    I toured the Buffalo Trace Distillery, and as part of the tour I asked about the difference between Eagle Rare and Buffalo Trace bourbon. The guide said the main difference is barrel location in the rackhouse. The eagle rare barrels are stored at the bottom in more "cellar" like conditions and the Bourbon Trace barrels mid to top with larger temperature fluctuations. The larger temperature fluctuations result in the whiskey pulling more flavors from the barrel.

    • @thirdbaseman124
      @thirdbaseman124 Před 4 lety +12

      They always store the younger whiskey's higher up since they age quicker from the temperature fluctuations and the oldest ones (like Pappy) are on the bottom. It's not necessarily that they pull "more" flavor if they are higher up, but it happens more rapidly. You also get different flavors, check out Elmer Lee's old interview on CZcams.

      I love to deep richness the darker hollers bring to Eagle rare.

    • @dezert1500
      @dezert1500 Před 3 lety +2

      Spot on with the stacking differences of each. Higher stacking and temperature fluctuations increases evaporation. Scotch Whisky is only a max of 3 barrels high and obviously with much lower temperature fluctuations in Scotland. I prefer Buffalo Trace. More of a tall rounded profile. Eagle Rare is a ramp up and down finish in a different direction. It doesn't balance well. A good scotch is flatter with more complexity and a sublime finish.

    Recently bought Eagle rare 2 weeks ago for the first time in 2 years. Poured a little bit from a 2 year bottle with a quarter left, taste tested it. Then opened and tried the new bottle of eagle rare and was relieved to see that the flavor is still wonderfully the same, :) Thank you Buffalo Trace for keeping the flavor the same and not ruining anything, Cheers!

    Buffalo Trace is one I REALLY wanted to be in my four recommended bourbons due to my own whiskey journey over the past three years. I did make my own review video on it when I first sampled it from my own bottle a month ago. I had it for the first time in December of 2017 on my own channel and it was literally the second whiskey I ever filmed myself tasting. It's a wonderful introduction for someone who has never really partaking in straight spirits, I know back then I still had to get used to the alcohol smell.
    I also need to buy a new bottle... it um... went quick since it was a smaller bottle, just like my Wild Turkey 101 always does at my bar. It will always be a must bourbon to my own private tastings. I host them for friends, family and associates for now.
    I've even been mulling over a checklist for them to mark off before the tasting so I know what other bottles they might prefer. Does the Wizard Academy have such a checklist for trying to narrow down a persons taste profile? The quick method I use is that I always ask how they take their morning coffee. And if they don't drink that, I can just gauge what their most common beverage of choice seems to be, and go from there. ;)

    I’ve been sitting here sipping on this all evening, and I’ve noticed apple and cinnamon stand out to me a lot, but there’s been a very string flavor that I couldn’t pick out, and once “freshness” was mentioned, it made me immediately pick out what it was; fresh cut grass.
    I’m probably one of the rare cases, but I LOVE the smell of fresh cut grass enough to enjoy the flavor of it (only other time I know I tasted fresh cut grass was the bean-boozled jelly beans, so don’t worry, I’m not out eating grass as I mow the lawn).

    Wild Turker 101, although my favorite everyday drinker, is not an "introductory" bourbon, in my opinion. At 101, a bit too much bite, I think. Coincidentally, I have always used Eagle Rare as my introductory bourbon for newbies. Smooth, buttery, easy drinking. Good for a beginner.

    Hadn't been able to find Eagle Rare in any local place. But somehow on a 1400 mile road trip, I found some in a gas station outside of Des Moines Iowa. Really love it, and while I usually have a budget bourbon to mix with root beer for a cool summer drink, I have found the Buffalo Trace is quite delicious in apple juice.

    This was spot on message - I’m new to bourbon and watched a number of your posts. My first was Buffalo Trace (loved it and at $60.00, was doable) followed by Weller 12 yr.($199.00 and not nearly as enjoyable). Took a short break and then tried Eagle Rare (really nice, slightly more than Buffalo at $80.00). Then I tried Four Roses ($85.00) - was disappointing with a burn in, followed by burn and finished with a burn!. So my journey pretty much follows your recommendations. One thing I will say about Four Roses - it becomes a lot more enjoyable when it’s the only bottle left on the shelf!

    I've started to watch these videos when I happen to have the same whiskey at home and taste it along with you to practice and see how much similarity I get with what you get. I've come to see that it's quite common to taste the same major notes but some of the supporting notes I'll get different things. I seem to get amaretto a lot of times when you guys get something like icing or vanilla. I wonder how much memories and other intangible factors affect an individual's palate compared to physical taste bud differences.
