NFTs in Gaming: A Scam or a Solution?

  • The problem with NFT and blockchain games is that everything they offer can already be done - and already is being done - without NFTs or blockchain even existing.
We take a look at some of the most common arguments in favour of using NFTs, blockchain and crypto in video games and explain how those things can already be done, are already being done, and give examples of those existing implementations. We also define what NFT and blockchain are and give a real-world metaphor for how this... interesting relationship would look if an NFT were a real-world item.
This video is specifically about NFTs and blockchain's proposed uses in the gaming space and not an attempt to analyse or critique NFTs, blockchain or crypto as a general concept. A video about NFTs in general would need A LOT more time to discuss in detail, but good news is that someone has already done that and I strongly recommend you watch "Line Goes Up" by Folding Ideas if you have any interest in NFTs at all - don't be put off by the length, that time is completely justified by the wealth of content in the video:

I wanted to make this video *specifically about video games* and not NFTs in general. Whilst I think the technology is interesting, it's the unfortunate truth that the amount of people involved in NFTs because they're genuinely interested in the technology vs those who are in it to extract as much money as possible before the bubble bursts... It's just skewed way too far towards the money-milkers. Besides, the important take away is that, despite the technology, no one has come up with an actual useful idea for it in gaming that can't already be done (and is already being done) and that's what this video is about.

NFT (the tech itself) is a great concept and do has it's uses.
In fact i would be in big trouble if some high importence application blockchains that i depend on would not exist.
For example I depend on My ONS names to do daily business with many different parties that should not know my central or a shared identity. And those ONS names are stored on the you guessed it, blockchain as a NFT

One big thing people overlook about the security and set in stone nature of blockchain is that any piece of code inside the blockchain is MUCH harder to patch or update. Imagine if someone finally made a game that was entirely in the blockchain, all of it's code was put into different blocks and it all references itself from within the chain, but, uh oh, you found an exploit and you need to patch it... oh wait, how would you do that?
From one example I saw, the developer of a simple NFT lootbox masquerading as a game have to "burn" all of the existing tokens people paid for and give them brand new ones because he found a bug in his smart contract. He couldn't just patch the existing code body, he had to pull it down and remint all of those tokens, at his own expense I think.
All of the potential benefits of NFTs in games are pipedreams that require game devs and companies to suddenly shift to a VERY pro consumer market model and hurt themselves financially in the process. People always say "imagine if your ownership of a digital game was an NFT and you could trade it to someone else when you're done with the game" or whatever, that would require companies to do the exact opposite of what they've been trying to do with digital games, which is lock them to your account and not allow you to resell them. WHY would a developer ever willingly do that? They wouldn't lol.

No microtransactions, no memberships, no nothing.

I enjoy the item economy from tf2 and csgo, but i really don´t understand why any other companies didn´t make economies and online markets like Valve did. Maybe they did not have the time to buildup something like this, so my main guess is why gaming companies try to push NFTs into games is because it is an easy gateway for them to start an economy and marketplace inside their games, since all the transactions can be held on the blockchain they want to use.

    • @tippyc2
      @tippyc2 Před 2 lety +40

There's similar economies in some MMOs. You have a good point though, Valve created a roadmap for in-game economy that works. It starts with common item drops to get you hooked, and give F2P a way into the market. Then it progresses to lootbox style microtransactions for items ranging from uncommon to uber-rare. Difference between that and the shit EA pulls is that you can then go and trade the lootbox items, so if you really want a specific weapon skin, you can just go buy it instead of rolling the dice and crossing your fingers. It also helps that they allow trades to use real-world money, not just in-game money.

At that point you could point to your NFT and say "Hey, I DID have that item at one point, and here's proof." I imagine this could also be done somehow without NFTs, even if the non-forgeable nature of the NFT itself might make it slightly more secure.

A lot of the hype around NFT's must be one of two things:
    1. Bandwagoning the next trend until it's popularity drops
    2. Greed, and a willingness to exploit people who fall into the previous category for easy money
That isn't to say that this is all encompassing and that there's no legitimate potential to the concept, but what it is right now is rather unrealized and ultimately pointless at best and a scam at worst.

6:47 actually its very hard to change that part of the NFT, because its being checked and re-checked over many computers its almost impossible to change the actual NFT. Someone made an NFT that actually included code for some kind of app, and it had a serious bug in it, the people who made the NFT had no ability to fix it because it was already on the block chain. another point against the "uniqueness" of NFTs:
most CS:GO skins have unique pattern IDs, that determine how the pattern on the skin is rotated, moved, etc.
it goes even further on specific skins, like case hardened, where any and all pixels on the affected parts of a gun can be a different color from the rest of the skin, and usually, the more blue is present on a case hardened skin, the more it is worth
(there's also the dick knife, which, as you could tell from its moniker, is a knife with a dick pattern on it)
same goes for TF2 war paints, though it's usually mostly just the rotation and placement of the pattern, but there are some easter eggs that require specific patterns to be visible

During difficult to follow booming trends/politics I like to abide by “reading the room” as a method to break down intent on any given side.
For NFTs, every business person/student and companies from all fields were getting REALLY excited, to the point that they were publicly advertising the “business potential” with no mention of actual gain on the consumer side of things. It’s a scam. Plain and simple. Just the next step in a story of micro transactions and unfinished products with gambling built-in.
Basically, if companies ever get really excited on business and business alone, don’t trust it.

14:42 this is the dumbest one. While maybe in a few decades an NFT will be able to have enough storage to *maybe* just perhaps, accomplish this, assuming it can tap into some kind of already standardized thing, such as idk Unity humanoid rigs, then maybe *just freaking maybe* it would work. I could see a whole host of bugs arising however. And even then im sure it could be done in other ways, other than via an NFT. Because this concept isnt just that it would be a feature in one or two games, but that the NFT itself could implement cosmetics directly into the game. Since NFTs are technically code, it is technically possible. But just not practical in any way, especially with where the technology is right now.

Not providiing an alternative for people who paid for the ownership of a copy of yours game shoulnt be accepted as something that just happens and should have legal precedent in favor of the consumer. Even giving the means for the players dedicated enough to keep private servers or to alter the game to be still be in playable state after being aboned by its owner would be a massive improvement.

game studios don't make enough money to do that. Most games sell for 60 dollars a pop on launch, and they make LOTS of money towards the beginning of the game's lifespan almost always, but there is rarely a constant stream capable of outweighing the cost of upkeep. With some exceptions of course, some games have had dedicated fanbases large enough to financially support the studios long after most games usually die, but studios need a revenue STREAM to pay their employees, not just a big burst of cash followed by 30 years of server upkeep. it's the exact reason why you never see a large scale game company just make one game and base their entire revenue on that, they need new projects released every 2-3 years at most in order to keep a proper cash flow.
