Slapping while simultaneously playing chords is a style of Stick playing that I recently developed. I call it "Tap Slap". The raw idea was inspired by a Russian Stick player named Boris Bazurov who sometimes uses 9 to 10 fingers on the neck for percussive effects (Boris is a really innovative musician, check out his videos). I combined his idea with 1970's slap bass technique & integrated some basic chording with my right hand. Syncopation of both hands is a bit tricky but that creates the funk.
Hi James. The fundamental component of the sound is the EMG Block pickup going into a DBX 166 set for light compression just to control the peaks. From there I go into two channels of a mixing board. One channel is a flat EQ and the other channel has all the low and low mids rolled off and a boost in the highs to accentuate the slap sounds. That's it, hope this info helps and thanks for asking and watching.
I use Standard 10 string tuning. its perfect for this type of playing because it gives tremendous range without having your hands colliding. Thanks so much for watching and for the comment.
There is something so very primal about a well developed bass line. It resonates with a very ancient part of the brain I think. Perhaps it reminds us of our long heritage of drumming or maybe its just in harmony with the blood pulsing through our veins. In any event, I like it.
That's kinda crazy, it looks like there is a few treble strings and then a big bass string right in the middle, then a bunch of lighter strings under. This instrument is a frankenstein made for jamming!
Kevin- this is awesome. When I watched I immediately thought too bad you weren't still in Tucson! It would be so cool to have you as part of the New Year's Eve Jazz Gala at JW Marriott Starr Pass. You'd be an awesome addition to the already amazing line up!

When I'm in a lousy mood, I watch this. It's like medicine for the soul.
The chapman stick can be such an amazing bass instrument. Its the *bwaum* sound that really gets it going.
Between his trilby and mad Stick skills, this is too cool for me to watch too many times.
