      I’d love to have him with me if I didn’t have to climb under/over lines, up/down steep hills, and through thick brush!! But he will check some pump houses with me!

    I love the sound of the creek in the closing shot.
    It reminds me of when my family lived in Kentucky.
    There was a stone bench that the driveway crossed. There was a creek that flowed over that bench. It had about a foot high drop at the east end of the bench. We had a foot bridge there also. I would go sit on the foot bridge and listen to the creek for hours.
    You could also hike along the creek and find gravel bars and find pools that had their own sound also.

    You are right; when to tap is never an easy decision. You always want to capture your historically best run period for you sugar bush with out missing the first run. From what I understand, in a vacuum system the tap holes stay viable for up to 8 weeks while in a gravity system it is more like 4-6 weeks. And for buckets and bags 4 weeks tops.

    I was taught sap, like water, is just a bit over 8 pounds per gallon. Sap is 98% water plus some sugar and minerals.

    Great to see your tapping I’m from Pennsylvania mountain man, Maple syrup and I’m tapped in since the beginning of January I only have 200 taps and got over 1000 gallons of sap for me. The sugar content is one and a half percent down here in Pennsylvania and got 14 gallons of syrup out of 1000 gallons, my season will end the beginning of March

    Hi Nikki, I am tapping some trees in my backyard with plastic drop line taps I purchased online. These taps require only a .25 inch hole instead of the 7/16 hole that my metal taps from last year required. I thought the smaller hole would be less trauma for the tree. Although the plastic taps work, they seem to leak a bit too much down the side of the tree. I tend to think it’s cheap taps, rather than my technique😊. Your advice on this would be appreciated. But I would like to know more about the taps you use, and if they can be purchased online maybe amazon. thanks. btw, my operation is only 5 trees, but last year (my first year tapping) I generated almost 4L of syrup, enough to last the whole year.

    • @adamwhite9854
      @adamwhite9854 Před 6 měsíci +1

      I found a solution to the leaking problem. I wrap several layers of teflon plumbers tape around the top of the tap before hammering it into the tree. This not only stopped the leak , but improved sap recovery as well.

    Hi Nikki, I'm curious how many taps Boxler Maple operates? I know you pull your drops every season so that's a great way to count. I always have the folks on my crew counting with ranger beads and get counts for each mainline. Were just over half tapped with about 15000 taps in ATM.

  • @gavinperry7237

    Can you get the same flavor from soft maple

    • @grega2362
      @grega2362 Před 6 měsíci

      Yep, you can tap reds and silvers, its all maple syrup. The difference is that suger maples have more sugar in the sap and you need less sap per gallon. I do all reds and its about 54 gal sap to 1 syurp.

  • @cbak1819

    Hi! thanks for all the insider info.. I tapped first time, it's flowing really good, 2/20/24. I may not want all the sap it's producing , no place to store it until boiling . Ii had mo clue it would produce so much so fast. i have leaking around tap sight. Live and learn. I was told to drill upward on slight angle. I'm using tubbing. Anything I can do to correct? or can I just leave it? I am getting 5 quarts per day🎉 Temps at night going above 35* so I'm thinking it will slow significantly. Thanks.
