And I've ALWAYS liked Mr Carrey (since living color) and now that he has inadvertently helped this happen I got mad love for the guy. I love this, your CZcams channel evolves as you evolve as a person. I have a channel, I wanted to be a little bit creative but I did not want to appear on camera myself, so I started making nature scenes and things just evolved. 4 years later it's also a small income that I love and enjoy.

I can find nothing of note negative about either of you, and doing videos on YTube is only a matter of having the guts to do them. How many views does it take to feel heard? For many it must feel risky to put time in to something and then not get many views. You make a good point about legacy. It will be good for my grand kids to know what I was like, what motivated me, what gave me purpose and why I lived the way I did. So in that case, just a few views would be enough.

    • @meganokelly
      @meganokelly  Před 5 lety

      Great question Kirk, thanks for asking. One of the hardest things for me about our cruising lifestyle is being away from family and friends for months on end. When I posted my first video I think I got less than 100 views over the first few days which felt amazing. I shared it on FB, Instagram and in personal emails to friends who aren't on social media. I think it was the messages I received back that made me feel heard vs. the # of views. Many friends said they felt like they were hanging out with me which was so cool to hear since I hadn't hung out with them in years. For me the entire process is very worthwhile & freeing; deciding what to share, writing, filming, editing and then sharing. Of course it feels good to see the numbers go up, as it does to receive comments & likes from people I've never had the pleasure of meeting so thank you!
      I also encourage people to make videos "unlisted" vs "public" and only share with people you feel comfortable with. I have plenty of those on my CZcams channel :-). I hope you go for it, I know your kids and grand kids, and their grand kids and their grand kids will LOVE it!!

      @@meganokelly New topic - cruising = missing family and friends. I have a plan to get a boat, but am wavering when I think about being away from everyone. It is so hard to try on potential feelings before they happen. Hard to know what "best" is. My current thought experiment is to budget for 2 months gone, 2 weeks back home. But I bet that is not doable in the pacific. Fewer marinas....

    • @meganokelly
      @meganokelly  Před 5 lety +2

      Yes that would be a great topic. Everyone's situation is unique so I have many questions about your situation. For example, if you're cruising the Bahamas, going home every 2 months wouldn't be a problem (Treasure Cay marina in the Abacos & Emerald Bay Marina in the Exumas to name a couple). We've tried different things like going home to Portland in the summer for an extended period and having family come visit us on the boat. Videos really help bridge the gaps and there is plenty of wifi and phone service in the Bahamas.

      I love hearing this Terry! We use a variety of cameras: iphone, gopro and 2 different Lumix, however the cameras on phones these days are amazing so I'd say start with that. We use Final Cut Pro and there are loads of youtube tutorials. I do love your idea though and will give it some thought just to give you a flavor on the basic skills you'd need to edit a video using final cut pro. I was intimidated for awhile on the editing but once I played around with it I realized how easy it was to get the hang of it. You can do it!!

    Just listened to the Under the Sheets podcast this morning which brought me here. So glad I subscribed. Both the podcast and this CZcams episode (is that what it's called) really spoke to me. Hubby and I are so mired down in "The Boat' search that it's no longer fun and the ultimate goal is getting cloudy. Then your video here about putting yourself out there, even if it's for a select audience, really struck a cord that is too complicated to explain here. "The Resistance" so resonates with me on so many levels. Need to get that book and start reading today. Just know you are making a difference, one view at a time. Today it really speaks to me and the next one may really help someone else. Keep it going.

      First of all, thank you so much Terry for listening to our podcast and watching our channels, we really love hearing from you! We were just talking today about doing an episode on "WHY" we choose to live this lifestyle since it can be very challenging at times (you should see the state of chaos our boat is in now!). I'm so happy my video spoke to you, you're going to love Steven Pressfield's books. You message certainly inspires me to keep going so thank you for that as well. The best part of sharing is growth; sharing is caring we've always heard, but ultimately it's growth and it feels good to grow and possibly inspire others to do the same.

      Thank you for your comment & question! I definitely know where you're coming from and have had those same thoughts (I think I've deleted my FB account 4 times). After meditating on it for years a few things really changed my mind: 1) I believe the world needs all the positive and inspirational energy it can get. 2) I've been and continue to be inspired by so many people who generously & courageously share their passion/wisdom/experience. 3) Words can't describe how good it feels to share my truth and then hearing from others that they're inspired pretty much blows my mind. I also love love love it when people share their own inspiring stories for everyone to read.

      @@TraneFrancks It's funny, I flew a lot with Nick when we were 19 & 20, landing on grass strips and small airports at night so I'm not sure what my resistance is all about other than I don't like being in small planes. We'll see, but I can relate to your wife! That said, how cool that you're a pilot, much respect.
      Thank you so much for the compliment about my channel, it's really a lot of fun and I'm thrilled to hear you are starting your own channel woo hoo! I can't wait to watch. I'm going to do my best to get a video out later this week about how to make a good video - interviewing Nick since he knows a thing or two ;-). Hope it will provide some good insight for you because his tips have really helped me. I think the confidence piece gets sorted every time you do it so I highly recommend hitting record and just letting your true self come out. It took some coaxing and some time alone with the camera. For example, the "why I quit drinking" I filmed when Nick was out fishing. Impressed you have a gimbal, we need one!

    • @TraneFrancks
      @TraneFrancks Před 4 lety

      @@meganokelly Re: pilot - I'm definitely not a pilot yet. My love of flying came by virtue of doing a lot of business travel and, well, you just can't get me out of a window seat while there's light to see outside. In Japan, there's no GA, so I can't even take a discovery flight. (There are only ATP schools for airlines.) That's yet another reason why plans be afoot to move me, the wife and the cat onto a boat in BC. I want some opportunities to go up, especially in a float plane.
      As for the gimbal, I bought a used DJI OSMO Mobile for my iPhone. Add a cheap, plug-in shotgun mic with a windscreen and it's a budget way to record with mostly gear you've got. Price of the mic and gimbal was equiv. ~$120. It was a reasonable expense for testing to see whether I like it, while honouring my tendencies towards wanting to appear reasonably competent out of the gate. Heh.
