I remember watching this the night it aired. The tv promos that they played leading up to that night, really gave it a good push and made people think that this episode was going to a big deal. At that time, it definitely worked. Things like this were very special back then, and created great feel-good holiday moments.
Fun fact: the guy who plays Santa in this episode is Douglas Seale, an amazing guy who also played Santa Claus in 'Earnest Saves Christmas'. To me he will always be the true Santa Claus. RIP Douglas ;)
The thing that I loved about this show was that it was like Twilight Zone only 'warmer'. It didn't try to be scary or grim, it just let your imagination soar with the possibilities it presented.
I was just a toddler when this came out but my dad recorded it off TV along with some other Christmas specials that I grew up watching. This really brings back memories!

I just ordered season 1 of Amazing Stories so that I can watch this any time I want to. I love Christmas and can watch Christmas specials and movies any time of the year. What a great mood lifter! My boys--now grown men--will sure enjoy seeing this again, too.

I remember watching this when it first aired. I was 6 years old. It’s as much a holiday staple for me as “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” or “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” And the music is fantastic!
I just watched this fully right now (Christmas Eve 2020) and I think it is a lovely Christmas story. I love the chase scene, it reminded me of Back To The Future (makes sense since Steven Spielberg wrote this story and produced the BTTF films). I remember seeing this for the first time! They don't make them like this anymore. Although I would say this does follow along the same suite as Rod Serling "Twilight Zone". Amazing times, amazing actors, amazing stories. 👍
At 26:07 you can see that when Pat Hingle is holding the Flash Gordon toy gun the tip of the pinky of his left hand is missing. In the early 60's Mr Hingle had an accident in which he felt into the shaft of an elevator that was out of service, sustaining multiple injuries, including the amputation of that part of the finger.
I spent years and years trying to find out what this was cause I had a old VHS tape that had this and all i remember was the kid shooting santa in the forehead and Santa dropping the present to the cop. And all I remember I didn't think it was a show. Dude played the voice for Jazmine's father in Aladdin

This is a Christmas classic that I rate up there with Rudolph Charlie Brown and others from the sixties especially the way it ends

Yes, because Amazing Stories was Spielberg’s “modern” (at the time) ripoff of Rod Sterling’s the Twilight Zone.
