ofc. And I stick with what I said.
@@Schmorgus yes, I agree. The new team just doesn't feel like the old did. From Day 1
@@nicolejosan6364 I feel like the presenter doesn't have the energy that Sir Robinson has. He's to calm and mellow imo. And they skip details that felt important, like the talks at the pub, and the friendly squabble between diggers during excavations. There's no "personal touch" to it now, sadly.
