    When setting the storage area the blocks are on their sides. I was taught to always use them with the openings up and down. Is there much difference in the block strength one way compared to the other?

      The strength of block are in the upright position, same concept as stringers under a floor.

    • @jcgoogle1808
      @jcgoogle1808 Před 4 lety

      You have to consider the 2 types of loading the blocks are subjected to in either case.
      Imagine a short cylinder of concrete with a load applied to the top. Everything in the cylinder is in compression.
      Now imagine a board supported at each end. If a load is applied in the middle of the board in the downward direction the top of the board compresses and the bottom of the board is stretched or subjected to tension.
      Concrete works very well in compression, but is relatively weak in tension. That's why the bottom portion of composite concrete beams, suspended slabs, decks etc have a lot of steel in the bottom half of the cross section.
      Concrete masony units (CMU) are designed to carry vertical loads to the foundation. Not for bending.
      If you look at the masonry units used to support the building there is almost as much cross sectional area of concrete in the vertical direction no matter which way you turn them.
      But if you turn them so that the cells are horizontal as they installed them, the concrete on top has to act as a beam to tranfer the load to the vertical portions of the concrete.
      Since there is no tensile reinforcement, the blocks could fail. On the other hand in this case the spans are so short the much of the load is on top of a vertical portion and stresses as a result of bending probably won't exceed even the very low allowable tensile stress of the concrete.,... unless they fill the building up with a bunch of heavy stuff.
      Bottom line the cells should be up. This also allows rebar to be placed and the cells and filled with concrete to create a stronger structure.
      Wordy but now you know why.

    If you placed the blocks with the holes up/down, the blocks will be more likely to sink into the ground. By placing them horizontal, they will not sink as much. Just looking at the location of the container there will be a significant amount of water runoff from the building and road. I bought a new 14x60 mobile home for my lake lot. The professional setup used two blocks horizontal side by side with a single stack of vertical blocks. There were a total of eight piers.

    I would have saved a bunch of the lumber or some firewood as blocks to build up under the box so you don't have to dig into the dirt to lift it. Then, have some lumber to build a skirt under the new location. But then, I can't let a good 2x go to the dump. Where I live, a "Free, you disassemble" on CraigsList would have had the tin and long 2xs gone with the rest left on the ground. It would have looked like it was being attacked by a swarm of ants.
    When is Aaron going to learn to run something besides a chain saw and his mouth? Looks like he made it 10 feet in the loader. Put the camera in the cab of a piece of equipment and give his a precision task to accomplish. It will be fun to hear him complain..err, explain about the difficulties others put in his way. Very entertaining.

    Thanks love the video Michael you must know something I don't know I'll guarantee you those blocks don't last a year underneath their they might last a year but they won't last two it's people put more and more stuff in their those blocks are going to crumble and if you're lucky it won't tilt into the full Barn that needs to be taken off of there and put two loads of gravel in there I didn't block it up I know I know it's easy to be an armchair quarterback but I've been there and done that and had to bring the equipment back in pull the container up away from the wall reskin the side of the pole barn and then don't do loads of Rock and compact to level pad and then put the container back on the pad and I use the good concrete blocks to the ones the old-fashioned ones remember the ones that are made out of actual concrete sorry to rain on your parade but it would be easier now to talk your customer into doing the gravel thing and have him pay for the gravel then it would for you to have to skin the side of the building and remove your equipment in and you have to pay for the whole thing just a suggestion love your Channel I Miss The Itachi thanks dude later peace out
