A lot of the backtracking is baked into the story of certain chapters, but they could at least add a return pipe akin to SPM to make things more convenient. It'd at least make the troubles WAAAAYYYYY less of a headache.

That is the main thing people don't mention too, it'd be a little tricky to sell warps or cuts to the backtracking when it does sacrifice some narrative weight in certain chapters, mainly 4, somewhat/partially 2 & 7.

One change I'd like to see is swapping the Bowser Fight in Glitzville with Jr. Troopa from Paper Mario 64.
Bowsers appearance in the chapter never made sense to me and always felt kind of random. I think a fight with Jr Troopa fits the surprise so much better and ending up in Glitzville just makes sense with the character.

The search for General White is an unfortunate video game meme at this point, but allow me to play devil's advocate for a moment and say that both it and the Creepy Steeple backtracking actually does have narrative significance and shouldn't be majorly changed.
Now before everyone demands I be burned at the stake for sacrilige, please hear me out. One of my favorite details about TTYD and why I love this game as much as I do is because of how real it makes the Mario universe feel. The construction of the world and its npc's really emphasize that this is a world that Mario's adventure is taking place in, not a world for Mario's adventure to take place in. Most of the characters in the game don't have any prior knowledge of Mario or his legacy, despite the few who do know acknowledging his history and past achievements. This again emphasizes that this world does not revolve around the existence of Mario, and that he is not the main character of his reality despite being the main character of this game. Contrary to the name, and unfortunately the implications set by some other games that will not be mentioned here, Paper Mario feels more like the real world than any "real" Mario game has and likely ever will, and that's a great contrast to the platformers that should be welcomed, not scorned, by Nintendo or the fanbase.
What all this has to do with justifying backtracking is that this is an unfortunate aspect of reality that is meant to further immerse the player into the world of Mario and make it feel real. Real life doesn't operate at anyone's convenience, even if it might seem so from time to time, and sometimes we as real people in the real world have to retrace our steps and go back to previous places with new insight that we didn't know we'd need or couldn't have known previously. The General White search even takes this a step further because the reason he was so hard to find was because he was simultaneously searching for you, as per the instruction of Murluvlee after having his fortune taken to guide him down the right path, a service that Mario himself can pay to have at any point in the game. The fact that an npc character is actively traveling the world, using its services, and engaging with other npc's and Mario to fullfill their own life and solve their own problems put the perspective of the characters in a brand new and very real light, showing that every individual has their own autonomy and purpose. This kind of character building usually happens only in sidequests but to have it present in the main campaign is a very humbling and impactful, albeit annoying, message that the world we are experiencing is an actual world, and that motivates the player to want to save it.
I can concede that the backtracking could be streamlined, like maybe rearrange the required characters that help you find General White to more effectively use the sewer warps to reward unlocking them or maybe increase the Amazy Dayzee spawn rate on Twilight Trail during the repeat treks of Chapter 4 so that the time spent can potentially have long term value. But backtracking is not an inherently negative quality that should be removed outright. Now, what I would like to see changed is perhaps the ability to pay the Trouble Center to accept two troubles at a time so that sidequest backtracking can be made more efficient, which would definetely help with the second General White search that is all the aggravation of the first and none of the redeeming qualities.

Luigi and the Marvellous Compass doesn't have to be a full length adventure. Could have each chapter be maybe 40 mins to an hour? As long as it hits the beats mentioned by his partners and the novels it would be very enjoyable. I think honestly the best part would be seeing what all the locations and characters he meets actually look like. Is Princess Eclair pretty or something else? Are the locations all food themed? Are what the partners telling us accurate? SO MUCH POTENTIAL!!

Oh man...as a fellow hard core, veteran Paper Mario TTYD player, boss rush and hard mode would absolutely make me the happiest man in the world lol! I also hope that Nintendo somehow adds Amiibo functionality to help find certain items easier. It took me forever to figure out all those ingredients to complete the recipe set. At least without having to research it online.
I have to disagree with the addition of the spin dash from 64 being incorporated to TTYD. That would defeat the purpose of having Yoshi, and would probably make finishing the game too easy for speed runners, lol.
Even to this day the backtracking is pretty tedious, especially in Chapter 2 for me personally, those darn Punies scattering like roaches from every enemy in the way, forcing me to fetch them from a completely different floor! OMG it was sooooo annoying!🤣

My biggest change would be to make badge drops more common for badges like quake hammer, as you stated Power quake and mega quake were removed in ttyd. The upside to that is that you can stack multiple quake hammer badges to make it stronger but the odds of getting a parabuzzy or moon cleft to drop such an item is so low it's basically never going to reasonably happen for you to see those stacked benefits so quake hammer falls off super quickly in ttyd compared to 64.

On difficulty, my hope is they just overhaul double pain to affect both Mario and the Partner as well as doubling enemy HP.
As a reward for using it, enemies have a much higher chance of dropping badges. The original drop rate for badges was astronomically low so buffing it to 3% or so with double pain would be nice.
If boss rematches are a thing you could also get something for beating them with double pain on.

  • @Rubberman202
    @Rubberman202 Před 7 měsíci +2

1.) Boss rematches would be cool, and since Super Mario RPG is doing it, I don't see why we can't get that out of this remake either. Maybe it can be accessed via a pipe next to the pipe that leads to the Pit of 100 Trials or something, although if Hooktail were to suddenly show up alive again at her castle, or if you could actually meet Lord Crump again post-game or some weird stuff like that, I'd be okay with that too (where would we meet the Smorgs, though). The prospect of Nintendo and Intelligent Systems bringing in unused bosses and enemies, though... I don't want to dream too big if I'm going to end up disappointed if they don't do it, but damn that would be cool.
2.) My problem with addressing the backtracking is that I don't see how they can do it without completely changing the level design for a lot of areas. It'd be one thing to say "oh here's a pipe so you don't have to go through all that", but that raises a question of when these pipes will turn up and just how far do these pipes go in terms of mitigating the backtracking, since doing this could have ramifications the developers didn't intend. Almost every chapter except chapter 3 has some degree of backtracking, though the most egregious cases are in chapters 2, 4, 5, and 7 as far as I can recall, and in the case of chapter 7 it's mostly because of General White, but the thing about General White is that the backtracking isn't an unintended tedious side effect, the tedium is the entire point behind tracking him down, because it's all part of a gag where White was apparently looking for you the entire time and that's why he kept wandering around from place to place. And that raises the question, should this game remove this segment, the whole point of it being a joke being played on the player, or should the remake preserve the original intent behind this? I don't know, I don't really have an answer to that. I know a lot of players would rather have it just be removed because most players don't really care for annoying jokes played on them, especially if the intent of the joke is to just waste your time, but I can still respect the idea behind this gag even if I know most people would rather just have it cut out.
3.) In-game sound tests are always good. And toggling between the original game's music and the remake's music is something all remakes should do going forward, IMO.
4.) In retrospect, yeah, only being able to do one trouble at a time is kind of annoying. Multi-tasking and being able to accomplish multiple sidequests at once is increasingly a staple in video games, especially RPGs, and I don't see why they wouldn't make this change here (unless they overlooked it, which given that this is being treated as a "new" Paper Mario game after Origami King, I would hope they actually gave everything in this remake some thought).
5.) The spin dash was a lot of fun, and if it was implemented in TTYD remake, it would certainly be a cool way to move around quickly before getting the Yoshi partner. Heck, even afterward, it'd be cool to just move around quickly while having any partner out so you don't have to repeatedly switch to Yoshi and back.
6.) Everyone complains about the Punies... I don't really have any memories of being frustrated with their A.I. but some refinement definitely wouldn't hurt. What I'd like is for there to be some hint that you can use Flurrie to help the Punies when battling the Jabbies, I went YEARS without knowing that tidbit.
7.) I don't know if Nintendo is really in the market for a "hard mode" for their RPGs, but I'd be down with that or a New Game+ if they decided to include one.
8.) Man, I hated that they cut Power Quake and Mega Quake from TTYD, stacking Quake Hammer just isn't the same, especially if you just want to use a weaker version of the same technique and not use up so much FP. I would love it if the remake rectified this, and added more badges to boot! Maybe also include a badge that includes Mario's classic colors (blue shirt, red overalls), and if combined with the L-Emblem badge, it can give Luigi's classic colors (White hat and overalls, green shirt)!
9.) Replay the Bowser segments? I wouldn't have even thought of that, that's brilliant (probably means Nintendo and Intelligent Systems won't actually do it).
10.) That's the first I heard of anything like that, it does sound tedious as a requirement for getting the Yoshi kid back, but as an optional challenge, that would be totally neat, especially if you actually fought the Yoshi!
11.) It's kind of a shame that only Parakarry and Bow were the only ones to show up post-game in the original game, considering all the previous party members were in the game's files. Finding fun ways for them to show up post-game would be fantastic!
12.) I'm one of those people who actually likes the idea of Luigi's Marvelous Compass adventure better being told about second-hand from Luigi, his partners and the Super Luigi books, makes things funnier and more interesting. There are a lot of scenarios described that don't sound like it would translate well to a traditional Paper Mario RPG format anyway. I WOULD like to see this remake include the original Paper Mario in it, and that's why we heard the original game's main theme when we see Mario and Luigi's home, but again, I won't hold my breath on that being the case.

I've been really enjoying your videos covering the remake of The Thousand-Year Door, I've even been binge-watching them regularly lol. I love your enthusiasm for the original Paper Mario trilogy, and as someone who very much shares that enthusiasm, I am just as excited as you are for this upcoming remake! Just like you, I still cannot believe that this is the timeline we are living in right now. It just doesn't feel real at all to me, but it is, and I couldn't be happier!
Anyway, one thing I'd like to see in the TTYD remake is for Prince Mush to be an optional boss. If I recall correctly, once you save him at the end of Chapter 3, you never see him again for the rest of the game. Jolene even mentions in one of her e-mails that he's planning to get back in the ring, so this is a missed opportunity that they could easily capitalise on. Making him a superboss you can take on after fighting through the Glitz Pit again would not only be a really cool and fun addition, but it would also make going through the Glitz Pit fights a second time actually worth it. I don't think this is too big of an ask either and I'm sure it could pretty feasibly be added.
Like you and others, I'd also be open to seeing all of the partners from Paper Mario 64 get cameos this time around. They were definitely planned to at one point given their unused sprites in the original game. I actually think this has a high chance of happening given the use of PM64's title theme in the trailer as well as the portrait of all the 64 partners from Super Paper Mario being added to this remake.
I'd also really appreciate if they gave some more context to the Smorg in this remake, perhaps some additional lore explaining its origins. Supposedly, there was meant to be a fight with the Shadow Sirens + Doo_liss in Riverside Station that was cut from the final game, which would have had a scene with Beldam summoning the swarm of Smorgs afterwards, so that would be really good to see, if only so that my boy Doo_liss can get more screen time.
Oh yeah, and I also hope for Ms. Mowz to be buffed so that I can treat her as the unofficial partner for Chapter 6, since she fits the atmosphere and settings of that chapter so well.
And of course, Paper Luigi: The Marvelous Compass could potentially make for a legendary side-campaign, but I think that might be asking too much. Still, there's always the fangame community for that!

Although this is far-fetched, I would love it if they expanded on the chapters with the most amount of backtracking (Chapter4, 5, and 7) by simply adding new areas for the player to explore, and re-writing the story of each chapter slightly to include them.
My biggest gripe with TTYD over Paper mario 64, one that I wish fans were harsh about, is the (excuse the frankness), dogshit and uninteresting level design. Despite being on much stronger hardware, TTYD levels almost never make good use of the Z-axis, with most of the game feeling like a typical 2D super mario bros level. The hallway level design here is a MASSIVE step back from the comparatively much larger, and much more interesting worlds in 64, and it's this flaw that produces the insane amount of backtracking in the game.
When comparing chapter to chapter, TTYD worlds are MUCH shorter than Paper mario 64, so in order to compensate, they padded out each chapter with either annoying mechanics in Chapter 2, or several minutes of backtracking in Chapters 4, 5 and 7.
Backtracking in TTYD is a symptom of a larger disease in the game's mediocre level design, with each Chapter being built around it. The only way in my opinion to fix this is to add new areas to many of the chapters to compensate for the loss of backtracking.

I agree with all of these changes less backtracking, boss rush of some kind or getting the chance to refight the bosses again adds more replayability like the Mario RPG remake, more badges and bringing back some of the badges back from 64 especially the spinner one where you will be able to move around the worlds quicker that would be nice, having the option to switch the soundtrack from the original to the remastered version just like the Mario RPG remake again would be nice, more side quests and a better way to access them, better AI of the puins for chapter 2, more cameos from 64, something to replay the Bowser levels instead of replaying the whole game again for it, And a playable Luigi story and side content would be the cherry on top but I think that is least likely to happen sadly but everything else would be game changing for the remake and hopefully most of those changes happen!

I never understood why they removed it to begin with but that kind of annoyed me because I always loved spinning around in Paper Mario 64 and I loved hitting enemies with it to 1 hit KO them once you're strong enough to do so. Also, I really hope they do what Bug Fables did and allow us to take on multiple side quests at once instead of just 1 at a time. I loved the side quests in TTYD but that was an aspect about doing them that I didn't like at all. I love TTYD, but I definitely can think of at least 10 things they can do to make this remake way better.

    *"What? I can't? What do you mean I can't?"*
*"Huh? I have play through the entire 30-hour game again on a new save file just to fight the Shadow Queen again?"*
*"But... That'll take so long! I wanna fight her again right now!"*

As I said in another video, I would love it if they did more with the Doopliss fight. In the original game, at the end of chapter 4, Doopliss faces us with every one of our old party. However, as soon as you defeat him, the fight ends, which is very likely to happen as he doesn't have a lot of HP. In the remake, I would like it if he was a bit more challenging. Maybe he can switch out with another party member when his health gets low, and force us to defeat our own party? Maybe the active party member can revive Doopliss, and you have no choice but to take out your whole party before you can take out Doopliss?

That last thing you'd love to happen in TTYD's remake, is one of my most desired inclusion in that remake. All we know of Luigi's adventure in that game, is what he told us about it (although he "exaggerates" details and intentionally leaves some out to make him look cool), what his partners told us about it, and the ingame purchasable books of someone having published stories about Luigi's adventure. We actually see none ourselves of what actually happened in full. And thus, we don't know what Princess Éclair looks like, nor the Chestnut King (I think was what the big bad called from Luigi's adventure?) as the franchise has never shown us what they look like, nor how they speak.
I long ago, saw a mock-up of what a game case cover art for a TTYD remake, would look like, while including "Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass" as a side campaign. Though not actually showing us what it's like. Mind you, that mock-up game case art was made AGES before the TTYD remake announcement. I've played this game several times. Admittedly, it's been a while since my last playthrough (I probably haven't played since the GCN days), but the backtracking just never occurred to me as a problem. So when people bring it up now, it always feels like a "OK, we gotta find SOMETHING to criticize TTYD on. Uhhhh...backtracking??"
But I dunno, if we insist on "fixing" the General White thing, maybe just add special warps. Like you talk to an NPC and he's like "Yo I'm going to _____" and you say "I'll come with" and then you're just there in the next location General White is supposed to be. (And then the NPCs don't show up anymore.) Something stupid like that. Otherwise I really don't think it's a big deal.
If they do actually remove steps from the General White thing, I do wish they'd have an option to do it the long way or the abridged way, just for the sake of having the original route intact. (I wish they'd done that for The Wind Waker HD for the Triforce shards too. Yeah, that part was tedious, streamlining it is probably good, but the original route should be available too as an option, just for the sake of history.)

There is a lack of harder difficulty options. There is this one badge that makes Mario take double damage and make him slower, but there is no bonus effect like more coins or something. How about rather than making a badge that gives no benefits, how about a hard mode, where Mario AND partners take double damage, more tricky enemies, with more health, more aggressive behavior on the overworld, etc. Outside of combat, they can change up overworld puzzles and make them harder! Maybe they can add new bosses to the hard mode and new awards! That would be awesome! This mode can be a serious gamechanger and really convince older players to get the remake.
The game also removed Chuck Quizmo, so there are so many really bad star piece locations. To fix this, I would bring back Chuck, where he would function the exact same way as he did in PM64, but after the 20th quiz, he opens a location on Rougeport where you can grind out the rest of the quizzes all in one location for a price, but you can still occasionally see him in towns for free.
The game NEEDS better camera angles that don't make the world look like a set of hallways. TTYD has so many memorable and interesting locations, it's such a shame that all the camera angles for each of these places look the exact same. This is an issue that has plagued every Paper Mario game (besides Origami King actually), but TTYD is the game where this is the most noticeable, I feel like.
The game should also let the player take multiple troubles (side quests) all at once. The fact that you can only do one at a time just perpetuates the issue of constantly backtracking in the game.
The game should also reward you for finding multiple recipes, and I feel like there should be multiple cooks throughout the game, so that it's more convenient to interact with the system. I believe partners should maybe have their own separate item inventory. It would add more strategy and you would be able to carry more items! Maybe 2-3 items per partner or for them to hold 10 but as a unit! That really could add some new strategies.
I think they need to rebalance some of the partners so that they don't have so much HP so that they aren't just meat shields, so let's give the player a consequence for putting the partners in front of Mario. Give them less HP or make them have vulnerabilities in combat sorta like Koops.
Something I would take from Origami King and Color Splash is the interactive world from those games, where it felt like every little object could be messed with. That was always kinda fun to play with. I also liked how expressive the characters of those games were, giving different facial reactions depending on what they were talking about. In TTYD, characters barely emote. Like, when the mafia find out that their boss is sick in TTYD, they sound worried, but look the same as always. Let's also make the characters interactive, where you can whack them with your hammer, but also spin at them and ground pound on them, where they each give a separate animation!
There is so much exposition in this game and it can be a little dull. If the characters reacted more to what they were saying, the dialogue would be less dull, but also how about show some more stuff on the screen when they are talking, so that it's more "show, don't tell"! Like, for instance, on the roof in Rogueport, there is a guy that tells you the lore of the game, but it's all a dialogue sequence, how about they turn that into a cut scene! There can be more instance of that too throughout the game I am sure too! Luigi's stories also come to mind! Recreated cutscenes for those would go such a long way!
In chapter 3, the enemy gauntlet is fun and all, but resting after each battle makes it too easy. If there is a hard mode, they should remove the ability rest maybe, or maybe make each encounter feel like a mini boss. Also, they should tell you what you will encounter beforehand so that you can create a badge setup beforehand. You can also repeat the whole chapter again for some reason that I never understood. Like, I don't know why they didn't even change it.
You forgot to mention the annoying back tracking you have to do in Chapter 5 as well. That needs to be fixed too.
Finally, as a bonus, it would be nice if they added more secrets, badges, optional locations, optional bosses, enemy variety, hidden challenges, side quests, and references to Super Paper Mario and Paper Mario 64 (like every partner from PM64 being hidden somewhere in the game in the post-game)! The original TTYD did have all of these things, but if the remake can not only maintain what was there before, but expand it, then I feel like this can be the ultimate Paper Mario game and perhaps one of Nintendo's greatest games of all time!

Hum.... I have to say it, I'm not a fan of just giving an optional warp to skip parts of the backtracking, because I feel that this create a different problem of replacing the most repatitive and tedius part of the game with less game. The whole criticism about backtracking is that the game is padding game time by making you travel to the same locations with the same enemies multiple times with nothing new to engadge the player. By removing the padding you sorda just have less game. Kinda like the if you are having a bologna sandwich where the bologna is stale, the solution isn't just removing it and just eating the bread slices empty. I don't know how much they are willing to change in the remake, but I honestly feel like the best solution is to *somehow* make the backtracking more fun. I don't know if that would mean make the enemies of each location changes for each backtracking or creating alternative paths and/or shortcuts that have more content and challagens to deal with, but simply skipping it dosen't feel like it would work.

There's a change that Gamexplain brought up in the remake and it may be rather controversial.
In the original japanese version and some other versions of the game like French, Spanish and Italian Vivian is trans, but in the english version she's just a girl. I wonder if the remake will be faithful to the japanese version or will they censor it again?
I know there's trans characters like Birdo and the Toads have been genderless since Captain Toad Treasure Tracker but I think it's probably okay to make Vivian trans now.

The game over sequence goes as it did in the gamecube original, but after the curtains close on Mario's corpse, a continue screen, similar to the one in Origami King, appears (ofc over the curtains instead of over a checkered background). If you choose the first option the curtains open up to Mario and his partner at the checkpoint. If you choose the second one, it would proceed like the original.

Unpopular opinion but, backtracking is a necessity... sure all of us as seasoned game/rpg players (who may have already played TTYD already) want to get to the point, BUT new players and I'm talking extremely new like first RPG ever new need the backtracking for a chance to grind and get levels to get strong enough to progress. A lot of new to RPGs casual players won't ever grind on their own before progressing or have the skills to beat things low level.

Grinding is barely needed for the game, and making it more grindy would just turn away many new players. There's no challenge in forcing people to do that, and it's a good think we've strayed away from that as time passes.

I'm personally really hoping they just don't fumble the bag with Vivian's story. I don't think they're going to re-localize the game and i especially don't think Nintendo of America would have the balls to make her canonically trans in the US version regardless, i just don't have faith in them to be willing to canonize that, sorry, especially in a remake where the localization was already done for them and they have not been given any reason to believe that they need to change it all these years later, but it would be nice even if they just gave some tiny sliver of a blurb that kind of sort of vaguely nudged people in that direction for her character, even if it's so ridiculously vague and inconclusive that most people can still easily deny it and it doesn't actually prove anything. That wouldn't be the most ideal outcome but i think it's the best we can hope for if we're gonna hope for Trans Vivian becoming canon in the US release.
I'm also hoping they at least update her portrayal in the original Japanese version. I've heard some people say that it's not handled well because they treat it in that really uncomfortable way that a lot of older japanese games handle supposedly trans female character where they say they're just confused "Men" who "Think" they're women and dress up as such. I don't think that will fly in the modern day with how much trans right and good portrayals in media are becoming a thing. Again i doubt they'll rewrite her story that much so i am not holding my breath for the transphobia of Vivian's sisters to be toned down at all but that is part of her story anyways. As long as they maybe change all the text that says she's actually a boy, again, they probably won't go all in on positive portrayal trans Vivian, but if they just call her a girl but Vivian's sisters belittle her and call her a man but the rest of the game is more respectful to Vivian and her identity and pronouns and all that, then maybe we'll be okay for the most part.
Again i don't think they're going to just go full on "Vivian is trans" uncensored and super respectful, i'm sorry, i'm a pessimist, i just don't see Nintendo trying to tackle that issue and instead skirting around it where they have to and just not bothering anywhere where they think they can get away with it, i kinda hope they prove me wrong and welcome it, but the very least i can hope for is that Nintendo makes some kind of effort to handle Vivian a bit more tastefully in the year 2024 and maybe if we're lucky, some bit of text in the US release is changed ever so slightly to kind of sort of hint at the idea that Vivian is maybe possibly trans possibly sorta but really we don't know at all because the text is so vague and doesn't really say anything conclusive but it's something at least.
