Calgary police remove homeless encampment after complaints of violence

- Calgary police say they have removed an encampment from an industrial area in the city’s southeast following several reports of serious criminal offences and a large amount of garbage within the encampment.
Sgt. Trent Barker Peterson said the encampment was “surprisingly large.”
“They were very well hidden. From speaking with them, they had been there almost a year, and we were largely unaware of their presence there until these disturbance and weapons calls started coming in,” he said.
Police say the operation began late last year after they received complaints of people being threatened with hammers, axes and guns and culminated in several people being arrested in late February of this year on outstanding warrants.

A large contibutor to homelessness is addiction. There are NEVER any large or even small scale drug busts any more, plus decriminalization. Unless this changes and drug trafficking receives enforcement and harsher penalties this situation will continue to worsen.

@@professionalboycottservice7872 Finland figured out something more along the lines of what you’re thinking of. Providing free housing to homeless people. What I propose is a change in the legislation surrounding new constructions that’s it. I don’t know how it is where you live, but where I live it’s extremely difficult to build a new construction, let alone get a construction loan. Not to mention the limited access to even a rental. The lack of housing available inflates the cost of any mortgage that you could get not to mention any rental properties, you may have access to. This is an issue I think of daily, and I don’t think it serves anyone you or I to be giving free housing to people. Shelter is one thing, but then again, I am not an expert. I could be wrong on that as well, and am willing to consider that. If you watch, John Oliver “last week tonight “he recently did a story that you may or may not be interested in regarding Finland and their housing initiatives. There’s some strong arguments there I will say.

The effort and expense of cleaning up the encampment is wasted if the housing shortage and rent inflation continue.
