To all those haters always bad mouthing Africa catch a wake up call. I live in Johannesburg and this is exactly how it's like. I was born in London and have travelled to the USA and many other 1st world countries. I'm sick of the world only showing negative things about Africa. Africa does have a lot of problems but the world doesn't only have to focus on the bad. All African countries unite South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Angola, Ethiopia and the rest of Africa lets show the haters with they're stereotypes and negativity what we are made of.

You guys ain't better than someone from Ghana or ivory coast all apart of Africa and dont forget south Africa will always be an African country it's not European or American. Dont portray it to fit with europe or America.

So i have copied this thing from a forum here you go hope it helps
      1) Stay at places with security. This could mean doormen, keycard entry, and walls, gates, and/or fences.
      2) Learn about the local dangers in every destination you visit. Take the time to talk to your hotel or guesthouse staff when you arrive and find out about what actions and places to avoid.
      3) Don’t put yourself in isolating situations. In Croatia or Vietnam, I wouldn’t hesitate to hang out on a mostly deserted beach where there were three or four other people around, some distance away. But I wouldn’t do that in South Africa.
      4) Don’t drive in cities at night. Take taxis. Taxi drivers know how to avoid carjacking hotspots and are rarely carjacked.
      5) If you visit a township (and you should), go with a guide. Some townships can be dangerous, but your guide will know which parts are safe. You’ll get much more out of the visit, too.
      6) If you go on safari, listen to your guide. Don’t ever get out of your vehicle unless you have explicit permission to do so. Don’t stand up, either. (“Kate, sit down,” was something I heard again and again on our game drives.)
      7) If you’re connecting flights in Johannesburg, wrap your bag. I’ve never used the airport bag wrapping machine, but I did for the first time in South Africa. Johannesburg is a bit of a hotspot for luggage robbery. And as always, you shouldn’t put anything valuable in your checked bags.

+NovaFaction | Gaming That's pretty good advice. I'd only add to the taxis part: Ask the driver or the guy sitting next to the driver where it's going. You wanna make sure you're in the right taxi and sometimes you will get a jerk passenger who lies so it's best to ask the driver.
I really love Joburg (Which is what most people call Johannesburg). I was born there and I live really close to it. So I know there's a lot of amazing places to go there and it can be really awesome but I think Cape Town is better to go to if you're a tourist who's just in for some sun and fun. Beautiful beaches, a mountain, loads of wine farms and wild penguins. Joburg's more of a cultural experience, it's not as designed for tourists as Cape Town.
If you want to go to Joburg I think it's best to go on guided tours, like the Soweto bus ride that way you don't have to worry about crime, they'll keep you safe. Also you should go to Maropeng and the Sterkfontein Caves. It's about an hour's drives outside of Joburg and totally worth the visit.

The poor videos that charities show of Africa with starving children are just marketing strategies to get you to donate when in reality a huge percentage of your donation goes to the charity owners instead of the cause.
Yes there are poor poverty struck areas in Africa. But even America and Canada have areas like these (Indian reserves, ghetto etc) but these select areas in Africa are made to look like the majority of Africa, which is very incorrect.

I just read all the comments on this thread and trying to process what's really going on. It appears that Caucasians once dominated south Africa, the home to Africans (Black People) by stealing their land, which was stolen goods, positioned Caucasians to build a beautiful city, yet majority of Africans were mistreated, treated like second class citizen at "their home" and Caucasians didn't want to share equal rights.
Africans got tired of the mistreatment for years, fought back to regain their land, their home.
In the midst of that battle, Johannesburg businesses suffered. Now, Africans have regained their property, without any funds to rebuild because it was stolen; and now Caucasians are pointing the fingers at Africans because of its current condition by calling it a ghetto. As though it is Africans' fault.
Africa is a beautiful continent. That's why non-Blacks/non-Africans can not stay away. Africa sustains this world with her natural resources. They want to steal her natural resources and land and expect Africans to abide quietly.
Now it is a challenge for some Africans because they were never placed in a position of control/ leadership. Many were never taught business skills to maintain. It takes time to rebuild anything in life. Hang in there African brothers and sisters. Africa is YOUR birth right. A change is coming!!!! Many Blacks and Africans have been mentally programmed by the evil ones placing them at a disadvantage in life; while they retain the position of privilege for hundreds of years.
Africans, don't ever feel discouraged. If it was a fair race in the beginning, I will assure you the negative condition of some Blacks and Africans would not reflect it in the end. Some people have to cheat to win.

Thank you for shedding some light on a sore subject. I think that people should take this video for what it is: a tourism video. I understand that this video is not an accurate depiction of the ENTIRETY of Johannesburg, but for those of use attempting to learn about other aspects of the country than it being the rape capital of the world, it will definitely suffice. In the United States, we have plenty of ghettos that aren't seen in our tourism videos or on the mainstream media, and Brock Turner proves that rape can happen to anyone in any situation, even at a prestigious university one would assume to be a safe haven.
Specifically in regards to tourism videos, a video about Denver will show you the Mile High Stadium and the Rocky Mountains, not Park Hill and Colfax Avenue. A tourism video about New York will show you Times Square and the Statue of Liberty, not the South Bronx and Harlem Slums. There are plenty of other hateful videos that portray the negative aspects of South Africa, and I am so thankful that there is at least one objective video that allows me to learn about the POSITIVE aspects of Johannesburg and South African culture. (With an extremely beautiful host, I must add)
