The 2019 megatin promos are the first things that come to mind. Dark Ruler, Dimension Shifter, and Nibiru all changed the format a LOT. Nibiru stopped many combo decks (Danger Thunder, Lunalight Orcust etc) in their tracks (and obliterated Salamangreat). Dark Ruler was able to help players beat the combo decks that didn’t lose to Nibiru. Dimension Shifter didn’t see widespread play on release: Madolche played it, some builds of Thunder Dragon played it, and sometimes pendulum players would run it. Although it didn’t fit many decks, it absolutely slaughtered the whole metagame (as it still does today).
Worth mentioning Gren Maju played D Shifter too
Lunalight Orcust summoned Azatoth 5th summon.
Bascially felt like every card was for one deck. Dark ruler for Thunder, Nib for salad and shifter for orcust.

I'm surprised El Shaddoll Winda wasn't mentioned in the video. It was the perfect counter to the previous HAT format cards.

Winda is still really good to this day. It doesn't do well against the Adventure engine, but it's insane against Swordsoul
That's because Winda wasn't the card that was broken coming out of Duelist Alliance, it was El Shaddoll Construct and Shaddoll Fusion. This is kind of difficult to understand if you're new and only knew Shaddoll from its IDS days but Winda was not the card that made that deck crazy at the time.
This is also really really obviously apparent when one of the best Shaddoll variants played Moralltach.
There was also the flip side of this, where every single deck that came after was given a way to out Winda. Satellarknight Rigel specifically exists because it's a 2400 normal summon. Qlis had Carrier which could just bounce it. Baby Apelio can boost itself to 2300. Every single Nekroz monster worth summoning could run over it. The list goes on.
I remember seeing a more recent display of using instant fusion to cheat out winda and previously set up dingirisu to end phase protect winda from going kaboom -.0
That "100 more ATK" thing is pretty common among answer cards, because not being able to beat over the answer or trade with it is pretty important!
not saying I didnt enjoy the other twitter videos but this one might be my favorite from the subject alone, ive always found the idea of targeted hate cards to be interesting and kinda funny because you can just _feel_ konami's annoyance with the metagame when you read their effects lol
Rush duel player here, I'm gonna examplify this video to the extreme: our format has no rotation and no banlist to this day and it's been months and months that the meta is a spam of special summons of level 7, 2500 ATK normal monsters from the graveyard. So Konami used around 10 slots in the last core set to print cards with effects specifically targeted at level 7 normals. You got a boss floodgate that prevents special summons from the graveyard, a small guy that shuffle level 7s from the GY into the deck, a boss that kills up to 2 normal monsters on the field... And despite all these counter cards, it's still unclear if that will be enough to shift the meta.
There is western competitive rush duels community? Thats great to hear hopefully you get the game here soon
@@eldavid8774 I mean, we play on Edopro and we see the format evolve through the results of OCG tournaments. But yeah, still hoping that Rush Duels come to the TCG for real at some point. It's weird that it's currently getting a dub of SEVENS with no product to sell alongside it.
Oh it started even earlier than that: when Dark Revelation was used in practically every deck the response was with Maximum Monsters where the majority of them had a passive effect that prevented destruction by Traps, then a bit later we got all those Spells and Monster effects that can prevent Trap destruction too. When Monster Reborn started becoming used in nearly every deck they compromised by making cards that do Reborn's job but better in some situations: Parallel Birth Gate and Secret Orders, which also had the benefit of massively buffing Normal Monsters to be Top tier threats and stop the game being dominated by Victory Flag and Thunderbold Psychics-even turning Red-Eyes Burn from a psuedo gimmick into a legit threat.
Don't underestimate G.B. Hunter!
Back in probably 2010, I was running glads in a locals and was playing this guy. I take game 1 so we side and go to game 2. He starts. T sets, passes. My first move of the game is special cydra, he flips SOLEMN JUDGMENT. Pays half his life, I am mystified. I do the only thing next a glad deck can do: normal laq or besti or whatever, attack set monster. He reveals G.B. Hunter.
Making it a 2K defense is brilliantly designed. Like a magnet, the glads are going to attack this thing because what else are they going to do? And def position monsters are supposed to be safe for glads to always have an attack avenue so they will go after G.B. Hunter if you set it. No normal summonable glad natively gets over it and the engine is shut down. Keep in mind you can't summon Gyzarus because contact fusion returns materials to the deck. The glads just stand there and hang out with this thing lol. There may have been better side options against glads but the effort behind the card design is definitely there.

Still hilarious to find out one of my first ever yugioh cards only exists to counter glad beasts.
I think a fun idea for one of these would be "Cards released after their time" like stuff that could conceivably be really good in an older meta but they got released way too late and now are worthless. Obvious examples are d/d/d and Chronomoly who's messed up releases cut any meta relevance they could of had short. Other examples would be stuff like Jelly Cannon or Guardragon Cataclysm

“Expendable Dai” is a trap released in 2020 that lets you tribute a warrior, to destroy any card and then draw 1.
So it’s basically fish dept charge from 2011
People have tried to break Fish Dept Charge since released until it got powercrept around post Nekroz, when such simple removal cards were going out of fashion.
The consensus is that the only thing holding it back, was a lack of good fish.
A similar card “Gemini Spark” and “A hero returns” saw play and almost solely defined Heros with their self replacing draws until post Duelist Alliance format.
There is no doubt that Expendable Dai would have seen major competitive play in any warrior deck, if released before Nekroz format
8:58 something you forgot to mention on Ignister is that you target *a* pendulum card to destroy in order to activate it. Not yours. So not only did it vaporize Kozmo ships and stop BA floating, but in the mirror it also just let you pop an opponent’s pendulum scale to shuffle back their other one. Very cool
Speaking of Dingirsu. Madolche Teacher Glassouffle was also released in the same set as that card. It was an xyz monster who’s effects were specifically designed to COUNTER Orcust on release! 1st effect made Dingirsu removal completely useless while the 2nd effect also countered Orcust’s entire gimmick. Unfortunately Sky striker Orcust was a thing and the deck was too fast for Madolche to keep up!

Regarding Borreload Dragon... I don't think the fact that its attack reduction effect can't be responded to by the opponent is necessarily to counter Crystal Wing in particular. I think Borreload can't be responded to so that you can target *your own Rokket monsters with Link effects* and proc their effects to destroy themselves and cause x to occur on your opponent's turn so they can act as disruption. If your opponent cannot respond to Borreload's targeting effect, then only you can respond to Borreload's targeting effect. Remember that the "Borrel" monsters are the boss monsters of the "Rokket" archetype.
I mean, either way that extra condition on the attack reduction still worked against Crystal Wing perfectly. Most likely a happy coincidence, though.
To top off, they made it unrespondable by the opponent cuz Rokkets all can miss timing

Technically, Crimson Blader was around for a very long time in the OCG before the TCG got it. It was really designed against other Synchro decks.
I actually really like when Konami does this. It's sort of like a "Due to the recent tragedy that was (insert format here) Konami would like you all to know that they have taken steps to ensure that something like this never happens again. We thank you all for your patience and hope you enjoy the upcoming format"
Not to mention the cards are usually good in general and come into play in other formats so yeah relevant niche support is always welcome

@@AndyBrixton999 honestly I think it’s really smart. Printing cards that counter the stuff in the current format is a good way to slow down powercreep while still shifting the metagame. They don’t have to constantly have stronger and cards being printed, they just have to be able to beat the current decks.

You are literally praising Dark Dragoon for being usable outside of dark magician and red eyes. That card was cancer for what felt like a LONG while.
Even GIGANTIC SPLIGHT if you really think about it, technically is like targeted hate towards Nibiru the Primal Being. Why would the effect restriction affect EACH PLAYER and not just YOU, the person activating that effect? XD It prevents non Level/Rank/Link 2 monsters from being Special Summoned for the rest of the turn (after Special Summoning a Level 2 monster from your Deck)
Not really a meta counter, it stops nib but nib is not a deck. Just a broken archetype and card

Artemite Slay is crazy in Flunder. you can send the extra deck cards that net you resources. Other decks can do it too, but Flunder has consistency issues that this card helps with

I always thought it was a parallel for Avramax (untargetable) that mostly came out using IP (indestructible). Then Avramax would spin Dingirsu (only protects from destruction) and force a stalemate. Also LORE!

What I talked about is them still being rivals despite supporting opposing forces (initially in the orcust war), where Dingirsu still has the upper hand (sending Avram to gy) but Avram not giving up (spinning Ding into the ED).

I'm SO GLAD someone brought up Cyber Dragon, the card that is arguably the Ur example of this type of card. Wayyy back in the day, just before post-goat, Zombie decks had become all the rage thanks to the power of Pyramid Turtle and Vampire Lord. One of my friends was a highly competitive player who played Zombies, and I was a huge nerd who played all the video games and researched upcoming cards. When I found out about Cyber Dragon I dropped everything to make a machine deck to play them. My friend got his first helping of Cyber Dragon that day, and after nearly 20 games together he looked me right in the eyes and said "I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to do about Cyber Dragon. My deck literally has no answer to it."
And thus, a trope was born!
I was basically your friend in the timeline he started playing outs because I saw cyber dragon comeout and started playing monster removal up the ass along with mobius so I could use my rat and turtlr targets for tribute fodder for it or ryu kokki

Buster Blader got Destruction Swords to specifically combat the top tier meta at the time of their release and even shared it's type with the deck it countered. Robot Buster for Qli, Wizard Buster for Shaddolls ect...
The borrels are spell speed 4 to prevent the opponent from chain blocking your rokkets

The best part about Blue Eyes spirit dragon is during that time I played blue eyes and faced a pendulum deck once, it really worked

While Borrelload is a hard counter to Crystal Wing, you can’t really say that it was printed exclusively to counter it, especially regarding the date it came out. CIBR was released in October of 2017, the D/D structure was released in January of 2017 and had already been hard rotated out of the format sheerly by the existence of Zoodiac in February, and there was a whole 6 months of Zoo and Draco format between the D/D structure and Borrelload’s release, by which point, Master Rule 4 came into effect, slaughtering D/D’s end board, forcing it, and by extension Crystal Wing, out of the format entirely, with the exception of those crazy enough to still be on Invoked WindWitch. By the time Borrelload was even revealed, Crystal Wing was a complete irrelevance.

Dark Law is STILL one of my favorite cards, even today if I can run him in a deck with darks and mask change 2 into him im gonna, hell I do in my Tearalament deck because you can make him with any of the main deck dark tears or the lvl 5 fusion to also mill 5. Optimal, no, but hilarious in a Tearalament mirror when you have a 1 sided macro

How did nobody mention the mere existence of Link Monsters? They were originally weak but easy to make to reduce Extra Deck play just in general. MR4 required ALL Extra Deck monsters to be linked, not just Links and Pendulums.
Probably no one wants to remember those dark times.
My theory was that Zoodiacs were a test run for links, with the idea being to see how good things like Link-1 could be. Afterwards, for a while, they decided to modernize archetypes by theoretically making everything as consistent as Zoodiacs by giving every archetype they thought needed a boost a link monster.

I wouldn't say Borrelload was meant to counter Crystal Wing. It's effect being unable to be responded to was more to push the Rokket's effects so he himself can be safe. (They have to dodge the bullet and can't disarming the gun).

The recursion and swarming they have while having high beatsticks, negates and a good amount of destructions are all great.
Pure Dogmatika just sadly has an absolutely dogshit turn 1 because they need a very specific set of cards in hand to end on something decent at all.
The newest set of support cards (White Relic, Dogmatikaturgy, etc.) helped a lot with that, but their first turn is still pretty bad.
8:11 Theory: This irresponsiveness, a feature of all Link-4 or higher Borrel monsters, is supposed to synergise with the main deck Rokket monsters that can self-destruct for some benefit when targeted for the effect of a Link monster.
It resembles the usage of firearms: the Borrel dragons are guns and the Rokkets are their ammunition (presumably their archetypal theme in the manga/anime).
Preventing responses to the "weapons" being loaded and fired off is a bit of fan service for everyone who liked that combo in the story.

Lunalight had monsters that countered Kosmos. Leo Dancer was a 3500 atk beatstick that had targeting and destruction protection, so none of their cards could get over it. It can also be argued that that the way Cat/Panther function with their attacks was a way to counter their floating effects
Crimson Blader came out the set after Dragon Rulers did (although I could be wrong about the timing of it's release, but I'm pretty sure I have it right), and did absolutely nothing to stop them, although that was what it was designed to do.

So the Thing about Borrelload and All the Borrel Links is their relation to Rokkets, an archetype of Modern yugiog that are "WHEN.... You can effects. So activate a link effect targeting your rockets, opponent chains MST to stop your Rokket from chaining
well you see when we talk about targeted deck types and Konami intervention, we cannot forget about master rule 4.
I think the reason that Borreloads targeting effect can’t be responded to is because it was meant to work with Rokkets, whose whole gimmick is having their monster be targeted by the effect is a link monster, so it gave the deck a way to ensure their Rokket could be targeted

You joke but not only do i hate how much faster the game has become in the last decade but i actually miss trap cards.
Now its mostly monster effects and some spell that searches.
trap cards not only slowed the game but made you scared of summoning or going to the battle phase...
I feel like Lyrilusc Bird Call was a pretty pushed card (for Lyriluscs specifically) either add or send a lyrilusc from deck to hand or graveyard, and an optional special summon another one from the hand, though it does have a huge Ash target on its back 😂 (I’ve had my Bird Calls Ash’d so many times on md it’s hilarious) then I’d follow up with “oh no, anyway” and proceed to special summon a billion smol birds

Ghost Sister and Spooky Dogwood was released not long after Danger Dark World FTK got hit.
I feel like floowandereeze was made specifically to beat tri-brigade. Empen says no to link monsters and you can not beat over it. Their best removal is banishing with shuirag, floow really doesn’t care about having their cards banished. They can play shifter to just stop them completely plus stri and snowl to prevent them from making links in the first place.

Meanwhile exosister ended up actually flopping against Tear because the tcg department provided a super poly target to absolutely destroy a sister board.

8:13, every Rokket monster has a "when" condition on their trigger effects so I'm inclined Konami really didn't want these things chainblocked so they made every single borrel link unable to be responded.
