Blowing snow for 15 seasons, avg 124" annually. I regularly hit grease fittings yet never took out shear pins because I never thought it was necessary. Now I realize why it IS... duh! Learned something new, thanks.
Greath job! Just make sure you put the auger in the same position they were prior to the maintenance, not half a turn forward. The grease pin should be both in front.
This was a good catch, and yes you are correct make sure the auger is back in the same position before the shear pin was removed...thanks for the reminder bud
You sound way too happy to be working on that thing. Good work! I will take some tips from you and just sound like I am laughing the entire time I am ready to throw the thing through the wall.
I knew exactly where you are from at the start. Stay warm my NH mate. I just got two ST824's one with a busted gear box, the other just rusty with a bad engine. Swapping parts.
@@HomeOwnerRepair There is a ball bearing that moves back and forth inside the fitting to control flow of grease in or out. When grease comes out upon removal of grease gun it means ball bearing is stuck in the in position. It should be changed. Good maintenance video..
Oh crap, mine is tracked.... Can’t remove easily & chock dont work.... Lately I have been hoisting mine! Flipping it over like a turtle didnt work, tried to start! Good video... Mine doesnt have grease zerks, however after this season I will revmove my auger & add them! Ahhhh you haven’t modified your impeller yet??? You need to go, go , gadget that thing!
Great Vid and never thought to remove the pins so that I could grease and spin each auger on my big Troy Bilt blower. Quick question for you Sir: Just got this Troy-bilt from neighbor at good price and it is a full metal job from about 15 years ago...last of the Tecumseh big flat head engines. Well built but needing a few adjustments and cleaning. I wanted to change and fill the gear lube in the auger gearbox. Should I just remove the fill plug...stand it up on its front snout...let it drain out thru the fill plug hole...then fill with fresh? Do you think that will work?
no need to remove shear pins. may i add, you should remove the wheels and grease the axles. also, under the back pan there is one more grease fitting. lastly, change the oil. (I just did all of the above yesterday, bring on the snow)
@@HomeOwnerRepair you do have a point, I just never have. only blew one shear pin in 18 years. and thats because the paper boy put the sunday paper in the driveway and not the box. i didn't see it under 6 inches of snow.
@@KeepinYouUp07 Nah, if you watch where you go and clean it, it's normal to never break one. Ensure to grease it anyway because when you'll hit something, it will be useful. And if you don't snowblow rocks pavement, you have much less chance to break it.
So....the auger tube doesn't rotate on the shaft because it's locked in position with one (two on mine) sheer pin, but we lube it so...it doesn't rust? I never really got it. And yet there are no grease fittings on the end bearings, the bearings in the gearbox or the bearings on the main shaft, where you actually need grease. Go figure.
It's greased so that when the shear pins DO break, the augers will spin freely on the shaft. If the shaft rusts solidly to the augers, the pins will fail to shear and you risk gearbox damage.
Good job man. After seeing your vid, i looked on my snowblower but it seemed i dont have grease fittings on my auger... Oh well, its a shame they never were installed!
@@terryedmond4492 Based on my first snowblower I got... Your auger should run via the shaft that is connected to the gearbox, all this due to the shear pins/bolts. The grease being what allow the auger to not build rust within the auger "cover" that go around the shaft that run via the gear box. So whent he shear pins/bolts break when you hit something, the grease allow the auger to turn freely without any rust so it don't damage the gearbox.
Your smack on about the preventative maintenance. This is a important part in keeping your 'blower in top notch operation. Aside from the auger many owners do not grease the wheel shafts, chute angle, drive levers, etc. Just takes about 1 -2 hours max every fall, and also during the winter usage to maintain. I do a complete oil change every fall, and calculate the used hours during winter and change the oil again,as these engines are under duress. Oh and maintain proper air pressure in both tires.
NiteGambler i have a 26" craftsman it has 2 zerck fittings on auger should i use lithium grease for the auger? also what is the correct way to grease wheel shafts ? I don't see any other fittings
That made me LOL. Glad he does have safety in mind though. I see too many people on CZcams doing dangerous things. Like using their finger as a pointer near live electrical lugs in a panel as an example.
This video is very helpful as I’m a late bloomer to mower/blower/mc maintenance. Sick of paying others do do the dirty work and trying to get the confidence to do more myself. I also live in NH. I have a similar blower except with treads. Do you have any videos on lubricating chain? Thanks!
Everyone goes to extreme measures to prevent the engine from somehow self starting, I'm all for safty first but in my entire life Never have I ever Seen it, heard about it or been told about it happening to anyone anywhere. Not on a small engine device. On a heavily computerized automobile, yes, but they have been know to spontaneously combust as well. I gotta wonder has anyone ever had their small engine machine just fire up on it's own?
Why do you remove the shear bolt? You only did half the job as you didn’t do the other side, or do you need to as doing one side lubes the other side too. Thanks for the safety tips.

It's an automotive grade bearing grease that you can find at you local auto parts store. If you have the manual see what is recommended in the manufacturer's owner's manual. Hope this helps you out.
I use Lucas Oil Marine Grease which only costs about $1 more for a 14 oz tube than heavy duty automotive grease. What about the gear box? It is right there? I was hoping you did that to see what grease you preferred.

I don’t have to do that on my Toro 1128 power max oxe. It has a gear box that takes 80/90 gear oil, that lubricates the entire shaft.

If you just greased it with a grease gun and a little grease is left on the grease fitting, you should be okay.

Lithium grease for the chain or a spray lube in a spray can just a little then make sure your drive plate is clean and the disc drive clean as well.

The older machines have 4 zeros 2 per auger side.
