In Utero Is Nirvana's Best Album

  • There's not much to say about Nirvana that hasn't already been said a million times. They were a massively successful and influential band, changing the face of rock music in their short seven year run. Frontman Kurt Cobain has been widely renowned for his artistry and is viewed as a musical and cultural icon. 1991's Nevermind was the band's breakthrough album, selling over 30 million copies throughout the years and is known for popularizing the term "grunge". This, to many, is the band's best album. But in this video, I defend 1993's In Utero, Nirvana's final studio release.
To me, In Utero is Nirvana's best album.

In Utero is my favorite Nirvana album as well, there's not a single second of it that I don't like, the guitar tone is so original, I never heard a distorted guitar tone that sounded like that before, Kurt's raw vocals sound amazing as well, Dave is such an amazing drummer and the way Steve miked it was trully great. For me it's the combination of the best everybody could do, and I love it for that

The record is raw but in a controlled manner, if you catch my drift. It could have been heavier but apparently Cobain did not want to go all the way and punctuated it with more radio friendly, moody tracks to compensate for the rawer moments. Too bad the history of the band ends here as we do not know how they might have progressed as nirvana musically. I especially mean Grohls drumwork, which shows some promise for forthcoming albums that never came. Sure, Grohl is still in the industry and he graced us with some more of his drumming skills. But I would be especially I terested in how his drum play could have complemented the rest of the band Nirvana, in that particular line up

I think Dave would’ve quit or been fired eventually because I think he wanted to flex his songwriting skills but who knows ? I think Dave would’ve wound up doing his own thing anyway maybe not the Foo Fighters but he would’ve done something he had too many songs in him to remain behind the drums with very little of his ideas making it to an album.

Most Nirvana fans don’t actually understand just how much Courtney influenced Kurt on In Utero, yet they like to assume that Kurt wrote all her songs for her. If you delve deeper into both artists history, you will easily see how Courtney has a amazing talent for writing just about anything, while Kurt was a very talented melodist.
It’s evident, especially on Bleach and Nevermind, that Kurt’s style of writing lyrics was basically a word salad. Write some lines that sound cool, and make it cryptic as hell. Like Come As You Are for example: the lyrics mean absolutely nothing, yet he says it with such feeling that we feel it too. With him, you actually had to try and break down what he was trying to say, wonder what he meant, which in most cases, was nothing. But his melodies were always great, even if they ripped off other songs, he made it his own.
Courtney on the other hand, if you go back to her pre-Live Through This work, (her short lived band Pagan Babies’ 4-track demotape from 1985, early Hole singles, and Pretty On The Inside), you will notice that Courtney was f•••ing great at writing, not just lyrics, but actual poetry, at a Leonard Cohen or Bob Dylan level of genius but always from a female perspective. Her poetry was very direct and in your face, tackling subjects like violence against women, rape, abortions, and beauty standards set for women and what it does to a girl’s sense of self. The one thing that stopped her from reaching the height that Nirvana reached was that she wasn’t great at melody. She needed a collaborator to understand her vision and help it along, which turned out to be Eric Erlandson (most of Hole’s riffs were written by Erlandson, though Nirvana fans love to credit Kurt as a ghostwriter on all of Hole’s work, which is terrible and false as hell).
After nearly two years of sharing a journal with his wife, in which they wrote poetry together, Kurt’s lyrics on In Utero were vastly different from his prior work. There were far less cryptic lyrics and WAY more abrasive and direct content. For example: Verses on on the first track alone, Serve the Servants, are really direct about how Kurt felt about fame, his relationship with his father, and his parents divorce. One song in and it’s already deeper than his previous two albums. Another example is Heart-Shaped Box: the verse “I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black” is very similar to Courtney’s verse “I want a cancer that the crooked eye spun; baby I burn black for you”. Kurt has said he collaborated with Courtney on Pennyroyal Tea. I know there’s a demo from, I wanna say like 1990, of the song but it doesn’t feature most of the feminist lyrics that are on the final version.
This is all just an example of the fact that is wasn’t only Kurt who influenced Courtney but that she also influenced him just as much, and we should start recognizing it instead of ignoring it.

'1991s Nevermind is nearly always referred to as the bands best album.' That's because it is the bands best album, by far (imho). In terms of songwriting and sound quality I would rank the 4 major Nirvana albums in the following order from best to worst: Nevermind, Incesticide, In Utero, Bleach. If you want to listen to a rough, dark, gritty, raw energy Nirvana album, Incesticide delivers that more authentically than In Utero.

In utero is my favourite record of all time, I love everything about it. I do however, hate how people label this album as ‘disturbing’ or ‘dark’ I think that grossly exaggerated and a simplistic way to look at the album especially in utero. I find the term ‘melancholic’ overused but it is a good word to describe all apologies, it’s reflective and leaves me feeling introspective. I think that song is happy overall but has a more complex tone to it, people just attach it to his suicide and call it disturbing which I think is dumb. Good video though.

Smells Like Teen Spirit was a joke song written to make fun of Boston’s More Than A Feeling, and Godzilla by Blue Oyster Cult

Except BOCs catalog totally smokes any Nirvana. I like both but gotta give credit.
