- Thank you for watching! The Mario Kart series does a fantastic job of capturing that wintry atmosphere with its wide array of icy courses, complete with charming visuals and music ranging from cozy to intense. The N64 duo have been longtime favorites of mine, and the theme shared by Frappe Snowland and Sherbet Land has always made me happy to listen to - I hope this rendition will bring you a bit of joy, as well! 😊
In this remix, I wanted to capture the bright and festive feeling of the original, while adding a bit of extra energy and sparkle to the mix. This is an arrangement that I'm particularly proud of, and it incorporates some references to other chilly tracks from the franchise - five, to be exact! You'll find these East- ...er, Christmas eggs starting in the second lap, and there are some hints in the visuals, too, so keep an eye out for those!
I'm continually motivated and inspired by the many talented and hard-working artists in the community, and @bronistevoni has long been an exemplar, with his knack for creating detailed, robust, and professional-sounding music. The man has an unparalleled degree of musicality, and both his original compositions and arrangements are sure to leave you in awe. Fans of Mario Kart music in particular are in for a treat, as he has several remixes from the series, including an original in the style of MK! Oh my gosh, the amount of _chills_ my spine felt from those first five seconds...your intros are truly the best! First off just want to say wow the artwork here by Kali is just stunning, all the fun costumes for the racers are just perfect! ❄
Don't have too much time to leave a comment as lengthy, but I have to mention your visuals in this video are literally bringing me to tears - watching the video go from day to night, with those vibrant neon pictures of DK, Rosalina, Shy Guy, and even the PENGUIN!!! Those remind me so much of playing on Rainbow Road for the first time, seeing all the neon Mario characters floating in the background while racing; you absolutely took me back to those days with a new fresh perspective. Of course, can't forget the "Come visit Vanilla Lake"! haha, that was a very nice touch!
Overall such a beautiful remix to the winter courses form MK64, and a perfect one to start the wintery season! The mix is perfect, the percussion is bright & punchy; I could easily listen to this and either get my groove on or simply as background music. Bravo, my friend!! 👏👏👏

I'm psyched to hear that the intro was impactful for you! Intros are admittedly quite tricky for me, and I generally feel much more confident with arranging endings than I do with creating arranged intros. But receiving this kind of feedback from you is a huge deal for me, and I appreciate your saying so! That definitely makes me feel like I'm on the right track, and I'll keep working towards improvement in the intro department especially! :D
Thank you also for the commentary regarding the mixing and percussive elements in particular! It's encouraging to hear that you felt the mix was well-balanced here, and - like with the intro aspect - makes me feel like I'm hitting the mark there. It was fun being able to use some specifically "wintry" percussive elements here, like tambourines, sleigh bells, wind chimes, and icy impact sounds, and I'm happy to hear that they came across as bright and energetic in the way I hoped they would. This kick sample in particular is one of my new favorites ("ACEAURA - Chesty" from Splice), and I love that it has a prominent top end to complement the deep body.
Kali and I are very grateful for your kind remarks regarding the visuals, and we're delighted that you enjoyed them! I have to admit, I myself was blown away when Kali first showed me the holiday-styled designs she had for the different racers, and how they correspond to iconic characters from Christmas songs and whatnot.
And I am genuinely touched to hear that seeing the neon lights was a nostalgic and joyful experience for you! 😊 I don't think there's a single person out there who wasn't wowed by the visuals of Rainbow Road when playing that iconic MK64 stage for the first (or hundredth) time. When Kali and I were brainstorming ways to create visual hints to correspond with the reference segments, we thought of including objects from those courses, but then one day I came home from work, and she had a set of stunning neon lights drawn, and was so excited to implement them into the video. All props go to her for the design and concept, and again, we sincerely appreciate your mention of those visual details.

Man this takes me back to MK64 😃
Cold winter night, driving over to my cousin's for a sleepover with the N64 bundled up in a plastic bag. We spent HOURS playing N64 and eating pizza.
Smash, Zelda , Pokemon Stadium but nothing came close to the high octane mario kart races!
Even my older cousin would join in on the fun, he'd always pick Todd as he called him 😂
I still remember how fitting racing on Sherbert Land was that night. We were all amped up on sugar and greasy pizza. My 2 cousin's, playing Todd and Yoshi and me as Mario... Because Yoshi was already taken 😒
I still remember looking out the window as it started snowing and you see everyone's decorations lighting up the street.
The music, the atmosphere, the screeching of my cousin as I threw the blue shell at him.
For a short moment I felt this deep sense of joy and warmth before my cousin smacked my controller out of my hand.
Sherbert Land's theme will forever be my go to winter music. It brings me back to that night of pure joy (and chaos!)
You've both done an exceptional job on this remix. The upbeat music is just so calming to hear. And Kali's art really sticks out here.
Especially the night lap, my gosh! I had this wave of nostalgia of when we first saw rainbow road. We all just shut up and took it in.
The beautiful (64x64) portraits of those iconic characters. The flashing colours , the music. It all just "fit"
Your video reminds me of all that and I couldn't be more happy to experience it.

Honestly, just seeing you describe that scenario of spending the night at a friend/relative's house just got me so amped up. Some of my literal best memories are of sleepovers where we'd break out the N64 or Gamecube and just play our hearts out, complete with copious amounts of junk food. That is truly the absolute _pinnacle_ of childhood! And man, if you didn't bring the game system, controllers, games, and cables in a plastic supermarket bag, you just weren't doing it right. Extra points if the bag had a small tear in it that made you worry the whole time. 😂
Between Smash Bros., Diddy Kong Racing, the Mario sports games, Pokemon Stadium [2], Mario Kart, and a host of other N64 classics, there was no shortage of high-quality multiplayer games to play. It's funny, too, how so many running jokes originate from shared video game experiences, like the emergence of Todd (that's gonna stick with me, by the way). And I can totally relate to the fierce competition to play as Yoshi! My friends and I would legit get upset if we weren't able to play as Yoshi, but the Bros. did make for solid second and third picks. It was only later, in college, where I started to really love playing as Bowser (and Dry Bowser in later iterations) because he's such a ridiculous brute. XD
It makes me so happy to know that this remix could help you to relive those memories in such a fond and nostalgic way - from the quiet falling of snow, to the unnerving siren of an oncoming Blue Shell, to the shriek of a player who's about to get it. While the time leading up to Christmas is indeed a very special time, no one can argue that the weeks that follow can be just as exciting, with newfound access to games that were received as presents! I remember getting Mario Kart 64 using money I got for Christmas, and that first night playing it with my older brother was absolutely magical. ✨
And yes, Rainbow Road was - and still is - just stunning, and the N64 design is still one of my favorites, with the neon lights being a big reason for that (and of course the music)! Kali and I were thinking of different items we could incorporate into the video to correspond with the musical references to other wintry Mario Kart themes, and one day she just surprised me with a set of 5 gorgeously drawn neon lights! She knew I loved neon light designs in general, but the connection with N64 Rainbow Road was an unintended and serendipitous bonus!

I'm stupid lucky to be able to work with a talented artist on each video, and it's something that I really want to be a defining feature of the channel. Your remarks regarding the mixing are very encouraging, as that was one aspect that I really focused on trying to get as good as I could. There were quite a few mid-high and high range instruments here, and I worried that they might be competing too much at certain points, but seeing you describe it as such is huge for me.
I appreciate your mention of the artwork, as well! Huge props to Kali for her winterized designs of the racers, and for recreating the Frappe Snowland environmental pieces, alongside new features like the neon lights. There were so many pieces to work with that it was a bit daunting at times, but ultimately a fun challenge. I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the art here!

I totally know what you mean, regarding the penguins! I wonder if somehow the penguins from Cool, Cool Mountain and Snowman's Land made their way to the world of Mario Kart - considering the distances penguins are able to migrate, I wouldn't doubt it! And considering Peach's castle is a real location in MK64, it feels like even more of a possibility. Regardless, it's always fun to see a variety of characters show up throughout different games in a franchise - I live for those little Easter eggs!

It warms my heart tremendously that you kept an ear out for the musical references here, and you did a brilliant job identifying them. Seriously, your knowledge of the series' music is remarkable, that you even picked out those short phrases in the ending, too! The Rosalina's Ice World segment in particular is something that I wasn't sure people would recognize, but I'm so glad you did!
And what's more, you also found resemblance in places I hadn't thought of, like the response parts at 0:12, 0:20, and 0:27. I included those because I felt like that descending pattern in the bells sounds a bit like that famous clock tower jingle, which feels cheery and wintry to me - but I can definitely hear the similarities to Snow Land there! DK Summit/Snowboard Cross and Merry Mountain are both tracks that I considered, but they proved difficult to incorporate, with their fast-paced and majestic arrangements. It's awesome that you found parts that felt reminiscent of those tracks, though! For real, it always gets me so excited when people comment on the referenced bits, and I'm grateful that you took the time to listen carefully for them and timestamp them in your comment. Yeah, I felt like the GBA Snow Land bits at 0:12, 0:20, 0:27 were a bit of a stretch, but they did sound strikingly similar to bits of that song. Regardless, it adds to that winter-y vibe of the masterpiece!
Absolutely the art, animation, and effects helped to heighten the masterpieces a lot! Not just in this one, but in your other ones too (with the Luigi's Mansion one being arguably my favorite from you). Shoutout to Kali for her artistic talent shown off here!

Indeed, Bowser is taking on the role of a Christmas tree - whether willingly or not, I was tickled to see him strung with lights and even a star. 😁 Your mention of "The Little Drummer Waa" made me legit laugh out loud - that was great! XD I can totally see how Wario would fit the part of Scrooge, especially given his money-hoarding nature. Frosty the Snowman was an inspiration here, as well, but I love the idea of Scrooge - that's brilliant!
Similarly, the play on words with Toad being the spirit of Christmas "Present" is fantastic, and puts much more life into the idea than just him being a present, as we had initially thought. And you're spot on with Peach - Kali was just going for a cute wintry design, but your mention of the ghost of Christmas Past fits perfectly!
We had to go with Nintendo's main man Mario taking the role of the big guy himself, and your portmanteau of Luigi's name and role is great! And last but certainly not least, Yoshi is definitely channeling Rudolph as Mario Claus' most reliable rein-dino!

Thanks so much for watching, and for taking the time to comment. :D I'm tickled that you pointed out a possible Grand Dad reference, and while it wasn't my intent to do so, I do hear similarities there! 😅 For the phrase that responds to the main melody (at 0:11, 0:19, & 0:27), I primarily wanted to have a variation on that iconic "bell tower" song - the one that usually plays each hour on large bell towers - since I tend to associate them with Christmas and winter in general.

Ah man, that's a compliment like no other! I've for a long time now wanted to create a remix that captures the _excitement_ aspect of wintry-sounding VGM - like a fresh, icy blast of air - and seeing your feedback in that regard is so encouraging. And don't get me wrong, I dearly love music that falls into the cozier, warmer end of the winter VGM spectrum, but there's something specific about icy race courses that just thrills me to the core. ^_^ To be honest, it was a really close call, deciding whether to do this song or Walrus Cove, but the latter definitely has not been dismissed!
Dude, I am _so_ psyched that you mentioned the Snow Land reference - thank you for that!! 😁 Surprisingly, it had great synergy with Frappe Snowland/Sherbet Land right out of the box, so it worked really well as a countermelody in the second lap - it's such a fun and festive tune, and I'm glad you liked it so much!

And I can't even express fully what it means to see you remark on the increasing complexity of videos - thank you for that! In truth, I worry sometimes that I'm setting myself up for disaster (or burnout) down the road by trying to up the ante each year, since the amount of time I have available to work on videos has remained relatively stagnant. Fortunately, I've become quite a bit more efficient with the video editing program I use (which is the same program I use for the music production, FL Studio), so that helps to offset the more elaborate animations. But rambling aside, your constantly cheering us on has been hugely motivating, and it's a big part of what keeps me wanting to work towards continual improvement with the visuals!

This music is one of my favorites from the Mario Kart series, and listening to one of your remixes is still so cool!
So there, the visuals are just perfect. I'm impressed by your work, especially since you only do them on the ZGEV. I don't know how much time you spend on your visuals, but one thing is certain, it's that your work pays off. I really like the way you make the cars speed up and slow down with the landscape passing by like in the game. Nightfall then brings another atmosphere! Besides, I wonder how you manage to make snow fall (it's so beautiful!). Kali Lyon's drawings are always on point!
The introduction to your remix is very well done. I like how you add sound details referencing the original games. Once again, your choice of instruments is perfect. Especially since it coincides with the winter and festive atmosphere. The bells and the different sparkles are just magical! As mentioned in the description, you added references to other music. My favorite is the one at 1:13 (this is my favorite Mario Kart winter music). I think it's a very good choice to have done that, it adds something and recalls other music, which allows you to be more attentive.

I tremendously appreciate that you always provide such in-depth feedback on the visuals, as they're something I take a great deal of pride in. 😊 This video took about 12 hours to complete (at least, according to FL Studio's project info page), which surprised me a bit, because I would have guessed somewhere in the 15-18 hour range, since that's usually what it takes for videos with more involved animation. I'm hoping this is a sign that the process is becoming more efficient over time! But it's so heartening to hear that you feel it's been paying off, and that makes me as motivated ever to keep making the visuals a key aspect of each remix video - thank you!
I'm delighted that you liked how the cars moved around in different ways, speeding up, slowing down, and weaving in and out. That was definitely the thing that took the most work in this video, so it's really nice to hear that it had a great effect! One of the trickiest things about it was that I had to be mindful of how the racers were layered, so when they passed by each other, it made sense from the viewer's perspective. It was a lot of trial-and-error, but keeping some of the racers off-screen at times made it more manageable. Automating the racers' movements with the X and Y parameters easily took half of the total work time, so again, I'm super glad that you liked the racer movements!
Getting the environmental pieces to work was a bit tricky, too. I don't have any experience with animation outside of the ZGEV, so I was just sort of estimating how the objects would move at different speeds, based on their relative distances from the camera. Parallax movement is something I should really look into more in-depth for future videos, but Kali herself even mentioned that the movements of the snowmen, trees, and other background objects looked good, so I'll take it to mean that they were pretty on the mark! 😅 Thanks very much for mentioning Kali's artwork in such a complimentary way, and it means a lot that you always take the time to comment on her designs specifically.
As far as the night effect and snowfall, those were created using the "Solid color" and "FLuids" effects, respectively. For the night effect, I had a Solid color layer fade in to a medium level of transparency, with a slightly blue tone, which was applied to every layer except the racers and the neon lights, since they produced their own light in the night section. As for the snow effect, I used to use 2 instances of "It's Full of Stars" and have them angle downwards on the left and right sides, but FLuids has really become my top choice for any particle effects, because of how amazingly versatile it is. For this, I maxed out the "Nozzle X", "Nozzle Y", and "nSpread" parameters so the particles would cover the largest area possible. This allowed me to reduce the overall "Size" to about 50%, so the particles themselves wouldn't become too big. The "fLOWrATE" was kept at about 9% to keep things reasonable, and I used a downward "Gravity" (about 20%) to have the particles drift towards the ground, with about 7% "BirthFlow" for more dynamic movement, so they wouldn't just be travelling straight down. I noticed you used FLuids in your Frozen Factory remix video (which was fantastic, by the way), so I hope my explanation of how the snow effect was achieved provides a bit of useful info there!
Ah man, I'm tickled you enjoyed that intro segment with the beeps that are used at the start of each race. I had to pitch-shift those a bit to get them to match the key here, but they ended up fitting in just as I had hoped! I'm really happy that you liked the instrument choices, too, as these are some of my favorite sounds. Morphine has become one of my favorite plugins, with its array of lovely bell sounds "like Xmas Bell" and "Churchy Chime", which were both used here. The "Xmas Bell" preset in particular layers so nicely with different sounds, and it really feels like the MVP here, alongside "Dream Pack" from FLEX and the Keyzone Classic VST's default piano. Thank you for your kind words regarding the instrumentation!
And your mention of the different reference segments makes me happy, as well - very glad you enjoyed them! It's neat to learn that your favorite winter MK theme is GCN's Sherbet Land, and it's encouraging to know that these little musical throwbacks made the music more engaging to listen to - thanks for that feedback!

I agree that the sliding mechanics in certain ice levels could make for some really frustrating drifts - maddening, even. I have to admit, though, it also allowed for some pretty sick maneuvers, like jumping a gap in the ice while keeping a drift going. 🧊

The remarks about not being chad enough made me legit laugh out loud, and that certainly isn't the case here - you seem to know your way around a Mario Kart soundtrack! The other references are Snow Land (which is heard in recurring segments starting at 1:02), a variation of a short phrase from Rosalina's Ice World (at 1:06), and a bit of Vanilla Lake (at 1:22). Eventually, my piano teacher asked me what I _wanted_ to play, and I said that I just wanted to play Christmas music! (this was around March). So I did just that, and being able to play Christmas songs year-round preserved, and even renewed, my motivation to practice. Christmas music has always been among my favorite category in general, so seeing you say that Christmas music is right up my alley really hits home for me! 😊

Lovely remix, the atmosphere is perfect for the holiday mood, and at the same time it's nostalgic and somehow melancholic just like Christmas really is.

I had originally planned to upload this remix last week, actually, but I wasn't able to finish the video in time, and the extra week ended up being critical. I always want to have as consistent a schedule as possible, but not having a hard deadline is nice to have that flexibility sometimes. 😅

I really wanted this to have a lot of detail and embellishment, so it's really nice to hear that kind of feedback, especially coming from you.
