- This video is all about the quirks and features of this 1996 Cadillac Fleetwood Limousine. It is a six door Fleetwood which was stretched by Superior in Lima Ohio. I took a lot of inspiration for the style of this video from Doug Demuro. A huge thank you goes out to my family for helping me make this video as professional as possible. Enjoy!

I love this young man's enthusiasm for the cars he reviews, reminds me of myself back in the day. Having owned some of these autos, I'm intimately familiar with them and associate these beasts with many happy memories experienced while either riding or driving them.

My first GenX response is to roll my eyes at this young dude gushing over what I see as just another late-model Caddy. Then I think: if CZcams existed when I was 20, and I was gushing over a 1962 Caddy limo, there'd be a bunch of boomers rolling their eyes at me, too. Thanks, James, for letting me see these grand old Fleetwoods with younger eyes.

James I like that you are so positive about Cadillac So many people trash Cadillac after refusing to honor their warranty’s my favorite Cadillac was the Cadillac Brougham from the 80’s and 90’s had several. Sad to see them go! End of an era
Eric Kennedy Thank you very much Eric!! I’ve just grown to love these Cadillacs for what they are and it sure makes it hard to be anything but positive about them haha. There is just nothing like them! And I am a huge fan of those broughams, I think the 93-96 Broughams are one of the BEST looking cadillacs. I just love those Fleetwoods and all of the chrome that they have. Very fantastic cars! I wish they still made more like them...
Place of fuel open and trunk open was characteristic of this American Cars industry era, not only Cadillac.

I agree! White walls would help greatly. My dad and I really like Michelin tires because we like the nice ride they give, but Michelin doesn't make a white wall tire anymore (which doesn't make sense to me). Although there are some other brands that do make white walls still, we wanted the superior ride with Michelins.
@@JW_Reviews Indeed, I was able to get my white walls from the COKER Company for my Brougham....but yeah they are not Michelins. They are good tires but Michelins are the best no doubt. I got the wider period ones for circa 1990 and they made the Caddy POP....BEAUTIFUL Man. :)
Nice! I'll have to look into COKER tires, I don't think I've heard of them before. But maybe Michelin would bring back the white wall, I would definitely buy from them!
@@JW_Reviews Yes Sir, Cokers can be found on the Internet, not as good as Michelins of course, but a very good tire and a beautiful white wall. :)
This limousine need to change direction of two things, back doors opening direction and middle row seats facing, so passengers in middle and back rows facing each others.
Furthermore, those passengers needed head rest, as u mentioned.

Back in the day, we had CD adapters where you'd pop in a cassette buck to the cassette player with the other end wired into a portal cd player. Most portable CD players had a power cord that you'd plug into the cigarette lighter and you were set.
Huh, I never even thought about there being portable CD players with a cassette adapter. That's awesome! It's amazing how CD's are now old technology lol. Thanks for watching the video!
I own one. Low miles. All white with a special vinyl top that looks like the cloth tops. It is nice too. Powerful and so comfortable to drive.

I have chauffeured a 1996 Fleetwood Brougham limousine with a J-rear seat. It was too long for our towns, but it rode very well.
The antispin system is actually so sensitive, that it is activated through accelleration onto a highway ramp, if your rear tires are new and your front tires are not.
What disappointed me in the interior was the panels on the arm rests with i.e. window switches and ash trays. Black plastic doesn't suit the car and the luxery feel it should give. Same goes for the black panels in the dash board, i.e. for the headlight switch.
15:21 The reason why you don't have head rests for the middle seat, it because it is a "24 hour" limousine, where you can flip the center
seat to face backwards.
06:44 The Crest turn-away for the trunk key Cadillac has had for decades on end.
01:37 Wreath and Crest hood ornament with a spring Cadillac has had since the hood ornaments returned on Eldorados first in 1971.
05:47 There has never been an issue of cars catching on fire because of the fuel filling in the rear. The fuel tank is excellently protected
behind the bumper.
The backup light on this model is another issue. It is too weak. I had the greatest problems navigating a 9 meter limousine with this
backup light.
03:04 Fiber optic indicator controls on the fender and above the rear window started in the 1960's. At least from 1973 they came with all
three colors on the fenders. A brilliant invention that you shall deal with carefully, when you change the headlight bulps.
I agree! White walls would be fantastic. My dad really likes Michelin tires but they unfortunately don't make a white wall tire anymore. Maybe in the future we'll paint the tires white.
Thank you for those informative and very interesting points! A lot of really neat technology with this car. The middle seats unfortunately don't flip in this car, but another Fleetwood Limousine that I rode, which was a 1995, did have the flip seats. I bet they didn't spend the money to make a new style of seat for the cars without that feature. I should have thought to include that in the video!

Great review with plenty of attention to detail and beeeeautiful car! Makes regular size luxury cars europe had to offer like the s class or the 7 series of the time look like compact sedans by comparison. I wish they made this as a diecast model.

Thumbs Up Liked for you. I had a 1974 classic small limo 75 series with a divider window once also. I miss It so much and sad it got totaled in a collision 20 years ago.. It was 24.6 feet long. The car saved my life also. Take care now James.

I remember riding in one with my mom when I was 13, after my aunts’ funeral, the ride was so comfortable, I almost forgot we were riding to the cemetery to bury her 🤐
Aw, I'm glad that you at least got to ride in one of these cars. They do have a fantastic ride!
This type of limo was primarily meant to be a "Family Car" for funerals, which is why it has three forward-facing bench seats and six doors, instead of the usual four doors and extended rear section with two rear-facing seats in a traditional limo.

My dad owns one of these same limousines. Except it's a 1994 model. It was always fun driving it, weather it was on long road trips back and forth between Alabama and Indiana, or just on short drives around his home in AL. One of my favorite things to do when I wasn't driving it, was adjusting the blowers behind the back seats. If you close off some, the others will blow air out harder, so if you wanted to increase the intensity of the ac or heat you were getting, that was a interesting way to do it.
The only thing I really had to complain about it was its transmission. It was fine at first, but it gradually became worse to the point where you'd have turn it over repeatedly over and over until it finally started. Sometimes it would start right up, other times it would take maybe 2 to sometimes even 10 times to get it to work. A few times while we had to stay in hotels on trips, he would leave it running in the parking lot over night so he wouldn't have to go through the trouble of starting it. The rest of us thought it was a terrible idea obviously. Thankfully it never got stolen.
Eventually it got to the point where it was back to driving the other cars we had. We still plan to get the transmission fixed, (along with the AC, peeling vinyl that we held down with duct tape, and anything else for that matter). Right now its parked under our 2nd story balcony next to the garage collecting dust. One day it will be fixed though, and it'll be great to drive it up and down the road again. It's always nice when you get to drive or ride in something that stands out from everything else.

Wow that's really cool! I'm so happy to hear that someone else has had the experience of riding in one of these limousines on road trips and drives. It's the perfect car for that kind of thing! It has plenty of space and it's extremely comfortable. I actually think I noticed that same thing about the blowers. They were extremely powerful too because of the second A/C and heating system in the trunk.
That's strange that it would have trouble starting so often... Maybe the battery ran dry as it sat? We actually had very few issues with our limousine. The engine seemed to always start no matter what and it even got decent gas mileage which is why we used it on so many trips. It was used on many Boy Scout adventures, family trips, and even several weddings. Unfortunately, we had to sell the car late last year. We didn't use it much any more and the family chose to sell it. I do really miss the car. You should someday soon fix up yours because once it's gone you'll certainly miss it too. wow does the rear fan really cool the cabin? because it is in a place that does not seem to be an area that favors passengers a lot and it also seems that the blowers get a lot of sun back there

Had a non limo 1995 Fleetwood, red/tan leather, no vinyl top. Cadillac really knocked it out of the park in terms of styling IMO, car is a whale, big, brash, tons of chrome, no mistaking it for anything other than a Cadillac. Also under the hood, the LT1 V8 made it a hoot to drive, mine had 3.73 gears and some other work(stock cam/heads, never cracked open the motor) Ran a best 13.8 quarter mile, in a 4400lb tank thats longer than a Suburban

I like that it has the electronic instrument digital display. I believe that the horn, there is two horns as that is why they sound powerful. I had to replace one of my horns on my Lincoln Mark 5, but did not get the right tunes as they sounded different.

After looking at the car for awhile, I thought you could turn the two back passenger seats into a bedroom, with the trunk being converted into a kitchen and power source, turning the car into a perfect travel camper car, and no one would be the wiser. Pull up to a beautiful lake or resort and voila, you have your own motel room right there. Saving you a fortune while opening up the entire country as your own personal pleasure playground.
There is certainly enough room in this car to be able to do something like that haha. I've always thought this was the perfect traveling car. Plenty of room, decent gas mileage, and a brilliant ride! Thank you for commenting and for watching the video, Randy

As the owner of Cadillacs for the past 3 decades, I can attest that the headlights only came on when shifted out of park. It is not a "quirk" or mal-function, unless the ones I've owned all had the same glitch.

The daytime running lights are supposed to operate like this, but with the regular headlights and twighlight sentinel automatic headlamp system, when it’s dark the sensor should put the headlights on as soon as you start the car. I think you have the DRLs and regular headlamp systems confused.

The bumper guards "for old people" are after market, probably added by Superior. The hood mounted light indicators were standard on all Cadillacs for many years. And there is no wood trim. It's plastic. But, this old funeral home car is in pretty good shape. The limos that were made for the wealthy had much higher levels of accutroments in the rear. Much higher. Also, the chauffeur's driving area was nicer than in this version. Funeral people want to have a limo that looks expensive, but really isn't.
Interesting, I'd be surprised if the bumper guards are an aftermarket/Superior option. I believe I've seen them on every Fleetwood limousine and regular Fleetwood sedan of that era that I've looked at. And yes, this car is in great shape. Unfortunately someone threw a large rock through one of the windows and scratched up the interior. Not a huge deal, but it added some marks to a once flawless interior. And that's very true! I prefer the old factory limos, these stretches look more truck-like to me. Chrysler made some gorgeous limos in the 50's and 60's and even a dwarf limo later on.
I do like the factory limo's as well. I wish Cadillac still made them! I do like the look of this limousine more than most modern limousines. The lines seem to work better with this model rather than more modern and curvier cars. And Chrysler certainly did make many beautiful cars back then! I am a fan of some of the Imperials. Thank you! I believe this was a funeral home car for some time, but I'm not positive as to where. When my dad purchased it I believe it was from the second owner who bought it from a funeral home (I'll need to double check on that though). We then sold the car to someone in our Cadillac club who actually wanted to use it in his funeral. After he passed and the car was used in the funeral I believe it was sold but not sure who bought it... I'm glad you like the enthusiasm, I definitely enjoy bringing it to the channel 😁

Very nice video. Fun to see the same color interior as my "96 Brougham, but in a limo. Don't know the name of it, but the best imo! & the leather still smells great. Good to see you keeping it in pristine condition as these Fleetwoods are going up in value now, since they were not produced in large numbers and nobody knew they would be the last "real" Cadillacs. As far as the Stereo, I like to use a Bluetooth adapter (Nulaxy fm transmitter) which works very well and then you can listen to anything you want from the smartphone!. One other feature - the 93-96 Fleetwood was designed by Chuck Jordan, who also designed the 59-60 Cadillac. That said, notice the subtle wings along the edges of the trunk lines! I do believe that's a nod to the good old days. Cheers,

I actually didn’t know that a Bluetooth system could be installed like that in these Fleetwoods. And I have not heard of Chuck Jordan before! I have always loved the tail fin look on these cars and the shape of the taillights. I’ll be sure to do some research on him and his work, thank you so much for the information! @5:07 the reason for the top is not for the reason you said. any experienced metal worker would be able to add metal to the roof and grind it down where one would not be able to tell. BUT......
given the length of the car, during turns, etc., the roof would actually flex a little. having a glossy metal roof would show that flexing a great deal. however, the vinyl top with the grains conceals it a lot!!!

Correction, I accidentally referred to this as 76 rather than 96. Also. The top of instrument panel made it almost impossible to clean the inside of windshield.

I'm thinking the guy telling the story had not had knowledge on Cadillac's before hand, the hidden trunk key has been around for year's sense the late 50s, the horns were called trumpet horns 3 horns rather than 2 only in Cadillac other that the Buick roadmaster had these horns! the other interesting thing our 96 when you bent the hood ornament in any direction the horn would blow as to prevent theft of the ornament. The tracktion control was not in all 96 caddy's so in our's if you put the gas pedal to the floor from a stop it would push back the gas pedal so that you could not burn out however if you were going 50 and wanted to pass a car and put it to floor it would lift that baby up and move like a bat out of hell! our guy explaining everything as a quirk is not a quirk it was a great design feature for instance the light in the rearview mirror was a great idea as if a passenger was looking at a map would only shine in their lap as to not distract or blind the driver! sadly the 96 was the last year of the fleetwood rear wheel drive!

Do you know if that feature was standard on the Broughams? And that's very interesting that traction control wasn't on all of the Fleetwoods. Do you know why that is? I thought it was required for safety. And the LT1 sure does make lots of power in these cars, it really is an impressive engine. I realize this is an old video, but I'm curious what kind of mileage you'd get with this? You said you took some long trips and I'm looking at getting one of these but not too sure about the fuel mileage. Thanks.
That's a great question! And don't worry, I try to respond to comments on all my videos, no matter how old. We would usually get about 20-22 mpg on the highway which I always thought was pretty good. I'm not so sure about city mileage, but it probably would be quite a bit worse than highway mileage. Thank you for watching the video, Tim!

The six door limos are very expensive and are more complex to build. I noticed it has no divider was this a funeral limousine or an airport limousine?
They certainly were! This was a funeral home limousine. The funeral home where we bought the car is about 15 minutes away from where I live

Now I know the Buick 225 Electra estate wagon had the same little Fender turn signal indicators and hi beam indicators as the Cadillac but I think you had to buy the high-end version of the electric estate wagon
Yes cause a limousine's only got that type of water pump that huge one that is sticking out from the engine in the front and I think it's made from aluminum judging from its color but that was a oversized water pump to help keep the car cool

Just viewed 76 Series 75 POST. This 76 is a beauty. BUT prefer the older factory built limos. Stretched just don't have the same traditional class. I had 89 Brougham deElegance and 93 Brougham. Unfortunately 93 had issues, worst was premature rust though of rear wheel wells 😫. Unfortunately Cadillac no longer makes anything that interests me. Have beautiful 2007 Town Car Signature Limited. Last of the TRADITIONAL American luxury sedans. Love it, ❤ but NOT the traditional OTT excessive style and class of the past! So sad to see what is now considered to be a luxury vehicle.
👍 You couldn’t give me a Lincoln newer than 2011. Cadillac now is for people who want to appear to have money and say that they drive a Cadddilllaak. Last month I had a XT4 SUV Rental and I’d rather drive my g/f’s ‘18 Rav 4. Was not impressed, seats were not comfortable, suspension was firm and the shifter was dumb. However, it had some balls, handled well at 127 mph and had nice get up and go on the freeway ramps. No lack in power from the Turbo

Ah good question. That button switches the speedometer and tripometer between the Metric System (Kilometers) and the Imperial system (Miles). If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

Didn't G M make Cadillac limousines from the The factory because that would probably be the better one to buy because that 1 will make all 1990 safety standards When you buy a limousine that was stretched by the aftermarket coach builder it probably does not make crash safety standards anymore

I don't know why people call those limousines not a limousine it's a funeral car. Getitright 6 doors is a funeral car a limousine only have four doors in it stretched so now you know it's not a limousine.
I don't believe the term "limousine" is defined as only being used for four door vehicles. I believe it can be applied to cars with almost any number of doors, as long as it is used as a chauffeur vehicle and occasionally with a partition. Thank you for watching the video!
Okay there's a lot of that still have them Fleetwood limousines today but they still got the new ones but they got them Fleetwood brome limousine they have them even the ones in the seventies and some of the 60s the 50s
Okay the cars from the from the 50s 60s up to 76 and around the party 80s when they read them all over again much more bigger into the 90s to the fleetwoods from 90 96 when did discontinue the model didn't put the Elegance replace the Fleetwood in 97 and then it changed to the DeVille all the way into a 2000 add to 2000 and whenever went to that Cadillac XTS and now they're coming to the Fleetwood in 2025
This vehicle is a funeral car and not a limousine. True limos, factory made or stretch car type, never have 6 doors. And in true limos, the second row of seats typically face the third row of seats unless the 2nd row are individual jump seats. This is a funeral car designed to transport 6 to 7 mourners to the cemetery.
That's true, this was designed to be a funeral home limousine. I never heard of there being a distinction in the name depending on the style of the car. Very interesting, I'll keep note of it. Thank you for commenting and for watching the video! 😁
I appreciate your reply, James. Yes, there IS a distinction within the automotive industry between a factory built limousine, stretch car and a funeral car. A true "limousine" is a luxury vehicle manufactured at the factory as opposed to a "stretch car" that was purchased from the manufacturer and then sent to a secondary garage where the vehicle is chopped and an extension is added (typically 12 - 40 inches or more). Regarding cars built in the USA, an ideal example of a factory built limousine is the Cadillac Fleetwood 75 series, manufactured over many decades by General Motors. Finally, a true "limo" typically has a privacy partition that separates the driver's cab from the passenger compartment.
Good to know! I'm glad to learn something new. And I very much like the Fleetwood 75's and how they were built in the factory. They are extremely plush and luxurious cars, especially for the day. I do wish that the Fleetwood Limited's would have been built by Cadillac, that would have made them a true successor to the 75's!

@@JW_Reviews I like the concept as well, but skip the exact phrasing of "quirks and features". Not because it is a trademarked phrase in any way, but because it can only be used ironically outside Doug Demuro, and that joke becomes pretty old pretty fast. The geek aspect is genius in its own way, but you need to find your own expression for it so it just doesn't become a stale copy of someone else's thing.

@@JW_Reviews I think it's inevitable talking about a cars "quirks" especially when we're talking about highly customized cars with a lot of them, it's just the whole expression that is somewhat tainted right now for obvious reasons. But do keep up the work! I watched both your films and thought both of them were highly entertaining. Being a car geek, that's an in depth review of a kind of car one very seldom see out there, and if you can keep up that kind of content I think your subscriptions will rise pretty fast.

Before making them I was disappointed that many other car videos on CZcams didn’t go into depth or show the features of their cars that I wanted to learn so I figured I might as well give it a shot and go into the kind of depth that I would want to see as well as other car geeks. I know how much people enjoy these kinds of videos so I’ll certainly make more! Unfortunately I’ve been off at college and haven’t gotten the chance to make a video yet. I’ve been itching to review our 1976 eldorado convertible next and possibly a 2017 platinum XTS so I hope that everyone will enjoy those as much as I will :)

It definitely did, but Michelin doesn't make a white wall anymore... We really like the ride that Michelin's have so we decided to stick with them

I never liked these types of stretches. 6 doors? Might as well be an old Checker 6 door. The better option was the raised roof similar to what was done for the US Presidential Cadillacs. Easier entry, easier exit, more visibility. Vinyl top to hide welding? Lousy welding finishing practices.
Haha good point. I did see a raised roof 1999 DeVille at the Auburn car auction last year. I did like the higher roof very much because of convenience and space inside the car, but I personally don't like the look that much. I like how long and sleek this Fleetwood looks. Unfortunately a lot of Cadillac's vehicles have lost the magic that they once had... I do see an upturn in quality, though. The Lyriq and Celestiq seem especially promising, I'm excited to see what they have in store for us. Thank you for watching the video!

Overall interesting; however, you appear to have developed a speech mannerism with the word "actually", which you say several times each minute. It was fine at first, but after several minutes it became a distraction on par with the "you know?" craze.
I definitely had a lot more nerves in a lot of my older videos. I've gotten better with it though, you may find some of my newer videos more enjoyable. Thanks for watching the video, John!
