When children’s TV was educational. Without shouting presenters and self obsessed Instagram narcissists.
Getting rid of the Mail rail was a mistake..that many more Van's on the road now!
Bring it back!
Are the tunnels just lying redundant now ?
@@09weenic You can visit them on a tour and I think you can even go for a spin.
Mainly because they closed down the main mail centres as distribution hubs like King Edward, WDO and Whitechapel (Where I worked) A shame as there was no need for that, the mail rail system worked so well for many years.
@@West.Ham1964 Yes ,Great shame...the huge distribution centre on Rathbone Place/Oxford street is luxury flats now last time I walked past if I remember..so the distribution centres are on the outskirts now?
@@borderlord Most postal stuff these days is parcels instead of envelopes. Be harder to handle down there.
I worked at the KEB LONDON. LOVED being a postman in the city late 1988/89.
Well done
All goes by road now, so much for those in charge wanting to make things greener!
Those old Royal Mail vans are so cool!
Imagine just typing postcodes for every letter that passes along your conveyor belt
Yep, Slough MLO ☝
Starsky and Hutch cardigan going on right there.
Yeah very San Francisco chic! Classic. What's the deal with the floppy hat though?😉
Doesn't jenny climb out of a swimming pool wearing this cardigan , in one of the episodes?
@@CARLIN4737 I'm sure there is one in the start of S&H? It was LA though, wasn't it? I could be wrong?
well that was the 1970s
Everyone wanted one
The mail service is a marvelous system. I know, because I was a carrier in the U.S.A.!
Family are still waiting on postcards from Rome sent to Australia sent in 1987
What's the rush?
Last year we had in France a letter that took 45 years to be found.
That the lazy French for you.@
I’ve got em
Doubt it. Post men only used to nick birthday cards hoping they had cash in them. @@wollywotsit

Thanks Thames TV I enjoyed that .
Splendid
Ahhh before privatisation and email.
5.32 Bloke has world’s best train set.
or 39:36 😄
A great vid with a nice bit of HST thrash at the end! The BR BRUTE trolley, very handy for dossing on as a kid, watching the trains go by....The name is an acronym-Britsh Rail Universal Trolley Equipment. These replaced the variety of such trolleys that had been in use by the pre Britsh Railways private companies....
Great clip. I did the Mail Rail tour last year. Fascinating.
Spent some time sitting at those key boards, after a couple of hours they had a rather hypnotic effect on me falling asleep, loved the 80,s with our F. TROOP.
REGGIEOOOOHHH.
My Father was a postman to but not in UK, he work for sixteen years in the city of Porto Portugal.Good posting thanks
This is... brilliant!
Haven't seen that intro for decades. Jeez!
Loved Magpie when I was a kid any chance of a full episode?
Magpie was fab. Easily the best of the children’s “magazine” programmes.
i know it's kinda randomly asking but does anyone know a good site to watch newly released tv shows online ?
@Ty Reign Flixportal :P
@Felipe Bishop Thanks, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D I appreciate it !!
@Ty Reign You are welcome =)
The viva van (HA110) the post office, & BT certainly kept vauxhall going back in the day!
Yep, same with BT keeping the ancient Commer van alive!
@@SuperOldShows yeah what awful vans to drive .
Jenny's voice is lovely
It was still like that at the sorting office when I worked for Royal Mail in 1986/7. This brings back memories. Most posties couldn’t wait to get out of the sorting office and onto walks delivering the mail.
Jenny Hanley was so gorgeous. As a kid I remember her on Magpie and had the hots for her.
Me too!!, and I got to be on an episode of Magpie, and met and talked to her, and told her she was very pretty, it was obvious I had a crush on her, and she was so nice, I got a signed photo, also met the rest of the team, it was the episode about the Wurlitzer Organ , and yes I still have the signed photo!.
Anorak and snail mail lover heaven....
I drove one of those a few times, then a Morris Marina..... and the flees you got off the bags...
this is the po i remember in leicester and working the alf and segs machine
Wonderful.
I worked at Royal Mail just a few years ago while at university. Nothing much as changed in terms of the sorting process, exactly the same.
Wow! That underground network was amazing! I'm really impressed!
You can ride on the train now at the Postal Museum.
Well . That looks like my old stamping ground .
I live right behind Mount Pleasant - 6 acres at the back of it are currently being transformed into apartments. The dust is driving me mad...!
The 'Mail Rail' is now some sort of ride-on tourist attraction. You enter on Phoenix Pl.
Liverpool’s sorting office would of been full of giros .
bet you cant even call it "male" anymore!! fantastic
I love those Thames credits, when life was soooo much better
@@svarga1 those were better days for many; even those of us in primary school.
Jenny Hanley.....many a school boy's dream!
Fascinating...I was banned from watching ITV when I was younger....
6:12 There are is still a sign about 'brutes' visible at Paddington Station.
How time have definitely changed for the worse .
Not really, they wouldn't have though that 40 years later we'd make that whole system redundant and be able to send mail electronically !
I love working at mount pleasant
I worked at mount Pleasant and saw myself in this upload " WHEN I HAD HAIR " LOL
You can today go on a little ride on the little train. Choo choo
Jenny Hanley..growl.. as an adolescent child she was my wet dream goddess..to this day she can still make this 53 year old bratwurst defy gravity...😍😍😍
And I bet she had a really hairy motte too!
70s fur burger! Awesome!
@@MrRadiorobot with a fanny like a rats ear...
Looked an awful mundane job in that sorting office. Don't think I could do it 😳😳
Not much different to a 'beep' supermarket checkout job
I’d have loved to do a public sector job back in those days
All those giros 😍
Love Jenny Hanley's big grey cardi.
That timestamp is in a cool font for timestamps.
Internet, email and facebook greetings for Xmas....the postal industry is dying.
Who still thinks computerisation and privatisation don’t destroy jobs?
She looks warm
Fascinating. Has the system been modernized or replaced?
@TheRenaissanceman65 :(
The mail train sounds a great idea. Why get rid of it? I know they still have freight trains, but far fewer of them now.
They do it all now with a laptop
strange to think this type of post is almost obsolete. What is left will be dealt with by robots. how times have changed..
You don't know what your talking about.
No wonder stamp's are expensive
Bong Girl Jenny Hanley
The underground system (4:30) is something the American postal system doesn’t have!
Nor does the UK, it closed in 2003.
@@szymongorczynski7621 thanks for the update.
@@McIntyreBible So much for reducing CO2 emissions! They hardly use trains for the long distance transport too, most of it goes by road and air.
no parcels in 1979
I have not had any mail for over 1.month they will not deliver to my complex in stretford Manchester. They are short staffed so they are delivering to houses & flats & care Holmes but not the complexes. Ah Well i posted all my Christmas cards today. They should arrive by christmas. Hopefully i will receive my mail by christmas. Just saying.
The post office railway is now part of the Postal Museum and you can go for a ride on the trains, look at "mail rail".
Is that Jenny Hanley?
Royal mail destroyed by privatisation and Greed 😢
Wow ,I forgot this female presenter,as a teen I always want to give her one 😂🤦♂️
I was 9 months old in December 1979
It didn’t show the special room where the postmen play football with parcels labelled fragile
That's now handled by the FedEx and UPS drones here in the States. They are the new masters of damaged goods.
Royal Mail have a really bad attitude delivering Amazon products cos they're so used to just carrying envelopes. I don't put up with any of their cheek at the door. Bstrds. IF YOU DON'T LIKE DELIVERING AMAZON PRODUCTS PISS OFF.💣⚰️
Actually Royal Mail deliver a LOT of non-Amazon parcels, have done for many years, it's the main part of their business now
Royal mail is dying
Why go to mount pleasant sorting office when she was at Saint Pauls the mail from that box went to KEB EC office i should know I opened that box hundreds of times during the 80’s & 90’s 😊😊
