  • We Built this block wall from start to finish in this video. we dug footings then wet set the first row of block into the footing. In this video I demonstrate how to spread mortar and lay block, we built our leads using the nail system to pull strings from. After leads we built the gate area and started on laying up the field area. we got the block wall up to 6 feet high then we grouted the wall with concrete. we then capped the block wall with a 2 inch flat cap which gave it the finishing touch. We cleaned up all our pallets plastic and mortar bags and away we went to the next job.

This is the best demonstration of how to spread mortar for block I have seen on youtube. 👉 6:15

Another great video! I still haven’t done my wall quite yet but hopefully soon. Hey in the wintertime do freezing temps at night factor into laying block and whatnot? For the footing for sure you want to keep it from freezing till it sets, but what about the mortar joints between courses? Are they thin enough they set/ dry up quick enough it’s not an issue? My wall will take a while as I probably will only be able to do occasional weekends and will take me into the winter I reckon (if possible…)

The block does suck the moisture out quite fast, but if it's really wet close to evening I'd cover it with a concrete blanket. If you leave your footing open overnight before you pour, definitely cover it as it will freeze the ground under your footing and it will for sure move if that happens and crack your wall. So cover the open footing, before and after you pour and cover anything thats wet enough to freeze.

Nice work again man! Noticed the footing isn’t below frost. Is that the reason for the tongue and groove block? Does the T&G block allow it to float?

The frost in this area is 10 inches, so it's good, and no t&g wouldn't help it float. Also the grade will be built up 3 or 4 inches because the back yard is low.

Gotcha. Figured with the snow in your other videos the frost line would be deep. Good work, you make it look easy.
