    Having decided to buy one of these next month, I've been obsessed with watching videos about it.
    This was a pretty good video about the device. The last one I watched was some guy that had never even looked at an emulator before. He said he spent 5 hours just trying to load a single ROM (after learning that he actually had to find a ROM in the first place), then spent half the video complaining how he essentially bought a DIY device not realizing it didn't just come with games out of the box. Followed be him telling people not to get it if they wanna use it to play games because it's "too much work to set up"....

    Wow, I just ordered my RP2+ today and now I see this video and I'm even more excited now. I just sold my RP2. I thought that one was also great, but I'm really sold because of the performance improvement and touch screen the RP2+ has. I used my RP2 a lot as a home console. Just like you demonstrated I connected it to my TV and used my 8bitdo (snes version) as a controller. I never again want my retro console to be without hdmi output. It's brilliant! I still like to know how you managed that streaming stuff, like "the Snitch" stuff you demonstrated.

    Excellent video.
    This is the RP2+ in a nutshell.
    It's good enough for some early 3D consoles like PS1, PSP, N64, and Dreamcast, but also can even be stretched into a little gamecube and ps2. Another great use of this console is playing native Android ports of classic games. Many of the final fantasy games have native Android ports FROM SquareEnix WITH controller support. Games like Final Fantasy 1, 2, and 3 and CronoTrigger run VERY well. Now most of these you could emulate, but some have had upscaling/ slight improvements to UI and audio. Some of them are worth the cost.

    So I've had my Retroid Pocket 2+ for about a week now, and got it all set up. It is definitely a fantastic device, and the ability to have 250+ games from my childhood, classics, and many I missed out on, is incredible - it's like having a family game library and does everything up to PS1 and Dreamcast exceptionally well. GameCube hit and miss.
    I would say, I would enjoy a guide to DIG on Android. I have not had issues with the Retroid launcher and kinda like it, but would like a good option for backup or if I want to try something new! The MiYoo mini is still my favourite device, even after playing with the RP2+ for a week. I just don't bother much with high end emulation so there's no need to carry around a big device to play dreamcast when 9/10 times I'm playing GBA or NES or whatever. Yeah dedicating devices to scenarios is a good way to spread them around. The MiYoo lives in my pocket, so I'm always finding random times throughout the day to bust it out, but the RP2+ lives on my coffee table and I'll probably only play it when I chill on the couch.

Is it being launched by a 3rd party launcher like the Retroid launcher, or the Dig launcher? If so, then try launching it manually, setting the controls, saving settings if applicable, and then exiting the app, and then starting it up again to see if your controls stuck. Yay rp2+ video! Honestly, I needed a video like this. Lucky for me I know the specs of this device by heart, huh 😁
    If you want to stream games, 1280x1024 is actually a 5:4 res, 1280x960 is 4:3, exactly double the screen res.
    Personally, I kind of don't really like Dig. My first gripe was when it recognised Colin McRae rally 2 as a ps2 game and offered me no way to change it. Another issue - in the end, it's easier for me to fire up Retroarch, or a dedicated emulator, and run from there. Still waiting for a nice solution like Emulationstation, but I don't think that will happen. Probably issues with the way Android is built.
    As for tinkering, well, I do own android phone. Because of tinkering, mind you, doesn't have anything to do with the fact a new iPhone is 5x more expensive! Nothing at all!

      The MiYoo mini is still my favorite retro handheld, even after getting this, for what it's worth. Get the Mini if portability is important to you, or if you like that form factor, get the retroid if you want to play some more advanced stuff, or if you think you will like the wider format. Honestly they are both great devices for the price.

    Oh Jesus.. Retroarch, the UI that makes Dolphin seem simple. There's a learning curve to it, it's cores are hit or miss, and the risk/reward for touching anything in the setting menus is bonkers. I find myself just using individual emulators that run way better like DuckStation.

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah you're not wrong! Every time I want to change settings I have to carefully think through what I'm doing and what is getting saved when I click which save button, and I commonly think to myself 'surely this is way more complex than it needs to be'.

    I think you are wrong. This device IS simple and straightforward. Its made to be easy to use right out of the box with the preinstalled apps and launcher. No its not as simple as turning it on and picking a game but once you have it setup you basically can just turn it on, pick the game, and away you go.

  • @TheCoolDave
    @TheCoolDave Před 2 lety +1

    I really looked at this device but, the hours needed to tweak stuff kind of was a turn off. Let me say this, I have Steam Deck on order, due Q3 so I was looking a interim device. I have ViTA and PSP but, emulation is broken up it, and not a great experience. I ended up going to a Miyoo Mini for now, it's cheap but, does up to PSX fine.
    I really wanted to love device and get one but, the TWEAKING needed just to run games seemed like a hassle. These type of devices are just a pickup and play, and Tweaking the heck out of games kind of defats the point of them..
    Q3 is not too far away and then, I wont' even need to "stream" Nintendo Switch games, I can play them on the Steam Deck...

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb Před 2 lety +1

      Good call on the Steam deck! I don't think I'm going to pull the trigger on that one, especially because I don't have any need for portable PC gaming since I don't really leave my dungeon of solitude in my mom's basement very often :P
      Honestly the MiYoo mini is still my favourite device. The Retroid is fun to tinker with, and it's nice to be able to play some N64 and saturn games, but the MiYoo mini is the perfect device for 16 bit era games. And it just WORKS! Which is the most important thing when you want to grab a gameboy and play some pokemon in the tub.

      @TheCoolDave Před 2 lety

      @@TechDweeb So I looked into it and I guess I am going back to the OLED Vita for now. N64 games are playable now, they were not a few years ago (well a good chunk of them) and all the PS games (PSP, Vita and PS1), never mind RetroArch for all the classic systems, I have not run into a game that it wont play.

    I have the older version without the touch screen, and yeah its a bit of a turn off for me. I've barely touched the thing as there's more accessible and easier options on my shelf. I feel sad for the thing, really. I'm considering buying the upgrade parts (board and touch screen) from the Retroid website, and maybe from there I'll turn the device into a game design testing handheld for my Android projects.
    In the meantime I have the retroid Pocket 2+ just a few days from delivery followed by the Miyoo Mini. And just yesterday I got my Ayn Odin Pro in the mail which is my new Gamecube + PS2 + PSP goto!

      I'd LOVE to get the Odin Pro (or something similar) someday, the performance looks amazing and the actual device itself is a great design. That's probably my overall fav device in that price range. Although I have a hard time justifying the purchase of expensive portable devices because I rarely leave my mom's basement, my MiYoo mini is still my fav device, that's the one I grab for some Dragon Warrior in the tub or some Advance Wars in bed.
