    I'm a cubase user and in last 3 years owned mpc live & mc707, Elektrons sp404a etc and love them all. But this so much closer to what i envisaged. The vocal tracks over segments has limitations (12mins mono), but coupled with zen beats gui is simply game changer. I'm saving up for one. I wont sell the others they're all good at different things. But very impressed Roland.

    Thankyou for putting together. Really enjoyed the different approaches and the energy. I hope that this little box gets some love. to me its a nintendo switch compared to PS5. no 4k60fps but a lot more portable and fun and about the gameplay rather than the graphics. the zenbeats app is so slick.... really supports fast working / arrangement....but I could use some tips.... my transitions between sections / sequences feel like a person lurching from lifebelt to lifebelt in rough sea and getting the timing and levels of vocal clips against the music takes quite a bit of practice, also maybe expand on the collaborative side of it?

    • @cooloutbeats
      @cooloutbeats  Před 3 lety

      From what I understand, Zenbeats is remotely controlling the Verselab to give it a graphical front end, so the MV audio isn't actually being routed through or processed by Zenbeats at this point. That may change as they add more features to the integration.

      @@cooloutbeats Thx, noticed that on the explanation, however I also saw "track stem bouncing" not sure what it means, is it bouncing tracks from ZenBeats as MV-1's loops or the other way ? or both ? If it's the MV-1 to ZenBeats way, I assume it would also mean each track available separately in generic mode.
      kinda of a bummer as far as I'm concerned the way generic mode is implemented right now.

    • @cooloutbeats
      @cooloutbeats  Před 3 lety +1

      @@jayneural There's a whole list of different features on the Zenbeats roadmap. They'll roll out incrementally. With that said, my personal opinion is the Verselab works great as a standalone box as it's designed to do the whole song production from start to finish. Everything else is just a bonus really. I have plenty of iOS devices, all the popular apps, desktop plugins, etc., but don't really feel the need to transfer my Verselab tracks over to another DAW. It's more fun to see what I can do with one device since there's so much already inside.

    • @jayneural

      @@cooloutbeats It's true that the VL1 is stunningly capable cover the whole workflow, including vocals and mastering. That's quite impressive and gets me really thinking after I paid over $1K for an M+. I'm getting snubbed on NI forums when I'm begging for auto-pitch/vocoder type of features :)
      I love Roland's sounds and own many products from the brand. So I'd probably use it as a multi-timbral rompler part of a setup in addition to standalone beat-making tool, to bring it in setups with analog synths or some of other excellent iOS apps (AUM with along with AuV3 synths/FX).
      Hopefully multi-track generic USB audio will come with a future firmware. It would be even more welcome on Roland's other synths and drum-boxes which are less of do-it-all devices.
      At least there aren't limits I'm aware of on the USB Class Compliant standard disallowing them to do that. They made moves in that direction for the MC 101/707 recent firmware updates, so let's see.
      As for ZenBeats integration, that's killer, kinda compensates for the small built-in screen and hence lack of visual feedback.
      Would be nice if they implemented a waveform view on ZenBeats when sampling/trimming/slicing on the VL1.

    • @cooloutbeats
      @cooloutbeats  Před 3 lety +3

      As far as user-friendly, I don't think any gear has developed a system as easily laid out as the Verselab's workflow strip. I'm not an MPC One owner (although I have some older MPCs). From what I've seen the MPC One and Verselab are very different machines. Different feature sets, uses, and strengths. MPCs in general are designed to be a hub for connecting multiple hardware. A lot features and complexity comes with that. The Verselab is designed to be an all-in-one song production studio. It guides you step-by-step from idea to finished song including the vocals with no other gear needed (aside from a microphone and headphones of course). Ultimately, it dependa on your setup and what you want to do. The Verselab isn't designed for jamming with tons of other gesr, designing synth patches/sample libraries all day, or live performance...it's there to finish songs as easily and quickly as possible.

    How do you find the sample start and end point editing experience in the Verselab? I've heard from other users it's not the best, do you think they will address it in firmware update?

    • @cresshead
      @cresshead Před 3 lety

      there's different scales on moving thru a sample with the knobs for small to large resolutions via shifted key strokes/modes - see the manual on their website for details

      @@yepuh8828 if you are looking for a fully fledged sampler with great workflow you're looking at the wrong product... much like looking at the mpc live as a fully fledged synthesiser is also the wrong product. verselab is a fanstactic groovebox with a great synth engine that can also do some sampling.. it's not a 'sampler' first and foremost.

    Is there an 'Undo' feature?

    • @cooloutbeats
      @cooloutbeats  Před 2 lety +1

      There’s no undo. My workflow is to make a copy every time i’m satisfied, but want to try changes or move to the next step in the workflow strip. When sequencing you have 16 clip slots. It’s easy to do the copy shortcut (copy button + a pad) to make a little backup of the clip. Then if you mess up, copy it back over the same way. Basically a human undo. I also make sure to save numbered versions of a project as I move across the workflow strip, so ‘songname 1’ will be the sequences, ‘songname 2’ will be the sequences plus song arrangement, ‘songname 3’ will be with vocals added…and on and on. It’s also smart to backup up the SD card to a computer every now and then.

    The output gain is terrible on the MV. You can have the volume maxed out and then have the preamp cranked and its still low. POS.

    • @cooloutbeats
      @cooloutbeats  Před 3 lety +1

      What mics are you using? Did you check your cables? I've tested a variety of mics with the Verselab: dynamics like a SM58, tube large condensers using phantom, small solid-state pencil mics, even a measurement mic. They all sounded fine. No issues at all with the pre-amps over here.

      @@acethemcacethemc1491 Check your gain staging. Since the Verselab is designed to be a standalone recorder (not just a sound module), there's a bunch of different gain/volume parameters at each stage of the workflow to maintain headroom (so things don't clip). There are separate volume levels per Tone, per Clip, per Track, then a master level per song (edit + song), plus gains in the multi-band compressor and final limiter. All this happens before the volume pot and none are at maximum by default.
