'Captain & Me' and 'Toulouse St.' moved a 16 year old's music appreciation to the next level. Worth saying 1000 times, so glad I was a child of 70's Rock 'n Roll.
This is quite possibly my all time favorite album. Every song is top notch. Tom Johnston's voice is unmatched. What an album. Thanks Doobies for this excellence.
Agreed. My first Doobie Brothers concert waa the summer of 1976. Takin' it to the Streets tour. Didn't quite know what to expect. I had this album on cassette and had wore it out. Pat Simmons blew me away when about one quarter of the way through the show he said, " we are gonna pull one back out of the archives," and then played, " Clear as the driven Snow". I just smiled and knew I was in for a band that didn't just want to play radio hits but wanted a true fan base. It's still a great ride. I saw them outdoors in 2008 in St. Petersburg, Florida and they played nearly the entire "Captain" album. Ww walked away Wowed.
still sounds fresh... loved this tune i 1st heard it.... 1973? It's the harmonies, the synth chords (still not sure how they pulled that off with the technology back then), the bass line. Damn fine tune... love it.
It just angers me that they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I once wrote to ask why and was told that it was because they never had a large contribution to make them stand out, I ask all of you, can you remember of even imagine a Summer without listening to the Doobies? They ARE Summer!
I’d agree.. the early Doobies were all that 👍 The Captain & Me album was so very good. One of my absolute favs. The Michael McDonald Doobies I wasn’t all into.
One of the Most powerful Doobie Albums and some of their BEST works- Thank you for bringing me along for 50 years! You WERE AMAZING THEN & Still NOW‼🌞💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
This entire LP is the love of my life, from birth till I died....it was my first ..it was pre corruption teen,,,it was and is my soul in music,,it must be listened to in HiFi,,clear and loud,,start to finish,,,I fell in love with it..I met Tom Johnston and especially Tiran Porter,,thank God
I totally agree with all of these comments!!! One of the all time classic albums, and this is probably my favorite song- They should definitely be in the Hall of Fame!!
Thanks Greg! Arguably true. I put the follow up album "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits" at a similar plateau of Doobie heights of musical composition.
Greg I asked Tommy, Pat and John to bring back and play Ukiah in concert back in 2014 Tommy told me that they tried to practice it but found it difficult to play for whatever reason. They did bring back in concert Neal's Fandango Eyes of Silver and Road Angel as I requested. -Larry G. Golden, Colorado
Without a doubt, the best Doobie album in my opinion. Every track flows seamlessly into the next. Love the balance between acoustic and electric guitars throughout entire album. Listening to the amazing separation on the 4 channel recording of this masterpiece recording is amazing and a testament how well recorded album was produced. A perfect rock album classic! Why this band isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is beyond me and induction is past overdue.
There have been many great albums by many great bands and many of those albums had a cut or 2 or three that sagged a bit and weren't up to the integrity of the overall album. Not so with The Captain and Me from the opening riff to the final fade it stays tight and fresh and doesn't drag for a moment. Just a very, very special album.
Joe, I missed Vietnam by a year or so (not that I'm complaining), but did 23 years in the trail that you broke. Thanks for clearing the way. P.S. I love this album and the group.
Hope you are doing well, brave vet, and are being treated honorably. I am grateful to you for your selfless service. You have excellent musical taste as well!
My husband is 67 and use to surf Steamer's! His mother would drive him past Santa's Village through Loma Prieta past the Doobies mountain home! Neil's Fandango! Loves The Doobie Bros and Steely Dan and at 67 still rips big waves!
Remembering listening to this album, and its awesome finale, in an Amtrak dome car, travelling back east on a USA Rail Pass in 1978. The 8-track never sounded so great, watching that sunset across the great plains. Unforgettable tunes, unforgettable journey...
Doobie Brothers have always had a very strong emotional affect on me. Their music goes straight to the soul! This album and "Vices" in particular became very important to me in a big way back when they came out in the 70's and every time I hear it, it takes me there and back. Can't express enough love for this band. Tom Johnston has the most original voice and plays such great licks. I have to say, as a guitar player, no classic era music I love playing is quite as satisfying as playing to Doobie Brothers music. Tom's guitar in Daughters of the Sea off "Vices" is just such perfection. I don't think he gets recognized as much as he deserves, you feel every note he plays. He and Patrick are both uniquely talented guitarist. The voices, the grooves and percussion and great song writing. A very important and special band!
It is not dying...there are still 'some' out there that still write good music like this. They may be playing in bars, entertaining their limited audiences, undiscovered and unsigned. Do not lose faith.
as I listen "over 50 years of that " its dead the part that cant be denied is that its all been done , not to be sad! there is volumes of music to listen too! "rock is dead they say ,long live rock"
I grew up with the Doobie Brothers. They are my all time favorite. There is no other band that blends rock and roll with a variety of different instruments, harmony and just flat out great lyrics with meaning!
What a deeply Spiritual song set, Every Christmas Eve I’d go it evening mass And I’d play this on the way home Once a year only with tears in my eyes. Tonight, I’m playing this for the first time all those years ago, tears running down my face I’ve been listening to this amazing band since 1973, Jesus, My Captain- this one’s for you…. Tommy Struska
Love these DB two tunes...brings me back to another time when there was a clearer connection to the beauty of the world around us...People workin' with their hands, connected to the land and lovin' it...if only...
When I moved to The Netherlands I had this album and it was on my recordplayer for months at the time. None of my Dutch friends did understand the music. They still don't and I still listen to it and get that glorious feeling of freedom.
You got to be kiddin'!? Same here. I repeat - same here! Woon in 020. Groeide op in de Veluwe. Niemand had mijn TDB fascinatie - tenzij ik liet horen waarom ;)
One of their greatest albums they ever released! I remember drinking a couple of cold beers and getting down with the Doobie Brothers. Many, many great memories Thanks.
Just saw the Doobies in Wauseon, Ohio, last night…..Nothing but good things to say about them!…..Excellent X2! My wife and I saw them in Chicago a million years ago…..They are still as fresh as the first time we saw them! God be with the Doobie Brothers.
Because it was a a place in time. The Doobie Bro's music is just soo friggin, frackin grrrrreeaaatt Manuel!! Captian and Me was released in '73. My 18th year, here... All their songs let you in, just takin it to the streets!! Enjoy an listen to the music Franz!!
I teach music in H.S. and getting kids to sing now days is getting harder and more difficult. They are drawn into little cocoons with all this technology. You would think music would come more naturally with everything at the push of a button thru "google"
Huh. Who knew. A little Ukiah history. "Patrick Simmons' short solo guitar piece "Busted Down Around O'Connelley Corners" segues into "Ukiah", which Johnston wrote in tribute to the (Ukiah) area. 'We played a few shows in Ukiah, and I used to camp out a lot in the area when I was going to college,' he said. The song's back-to-the-land sentiments also reflected some of his feelings at the time, although he admitted he probably couldn't make it as a farmer. This track segues into the album closer and title track, 'The Captain and Me'."
Along with the Eagles,The Doobies deserve a place on the Mt. Rushmore of great American rock bands. 50+ years and still going strong!
Who would be the others?
Doobies yeah , eagles ? no better POCO !
Amen to that!.John M Guinto
I'm 67 years old and I don't think we'll ever see this kind of music again unfortunately.....
I've already inducted the Doobies, John Fogarty, Bob Seger and Traffic into the fictitious Southern, music Hall of Fame.
'Captain & Me' and 'Toulouse St.' moved a 16 year old's music appreciation to the next level.
Worth saying 1000 times, so glad I was a child of 70's Rock 'n Roll.
Me to, only l was 17!
You and me both
I'm still getting high listening to these boys I'm almost 70! Wow! What happened to time? It just slipping away? Peace and love!
Ain't it though
This is quite possibly my all time favorite album. Every song is top notch. Tom Johnston's voice is unmatched. What an album. Thanks Doobies for this excellence.

These guys the Doobie's are the gold standard in music for all time.
Captain And Me was a masterpiece. The album was a collection of musical genius.
Agreed. My first Doobie Brothers concert waa the summer of 1976. Takin' it to the Streets tour. Didn't quite know what to expect. I had this album on cassette and had wore it out. IS
I think it could be a “ Greatest Hits “ album by itself.Right up there with or even better than “ Escape” by Journey or “ Who’s Next” by The Who.
@@robertwalker1803 how can you even try to compare those?.. ridiculous
@@howardjohny , wow.I guess only your opinion is right.
The great vision of "The Captain & Me" ~ epic songwriting!
I don't often play this song but when I do my neighbors also hear it.
Long live the Doobie Brothers.
Me too James, me too !! Peace brother !
still sounds fresh... loved this tune i 1st heard it.... 1973? It's the harmonies, the synth chords (still not sure how they pulled that off with the technology back then), the bass line. Damn fine tune... love it.
ABSOLUTELY! DB#1
that's the ONLY way to play it!!
As they should! :)
Not only are they great musicians, the harmonies are beautiful.
One of my favorite albums of all time . Every song is killer. Timeless
The Segway from Eukiah to Captain is ethereal. This is just a great smoke a joint piece of music.
You got that right brother...🤘😎💨💨💨
ok, i'll give it a shot
Yes sir...They would agree that's why they're
The Doobie Brothers 😎 👍
Magical in its own terms and right! This is one of a kind!!!
It just angers me that they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I once wrote to ask why and was told that it was because they never had a large contribution to make them stand out, I ask all of you, can you remember of even imagine a Summer without listening to the Doobies? They ARE Summer!
The greatest group ever. The greatest album ever. How can something 45+ years old still have such an effect on me?
cuz its that good , and i bet you appreciate it more now, than you did then !
My top 5 albums of my life. I'm 68.!
Hard to argue with you.
I’d agree.. the early Doobies were all that 👍
The Captain & Me album was so very good. One of my absolute favs.
The Michael McDonald Doobies I wasn’t all into.
This album is etched into my soul ...from my early high school days to present day...
One of the Most powerful Doobie Albums and some of their BEST works- Thank you for bringing me along for 50 years! You WERE AMAZING THEN & Still NOW‼🌞💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
These two classic songs run together and deserve to be heard in sequence. Thanks for posting this closing medley from my favorite Doobies LP.
Yes I agree! These two tracks are embedded in musical history m. Pure genius!❤️
Released 50 years ago and it's still my favorite album.

I saw them they were touring this album and the first one Sacramento Memorial Auditorium they were on fire so good! 1973
I still have this album, and it still plays, scratches and all!
a sin that they're not in the Hall - these dudes raised me - positive, feel good energy - what a young kid desperately needed.
What a great song. Thanks Doobies.
Ukiah holds a special place in my heart; the music exemplifies love for the land.
...and a repudiation (for me) of technology and the increased frenetic pace of life it produces.
my sentiments exactly
yes
Start to fabulous finish...possibly the best Doobies album ever!
Thanks Greg! Arguably true. I put the follow up album "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits" at a similar plateau of Doobie heights of musical composition.
Agreed Chris!

are you my evil twin Skippy ?
Me too. I was 15. What a year...TJS
I was 21 in 1973. To recognize a classic at 10 is fantastic.
Toulouse street ( side 1 ) The captain & me ( side 2 ) ...that is the BEST of all time ?
This album 1973 and these songs were an important part of the transition from Vietnam War to a time to chill and groove. Joe the Vet.
Thank you joe the vet

Joe, I missed Vietnam by a year or so (not that I'm complaining), but did 23 years in the trail that you broke. Thanks for clearing the way.

The guitar work is fine as anything I've heard.

Of all the Doobie Brothers songs, these two I beleive are the best one two punch of all!

People have no clue. This album; and these two songs are so awesome. I fear this kind of songwriting talent and ability is dying. Doobies rule.

How can this group not be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when Madonna, RUN DMC and all that other crap like them is in thereÉ
Because the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke
They're in the minds and ears of people with good musical taste. That's all that matters.
