Thank you for pointing out the differences in the glues. I just purchased the E6000 since so many folks were recommending it for jewelry repair. After watching your video, I am so glad I didn’t use it and will purchase the Gorilla gel. lol, yes I am not sure who started the rumor that it was the best, but we need to find them! When I started repairing pieces I thought it was suppose to be the best. I am so happy you will get the gorilla gel. I think you will really love the difference!

On the last 2 pieces, the blue clip earring and the Mazer pin, did you use the non ammonia glass cleaner on the paint brush, or did you just dry brush them? Sorry if I missed that part. Again, TFS. The on the mazer pin you can use the glass cleaner because they do not have the foil back, but on the blue clip on earring that has the foiled back I do not recommend using the glass cleaner. It can rub the backing off or if it does not do that I can discolor it. It may also be just fine, I just do not recommend liquid on the foil backs.

I don't care for E6000 either, I will pick up a bottle of gorilla gel and some of the other recommended supplies. Let's say you have a round brooch the back fell off, it is a solid 925 disc, what is your goto product for attaching the sterling to either stone or resin?
Yes, the E6000 seems to be a cult favorite, but I just do not feel it is the glue that works best. I would use the gorilla gel still or the two part epoxy gorilla glue. It is ok to use the thicker epoxy when doing something with larger pieces such as the backs of pieces, but I do not recommend the two part epoxy for smaller items because of the thickness. The gorilla glue gel will still hold very firm though. I love it because it really adheres well to most all surfaces in jewelry. I hope this helped.
Usually it is gold filled jewelry is marked or is suppose to be. It has a much thicker layer of gold. Gilt and plated is very thin and can be taken off with something as simple as a sunshine cloth.
Question is there anyway to replace the coating on glass faux pearls or anyway to replace the foil on the back of rhinestones ? Do they make any products for that ?
OMG, there is but jeez it is a very long and hard process. I do not recommend it if you can just buy the vintage one for any reasonable price. It is hard if you want to do it right. However, if you are just trying to fix it for yourself and not restore it to the original you can use pearlescent paint for the pearls coating. As for the foiling on stones, it is actually a chemical process done like plating gold onto another metal. You can put mirror paint on the back, but it does not work well and can get messy.
Gluing will just make you lose that piece. You can not glue metal to metal or it will fall off. There are adhesives that will allow metal to bond to other metal, but that is not any glue. When you find glue that says that it will be for something that is stationary and not meant to be handled much. Soldering is the best, but it can be difficult, dangerous, and ruin the piece if you are not skills at it. However, you can take two part epoxy resin and use that. It can create a permanent and secure bond. Just make sure to follow the direction exactly. NO GUESSING on measurements, lol, I did that before. It is a really alternative to soldering.
No no certain brand, I just suggest you get a vintage match instead of going with a brand name. Undrilled vintage faux pearl is what I would type in eBay or Mr. Rhinestone. You will be a able to find a perfect match from there.
I have a goldish brass color antique necklace that I thought was gold. I rubbed it on a testing stone and it is a silver color underneath. It also has verdigris so I'm not sure what to clean it with? I know it's not gold but whatever is making it the gold color, I don't want to ruin it trying to get the verdigris off. Thanks for any information or suggestion.
I am so sorry I am just getting to this. Test stones have a extremely fine grit that allows it to gather a specimen from the metal being tested. That being said it would take a gold wash or something like that off of a piece. To get the verdigris off using some down and a soft toothbrush should work. Let me know!
You put a dab of it on the Q-tip and rub it on the piece that you suspect is Bakelite. Make sure that the piece is washed first though because it can pick up that dirt and give you kind of a false positive. The color will look like sort of a nicotine yellow if you’ve ever seen that or like a brownish yellow on the QTip
Do you have any tips on how to replace large cabachons? I've seen people use 2 part epoxy, but wanted your take on that particular glue. Would Gorilla glue suffice? Also, I have a piece I'm trying to restore, but the rhinestones are glued in so well they won't come out no matter what I do. I tried soaking in boiling water, but those blighters are stuck fast. Any suggestions?
Who sometimes rhinestones are glued in with superglue and boiling water won’t even take those out so depending on the finish of the piece, you may need to do some chipping away at the surface to allow water to get in there and sometimes acetone can help with superglue, but also if you have a little bit of mineral oil to play on it every once in a while That can help chemically damage to allow them to be loosened. I would be happy to take a look at it if you would like to send a picture to my email address and I could help a little bit better.
@@saveyourselves5923 also, the adhesive you use is usually or can usually be set upon your preference and your needs. I prefer the gorilla glue for most of my jobs. It allows for better precision, faster setting and it still gives just as strong as a hold to me now the differences is if you have something very heavy or in a really odd weird shape can actually be beneficial, but it does take a long time to set and even the five minute ones that set in like five minutes they’re not completely harden for like 48 hours. You have to be careful not to allow Dustin stuff in them so that’s the reason I prefer the gorilla glue and it’s still good for a large cabin, because most cabins aren’t very large so you can use the gorilla glue but once again it’s all preference you can use it. I just find that the gorilla glue is already a two-part glue that has to be shaken very well to make sure it has that strong hold while epoxy you can have Miss steps and mixing it and all other things things so I prefer the gorilla glue but part of epoxy is good as well.
Yes, but not on plated jewelry. It will remove the plating or enamel. It can also scuff stones if you push to hard. I have used it to remove seriously deteriorated plating and enamel. It is also good on pot metal.
Simichrome can be put on a q tip. (Just a dab) and rubbed on the inside or back of the piece you suspect is Bakelite. The qtip will turn yellow (ranges from light to dark). Usually looks like a nicotine yellow. Make sure the piece is clean because you do not want the test to fail because of dirt or grim. I can do a sure tutorial over it. It is the only way I can tell. I can never tell from things like 409 or smelling it. I hope this helps
Gilt Silver, Vermeil, and Gold over Silver are usually pretty interchangeable in this world. I know there are slight differences but it basically means gold over silver. The difference is usually the microns of gold plating.

I need to get new glues after seeing that. What brand do you have for glass cleaner, I don’t ever remember seeing one without ammonia. Thanks.
I just use windex ammonia free. I find it at Walmart. The generic brand works just as well. On the front of the bottle it will say Ammonia free.

@@saveyourselves5923 also, the adhesive you use is usually or can usually be set upon your preference and your needs. I prefer the gorilla glue for most of my jobs. It allows for better precision, faster setting and it still gives just as strong as a hold to me now the differences is if you have something very heavy or in a really odd weird shape can actually be beneficial, but it does take a long time to set and even the five minute ones that set in like five minutes they’re not completely harden for like 48 hours. You have to be careful not to allow Dustin stuff in them so that’s the reason I prefer the gorilla glue and it’s still good for a large cabin, because most cabins aren’t very large so you can use the gorilla glue but once again it’s all preference you can use it. I just find that the gorilla glue is already a two-part glue that has to be shaken very well to make sure it has that strong hold while epoxy you can have Miss steps and mixing it and all other things things so I prefer the gorilla glue but part of epoxy is good as well.

Can magic erasers be used on costume jewelry?
Yes, but not on plated jewelry. It will remove the plating or enamel. It can also scuff stones if you push to hard. I have used it to remove seriously deteriorated plating and enamel. It is also good on pot metal.
how do you use it to test bakelite?
Simichrome can be put on a q tip. (Just a dab) and rubbed on the inside or back of the piece you suspect is Bakelite. The qtip will turn yellow (ranges from light to dark). Usually looks like a nicotine yellow. Make sure the piece is clean because you do not want the test to fail because of dirt or grim. I can do a sure tutorial over it. It is the only way I can tell. I can never tell from things like 409 or smelling it. I hope this helps

What is gilt silver
Gilt Silver, Vermeil, and Gold over Silver are usually pretty interchangeable in this world. I know there are slight differences but it basically means gold over silver. The difference is usually the microns of gold plating.

lol, yeah, I practiced a lot before I started on higher end pieces. Mostly on broken things and cheap ones. It eventually gets easier.
