My brother is a huge Bill's fan, and after a semi successful 2014 for Buffalo going 9-7 behind a good 4-3 defense, he was excited they hired Rex. I was scratching my head. As I told him, Rex is a pure 3-4 defensive coach. It just doesnt fit at all! Because he is either going to drastically force them to play 3-4 which most 4-3 defenses dont have the personnel for, and/or be lost in the 4-3 concepts and philosophies.

This game was literally my greatest moment as a fan of the bills for a decade until 2017 when we ended the drought. We expectedly lost the previous week to the AFC West champion Broncos, but the next two weeks were supposed to be cakewalks. We beat the Pats in week 17 because they were playing backups. The 2014 Bills team was the first Bills team to finish a season with a winning record in 10 years...the 2014 defense was nasty, the offense cost them a couple of games and was the difference in the team missing the playoffs. There was a game against the Chiefs where the Bills were winning and put together a good drive on offense, their RB then fumbles at the 1-yard line and it goes through the endzone creating a touchback for the Chiefs, had the Bills scored they would've gone up two possessions and would have very likely won the game given how the defense was playing that game, there was also a Texans game where the Bills forced a turnover, had the ball deep in Texans territory, and EJ Manuel threw the ball right into JJ Watt's gut for an 80 yard pick 6 and completely changed the trajectory of the game. Still, because of the defense, it was a pretty fun team to watch that season...

This was a huge win for the Buffalo Bills because it guaranteed that they wouldn't finish with a losing record for the first time in ten years. But unfortunately the playoff drought would continue when they lost to the 2-12 Oakland Raiders the following week. In my opinion that game sealed the fate of Doug Marrone.
