    Blake, I upgraded from the MOXF8 to the MODX8. I love everything except the transpose buttons. When you've transposed the keyboards in half steps (not octaves), there's no indication that the transpose function is active. No lights are on and there's no indication on the touch screen. The next update to the firmware should include a line of text at the top of the touch screen to indicate how many half steps are actively being transposed (it flashes on the touch screen for a few seconds and then goes away). Or, use half-bright lights on the up/down transpose buttons for half steps, in addition to the full-bright lights when octave transpose is active.

    Never understood why modern day keyboards don't have a phone style number pad (0-9) for fast input of a particular sound. Nowadays, you have go thru 3-4 clicks at a minimum to find a the instrument you want unless you have it programmed into a bank. If I want guitar sound #328, I should be able to just hit a sound button, then punch 328 and voila. Had that on my 35 yr old Kurzweil and don't understand why most keyboards don't have it today.

      yes i totaly aggree with you, i have made that same comment on many youtube videos. though the kronos, which i own, does have the 0-9 keypad you can select a no. on keypad and press enter to select the sound. but the kronos goes even further as it has a set list mode where you can access up to 128 perfomances [ combies] with only a few button presses and there are 128 banks of the set list function. also many roland keyboards have quick access buttons where you can quickly select 100 favorites. this problem is one reason that i dont buy many otherwise excelent keyboards, pericuarly wouldnt buy most anologe keyboards as most patch selection on most of them is turning a dial, and for me as a live player need quick access to many sounds, so i understan exactly what you are going on about..

    I bought this board and have only ONE gripe...the built-in sequencer. It's not as easy to operate, nor was the thought behind it the same as the Motif/MO series. I wonder why Yamaha changed the functionality of their built-in recording system? That's what I thought I was getting when I bought this board. But I do love the sounds. And I've finally gotten used to the recorder, but it really doesn't play as nice as the former series. Forget a step? And you have to start all over again. I can't even find how to save it in .wav form. It only saves in .midi unless you record in the single track .wav form. Why? I can simply do that in my computer's software package. Yamaha took some steps back on their internal recording piece with this board.

    Why doesn't Yamaha have samples of their iconic CP30 Electronic piano in their soundbank? There were two banks (left and right) each that had four sounds for a total of eight sound settings on the CP30 that you could select and combine in any combination. Yamaha could provide a sample of each of the individual eight sounds that the Montage/MODX user could then combine like on the CP30. That piano had much better sound than on any Rhodes piano.....

    @vanessajazp6341 Před 5 lety +4

    While I plan on buying one of these, the “Super Knob” strikes me as gimmicky and not as useful as designers may have had in mind. When you’re in the middle of an involved passage, you can’t take your hands off the keys to twist a knob! It’s size and placement make it an ideal item to get banged and broken in the process of taking to/from rehearsals and shows. Since all those functions can be assigned to an expression pedal that you’re more likely to use, I see it more as a sales gimmick than a tool that makes a musician’s life easier. That said, this board looks like it has all the right stuff for a gigging musician. Montage is obviously a bit better, but who wants to lug around a 63-pound instrument?

    • @kurtklingklang5918
      @kurtklingklang5918 Před 4 lety +2

      I take your point about the 'super knob'. And the first thing I'd do is to assign an expression pedal to replace its' use, on the whole. I haven't been able to see one in the flesh as yet, but all the video demo's seem to show the thing almost randomly flashing - nothing discernible in following the set tempo - fortunately you can turn down the brightness. I suspect the concept comes from the synth world, where swinging on the filter knob is a popular thing. The 'super knob' is a filter knob on steroids. The only thing holding me back in buying a MODX8 is the sequencer. I know Yamaha have just released an update that improves it over the original scratchpad, but it's still not as good as the sequencer on my MotifXS.

      I got the MODX 8 and I really have no use for that Super Knob in any live setting (so far). All my parameter changes are assigned to the foot pedal.
      The only problem I'm having with this is how to set it up to use the A/D input to control arpeggio tempo. I've looked through page after page of vague, incomplete descriptions, and one video that walks you through it, more or less, but so far I CANNOT get that to work. It has become beyond frustrating!

      By default, each part transmits/sends midi on its own midi channel - so really easy to use it as a 16 part multi-timbral sound module. There's also an option in utility>advanced where you can set all parts to send/receive on a single midi channel, which makes it easier to work as a single layered instrument.

      It's not as bad as it might seem - the dial works well, plus double-clicking on a value opens up a number pad which can make it quick for known values. For live patch tweaking, there's the assignable knobs and quick edit modes, which change values on a relative basis rather than changing the underlying patch values. As Blake mentioned, there's also quite a bit of redundant navigation, which helps to speed up getting to common sections from logical jump-off points. I'm not sitting here wishing I had a VST editor while I'm making patches.

    One more question. These keyboards are supposed to have "seamless" changing between sounds. When I am picking sounds from my User Live Set, sometimes they change seamlessly and sometimes they don't. Why is that?

    • @benskia
      @benskia Před 5 lety +1

      Only the sounds with less than 4 parts will seemlessly change. These are identified in the category screen with a little sss icon next to them. Near where FM-X and AM2 is shown.

    Couldn’t Yamaha have made the mobility features of this particular model even more appealing by including battery power? That would make it a sharp contender with the Roland V-combo and Juno models. Or did they, and I just haven’t taken sock in it yet?

    • @savanaviolenta
      @savanaviolenta Před 5 lety +5

      they are not the same features.MONTAGE has better converters,much more hands on controls,more polyphony on the FM synthesis and other goodies.Montage has metal chasis,MODX plastic,but so what,it depends on what you're looking for.MODX is very light weight,MONTAGE weighs a lot more,but I suppose for the majority of people out there the MODX is a GOD sent gift ,which will satisfy the needs of many.

    • @Paul_Y_T
      @Paul_Y_T Před 5 lety

      I've been pleasantly surprised at just how well it does analog sounds. it comes with some useful analog synth raw waveforms, and there are some more free ones on yamahasynth.com (the cs80 ones are very nice). The filters too are pretty impressive given this isn't being sold as a VA. Obviously you can't do fun stuff like oscillator sync and crossmod, but that is baked in to some of the raw samples.

      @Lajos:
      Thats a somewhat weird ending of your comment, considering that you must have taken the MODX for a reason, which I assume someone who knows what he is doing, for example would choose a MODX over a Montage for financial reasons, otherwise if one doesnt have to care about the price, might as well go with the expensive solution. But then you end it with commenting going to Nord, which is as expenisve on that level like Montage. Or even more. Doesnt really fit together your determination.
