    Thanks for sharing another fun adventure! I'm really on the fence about that murex you found. It either has to be a Rose Murex or a Cabarets Murex. The problem is when they wear down like that they become almost indistinguishable between one another. I took a look at some photos of both and sometimes a Rose Murex can be a bit on the lighter side and sometimes they are a vibrant rose when fresh. If I was forced to pick between the two I'd agree with you and say it was a Rose Murex because those tend to be a bit more common in the Marco area (although not a common find by any means). The reverse is true (at least from my experiences) that Cabarets are more common in the Sanibel area. Also a really nice alphabet cone you found there. Can't wait till January I'll be heading down to Marco maybe I'll be lucky and see you there :)!

    • @SWFBeachLife

      I would LOVE to find a cabarets murex! I love all things spiny! And you are so right about the shells being hard to identify once they're worn down a bit.
      Marco seems to be pretty good for the shelling! I've been there three times so far and it was pretty good each time we went. I hope you find lots of shells when you come down in January. If you see a lady walking around with a bright orange shell bag that most likely is me - please stop me and say hi!

      I think the reason they are one of my favorites is because you can almost ALWAYS find these guys. They are definitely a "common" shell and not hard to find at all. So if I have limited shelling time (tide coming in) and I think there are others shells to be found I might pass them by. That being said I would LOVE to find an albino one of them. I've seen many shells but never one of those. Yet. Thanks for coming along with me Corey!

    Wow! Good job! I knew I shoulda hit marco island on Sundays neg low tide. Do you think south beach is better then tigertail now that you've done both?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Před 3 lety +1

      Hmmmm. Well Tigertail is a lot more walking for sure, which I like. Both times I visited I liked what I found. The South end seemed to really only have good shells over that jetty, which is probably only accessible during a really low tide. I definitely would try the south end again but I feel like Tigertail might be a better option if someone only has one chance to go shelling. I'll have to walk the whole island and see how I feel after that!

    Hi, thank you for another wonderful shelling video! Could I ask you why is it that tulips can be called "rookie" shells? I hope I got the spelling right. :)

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Před 3 lety +2

      That is the correct spelling! Rookie means someone new, like the first year someone is on a professional sports team. I ran into an older gentleman that likes to shell over on Sanibel. We exchanged pleasantries and we asked each other what shells we had found. I told him I had found some banded tulips and he told me those were "rookie shells." I told this story in a previous video, so once in a while I'll call banded tulips "rookie shells." Thank you so much for watching!

    How do you know if it will be a NEGATIVE low tide?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Před 3 lety

      I have an app called Tide Charts (free from the App store if you have an iPhone). It's very easy to navigate once you figure out what tide station you want to get info from. You'll see the tide numbers listed and anything below 0 (zero) is considered a negative tide. Basically it's just a really, really low tide and exposes more beach so its easier to get to hard to reach places :) Hope that helps - thank you for watching!

    Why do you call tulip shells rookie shells?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Před 3 lety +1

      I had run into this older gentleman on Sanibel - I've seen him several times on my walks. Us shellers will sometimes chat to see what others are finding and I told him I had found a few tulips. He called them "rookie" shells. He likes the cones and I guess shells that are a little more exotic. It's kind of an inside joke but I'm going to keep looking for them! Thank you for coming along with me!

      I took two tips to Sanibel and only found two banded tulips. I did find thousands of bites from sand fleas so I haven’t been back. My husband had no reaction to the sand fleas. If I find a way to avoid the bites I would be back to search for more tulips
