Extreme Freight Trains on Montana's Mullan Pass

- Presented in 4K - 45 minutes of heavy freight train action on the Mullan Pass, in Central Montana. The Montana Rail Link was recently bought out of the BNSF, but the trains and scenery are still mostly unchanged! Located on the 3rd Subdivision, the steep 2.2% grades provide some of the finest and toughest railroading around.
You'll also see some of the various MRL/BNSF helper sets, that are staged at the bottom of the pass, in nearby Helena, MT. These helper sets are manned, and mainly attached to Westbound trains who need assistance going up the pass.

Holy cow. That MRL patriotic unit is so dirty now that you can barely tell what it even is! Glad I visited MRL multiple times over the years before BNSF decided to take it back over.
Stock (share) holders, my friend. Looks take a back seat.
I noticed too, since BNSF took over MRL, they no longer keep those EMD's clean, like the Washington group used to.
Looks so peaceful to film trains at
Great to see they have some MACs in service again
I lived in Helena from 1988 to 1992. My wife worked and I would just hop on these grain trains going over Mullen pass and ride them to the top where they would cut out the helpers and the Helpers would usually give me a ride back to Helena. This was when I was in my 20's and had no kids. those were the good ol' days....
A small correction; the BNSF sought to end the lease to MRL early. The money exchanged was to terminate the lease. The track has always been BNSF via the Northern Pacific.
Excellent Images and Locations. Look forward to another adventure. Thanks Michael !
That's a great spot to shoot Skyline Trestle Michael! I was there in 2015 and spent 3 days on the Pass, but trains were few and far between, but still a great place ! Nothing like this down here in Australia??
Cheers Gregg.
Very nice - very great video! I am a Rail-Fan from Vienna, Austria. I love the US-Railways. And all those great Video-Makers of it! Thank you!
Excellent video.
Mountain railroading at its finest. Units in Run 8 up front, units in Run 8 in the swing, and a unit in run 8 at the rear. Someone please forward this video to the suits in Omaha and let them know Tennessee Pass is waiting for its return call.
Awesome catches! MRL was a great railroad helping heavy unit trains up the steep grades
Bellissimo video le pendenze devono essere molto forti ho venduto un treno che aveva nove locomotore bellissime le riprese su quel ponte in curva con lye varie incuadratura
2.2 percent on some of that pass.
I miss June, July and August in Montana. The rest of the year, not so much.
Same here. I was raised in Livingston, and would never go back. Besides, Hollywood pretty much took the area over, and prices are getting astronomical. Then Helena for a few. Southern Ore isn't much better.
Excellent Train Videos
Amazing shots as always!

Thanks Damien, hope you're doing good.
@@Michaellovestrains No problem, and I'm doing great, hope you are as well!

Great catches there man, you had some great shots throughout!
Ahhh, Scott Hiddelston territory. He mostly quit posting, it seems. I lived there for 7 years, but never went up to the pass area. My bad.
So sad how much BN’s changed our railroad in the last 7 months. I miss having the 4400’s in our helpers in Livingston. The MAC’s are okay but 2 ACe’s and a 40 did better than them on the rear of a heavy.
Incredible video!
Great pictures and landscape. Thank you very much. One question: Is there a general speed limit on the Mullon Pass? It looks like coupled locomotives without cars don't go any faster than freight trains with 200+ cars.
Nice Catch
great video michael loves trains
Nice video Michael :)
Another breaking it friend awesome captures🚂🔝🫵🏼
O ronco dos motores das locomotivas laranja são muito mais bonitos
Where did the SD70ACe with numbers 4316, 4317, 4318 and 4319? Usually they were actively working until the road to BNSF passed. And the MRL locomotives are somehow dirty, this has never happened before. Sadly.
The 4300s work bnsf road service across the system now bc they can’t lead due to having thunder cabs
oh yeah great video
Sweet video Mike! I got to know what you use to film. I will indeed need to get it.
Show
Ah yes, "light power"
Isso aí é uma serra ? Onde fica ?
Does passenger trains run on these tracks?
Not for years. Just the northern route. The old Great Northern.
They ought to have Warren buffet clean that mrl patriotic unit it's disgraceful the way it is
wonder how much it costs to attach a loco with DPU on it, so they can run the MRL locos without a conductor and engineer. don't see the economics behind it.
