It’s not that Ali didn’t know what odd and even numbers are, he just didn’t know what the words meant in Korean because even though he speaks the language very well he’s still not completely fluent
The fact that he was an illegal immigrant and the reason he was in the game was because he was taken advantage of by his employers... And to go out being betrayed like that
i agree! sang woo underestimated him because of that. But given that he speak 3 languages, he has to be smart and have some level of education. Whats "odd" and "even"? yea, what is that in Korean. We know understand what it is in our native tongue, but a language where you wouldn't normally have to, its obvious he wouldnt know.

Right! Actually, Ali's Korean was described as a little awkward throughout the drama. So I think it would've been better if the translation had described as if his english is a little awkward.

We knew Ji-yeong’s character for the least time but she broke me the most, her life was literally abuse, seeing her mum dead, ending her father, prison then death… and she went out saving someone and with a smile on her face. I can’t, I was a mess with her!

@@bryancarol3219 Incorrect. Gi-Hun did indeed cheat the old man but you could clearly see it was messing with him to do so. He didn't want to, he HAD to, because he knew the old man was already dying and he still wants to take care of his daughter and mother with diabetes.
Sang-woo on the other hand showed absolutely ZERO remorse, a true selfish person.
You cannot compare the two in the slightest despite the same circumstance.

Honestly, I watched rush hour and rush hour 2 so many times that I memorized the script by heart so hearing him say those references knowing that I’ve grew up watching rush hour has been like sunshine in my heart

It hurts more when you understand that SangWoo told Ali in earlier episodes that he could call him “Hyung” which means older brother. That’s why he would take care of him in the beginning because it’s very cultural in Korea to take care of those younger than you like siblings even if they’re not related. But unfortunately Sangwoo at the end only cares about himself and Ali was too trusting and he also wasn’t fluent in Korean so he got fooled easily 😔
The more I think about it the more I feel like sang woo kind of preyed on Ali because he could tell Ali was kind and a sort of people pleaser. Ppl like sang woo prey on good people to take advantage of them. Ali was the perfect partner for the games - physically strong and easy to manipulate.

When you realize Ali was desparately calling out to Sang-Woo like a lost younger brother - his death hits way harder.
When you realize Ji-yeong, who had nobody close to talk to all her life, say she is honored to meet you (genuine/sincere) - her death hits way harder.
I was sad for Ali, but the young girls death hit me harder. Imagine being that young with that background and going to jail for killing your abuser and then sacrificing your life because you feel you have nothing to live for. That was so heart-wrenching to hear and each time I watch it still makes me cry. No young person should feel life is not worth living.
The reason why Ali didn't understand "odd" and "even" is that he is a foreigner so his Korean isn't as fluent as others.

I think because they've probably never lived in another country before so they've never had that experience. Plus the subtitles don't really make it clear that his issue is the language barrier.

Ali knows what even and odd are; he didn’t understand the Korean words for even and odd. Remember, it’s not his native tongue. Just like when he didn’t understand the Korean phrase for “boot camp” and used Urdu word for “circle.”

Rush hour must be Jeff’s favorite movie
Ali called Sang Woo "Hyung" the whole time which means "older brother" and is someone whom you trust fully which is why he acted the way he did. He was a little bro who looked up to his older brother with everything he had and trusted everything he said which makes the betrayal even worse. Sang Woo knew exactly what he did which is why he was too cowardly to turn around.
But the thing is and what’s makes it worse is that Ali won the game he literally won and he was going to walk away and think about his family but shangwoo started doing that crying act and throwing shit in Ali face because he helped him
You definitely watch Rush Hour before watching Squid Games everytime 🤣

I knew this episode would break you guys. Everybody cried during this episode. And Ali was too good for this world. A cinnamon roll that didn't deserve what Sang Woo did.

its so interesting how you guys say Sangwoo is the worst but that you'd do the exact same thing as GiHun and lie to save yourself. Theyre both trying to survive just like u said but apparently one's 'scheming' is more evil and sinister but the other's lying is more 'accepted' bc the otehr person had dementia and a terminal illness. They were both in the exact same position. This show's complexity is so interesting.
I think the main difference between what Sang-woo and Gi-hun did is that Gi-hun actually feels terrible about what he’s doing, Sang-woo showed pretty much no remorse. To me it kind of made me feel like what he was doing was a little more grimy.
I don't think they were in the same position. The man is old and has dementia so it's makes sense that Gihun who still has a family and a mom to provide for should survive in this situation. Also Gihun has shown during the show that he has feelings and cares about people wich is the reason why he picked the granpa as a teammate in the first place. With Sangwoo and Ali is a completely different situation because Sangwoo has shown his true colors many times and always cared only about himself. Also i think that Ali had more to loose because he also had a newborn baby and a family to take care of while Sangwoo doesn't have a family and he carelessly put his mom in a difficult situation by investing all of his money and getting into debt.
@@jadaguerre7795 You can see him flinch when Ali is shot, it's not like he didn't care at all, he's just very good at discociating and using his head over emotions which makes his action seem more "grimy". He's more calculating than Gihun.

Anyone who doesn’t get emotionally screwed by this episode has no soul :P When I originally watched it, I’m not ashamed to admit that I cried. Probably the most emotionally intense episode of the entire season.

FYI : Kkakdugi(깍두기) originally means diced radish kimchi(you can find it basically in 80% of Korean restaurant), but it also means the one kid left behind from the game for some reason. Mostly they are too bad at the game, or they are too young to play.
Mostly they get to play the game with some advantages. They can play in the both sides, or older kids make younger kid Kkagdugi and teach them how to play. For example, Kkagdugi only can play in minor, supporting role until their skill get better. Minyeo stayed outside as the spectator and was given great advantage.

Oof, yeah, this episode had me in tears by the end, it hit so hard on a few different levels. I gotta say, the tension levels of this show are genius. They maintain the balance so well, even the slower parts keep me entranced because you never know what you need to know or why you're being told this stuff, and when it comes to the team, you care to find out more. It's such a mindfxck, and a heartfxck, for that matter. My Spousey and I had to watch the beginning of the VIPs episode just so we didn't stop on Gganbu's ending, because I was Not Okay.
