The Ruger Mini-14 vs Assault Weapons Bans

  • The Ruger Mini-14 is an outstanding little rifle. I've had mine for decades and I wouldn't part with it. This video proves that Mini-14s are reliable, handy, well made and can be made very accurate without much effort or money. In California, these little rifles are a great option for those who want a fully functional defensive rifle that is not banned or restricted.

    A lot of comments have stated that the Mini-14 is too expensive and that an AR15 is cheaper. Let's compare apples to apples rather than apples to oranges. The Mini-14 is a gas pistol operated action. It does not foul it's own action like a standard direct impingement AR15 does. Therefore, the Mini-14 action requires less cleaning and less maintenance. It is also less prone to failure due to fouling. The Mini-14 is available in stainless. Every medal part in a stainless Mini-14 is stainless steel. It is, therefore, less likely to rust or corrode. It also requires less maintenance than blued steel. Many parts in an AR-15 are steel and none are stainless. If we compare apples to apples, you must compare the price of a Mini-14 with a gas pistol AR-15, not with a direct impingement gun. Gas pistol ARs are MUCH more expensive on average than a stainless steel Mini-14 Ranch Rifle. I suppose that we could also compare the stainless steel Mini-14 with a stainless steel AR-15, but you would have to find one first and you can't. Lets go one step farther. The Mini-14 is not a home built gun that you pieced together yourself. Therefore, if we compare apples to apples we must compare the Mini-14 to a factory complete gas pistol AR-15. You will quickly discover that the Mini-14 is a bargain by comparison. For a stainless steel gas piston fighting rifle, the Mini-14 is a tremendous value and much less expensive than a quality gas pistol AR.

      Now it's a valid argument that the mini14 is a good choice under the current laws in California, however when comparing the ar15 with the mini 14 in a non restrictive state the ranch rifle pales in comparison under all circumstances. When comparing both rifles in practical application there's no real need to search out either a piston or fully stainless steel ar15. First the ar15 does not dump carbon directly into the chamber as many suggest but rather it dumps it out the side of the bolt carrier group behind the gas rings located on the bolt itself. while it is true the ar15 will be required to be cleaned more often than the mini, this is due to the tighter tolerances of the star chamber and 6 lug bolt head. This combined with the often heavier barrel is what contribute to the rifles superior accuracy potential. Also the reliability issues created by the ar15 operating system and locking system are often over played. on most factory ar15 the majority of stoppages are a result of magazine, case material, or user error not an insufficiently maintained gun. Basic rifle maintenance consisting of simply wipeing down the bolt and barrel after a range trip and storing in a dry place render any advantage the piston and stainless steel mini has in terms of reliability and corrosion resistance a moot point. the superior accuracy potential, customizability, and replacement part availability of your basic entry level ar15 balanced against the inherent flaws of the exposed action and guide rod rail found in the garand it is clear that the ar15 is the better choice for the average shooter. combine that with the fact that today you can get decent entry level ar15 at about the same price as a factory mini then the mini looses every time barring living in a ban state or just because you like that action, and to be honest if those are your reasons then that's more than enough, just don't try to tell me the mini is the better rifle.

      You are arguing against a point that I never made. I never stated that the Mini-14 is a better rifle than an AR15. I stated that if you compare apples to apples, the Mini-14 is not more expensive. In fact, it is less expensive. That was my point. If you want to debate a point that I've made, feel free. Just please stick to the points that I've made, not those which I have not.

    Thanks for the great video. I’m a New Hampshire resident and proudly own a 584 series mini thirty made right here in NH. I love that rifle and use it deer hunting. I have a 3-9 Leupold scope mounted on it with the Ruger scope rings that come with the gun. I don’t own a mini 14 but may add one to my collection. The mini thirty gets a lot of bad press for not liking steel case berdan primed ammo. I installed a Wolf hammer spring in my gun and it seems to have resolved that issue. But it’s not a big deal to me anyway as I use Winchester brass case ammo for hunting.

    I have a Mini-14 rifle which I purchased here in Arkansas and that gun was taken to California with my other guns and I sold one .44 magnum rifle due to the gun jamming, but kept the Mini-14 and it is very accurate and I tried hunting with it and found that it was not a gun for that after tearing up two squirrels I shot with it, and one snake which I shot it's head off with that rifle. I got in 1976 and the gun has stamped on the side: Made in the 200th year of American Liberty". The only other gun I love more than the Mini-14 is the modified AK-47 (AK-90) with the modified stock .

    Not in California, but have a Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle bought in 1999; 195 series. The rifle is utterly reliable, never a jam, hardly ever has to be cleaned. Shot 80 rounds yesterday of .223 and 5.56, performed great, but when the barrel gets hot after about 5 rounds, the groups open up. I also swapped the wooden stock for a Hogue over molded synthetic stock and like it a lot. I did not put an accustrut on it though. This gun is an absolute keeper!

    I have 3 of them. One is like yours with the thin barrel and accu-strut. I bought it in unfired condition in a private sale 3 years ago for only $550. Another one is the heavy barrel target version and my 3rd one is a 300 aac blackout version. I've fired the one like you have over 10,000 times and never had a single jam and 99% of what I shoot is my homemade cast lead and powder coated bullets. Even after not cleaning the gun for 8 months and shooting 5,000+ rds through it I never had a single jam. The ar15 wins when it comes to the modularity aspect, but the mini 14 is super reliable and easy to maintain.

    Nice vid. I have a newer 583 series and shoot similar groups. I have found it to be very reliable and, like you, more accurate than I am. I've had a trigger job (down to 3.3 lbs), shimmed the stock, buffers front and rear, use TechSights (or a red dot), and changed the gas port to a .50 so my brass stay in the same county. The shooting experience is now much smoother so I can work on my marksmanship. Love shooting it. Hope to see more Mini 14 vids. Thanks.

    • @photobuzz
      @photobuzz Před 7 lety +3

      Hi Eric, I also have a 583 series, a stainless steel tactical carbine with a 16 inch barrel. I also had a trigger / action job done and trigger pull is about the same as yours. I put mine in an Archangel Precision stock and topped it with a 3x9 scope. If I do my part, from a rest, at 100 yards, it'll shoot 1 1/2 inch or smaller groups all day. By all day, I mean that after an hour or more of shooting it still holds that group size. I owned four other Minis, from the early 70s into the mid 80s and they were tough, reliable guns and fun to shoot. The down side with each of them was the fact that they would heat up with little shooting and then groups would open up and wander or scatter. Which is the reason I sold and replaced each one. Towards 1990, I gave up and moved on to other semi auto .223s which didn't exhibit this problem. I always liked the Mini 14 and missed owning one. Then, around 2009, I started reading articles the said that Ruger had made several modifications to the MIni and that they now held a group after warming up. So, back in 2011 I decided to try a new Mini 14 and bought my carbine and the rest, as they say, is history. I really love the Mini 14 and with the improvements Ruger made to the design it's the equal of any semi auto .223 I've ever owned (and I've owned many) and better than most.

One advantage is the simple operation if you need to bring someone else up to speed quickly, say as in arm up your neighbors if things get silly. An AR has a bit too many bits and bobs and easily newbies forget. Yeah I think about if things get silly, not much but I do.

    Great video, GunGuy. I agree with what you say about the Mini. They are robust (over engineered), reliable, fun, rifles. I owned several between about 1970 and 1985. Loved them all, but couldn't accept the fact that groups totally went to crap as they warmed up, which didn't take long. After selling my last one, in the late '80s, I, sadly, moved on to other semi auto .223s. Since the Mini 14 was an affordable semi auto, I didn't want to spend more money on it, trying to get it to hold a group. Then, around 2009, I read several articles saying that Ruger had made improvements to the design and new Minis didn't exhibit this problem. So, I was excited to buy a new, 16 inch barreled, stainless steel, Tactical Carbine in 2011. Out of the box, it delivered sub two inch groups and would do the same after an hour of shooting. Needless to say, I was very happy. So, when I knew that I was going to keep the Mini, I had a trigger / action job done on it, put it in an Archangel Precision stock and topped it with a 3x9 scope. Now, if I do my part, from a rest, at 100 yards it'll consistently shoot 1 1/2 inch or smaller groups with any ammo. Just for a little background, I'm a retired Certified Law Enforcement Firearms instructor and Certified Law Enforcement Armorer. I've built many nice AR-15s over the years, both for myself and for others. Since getting my Mini 14 Tactical Carbine, I've sold my personal AR-15s as my Mini is as good as it gets and all I need.

    Joel, I've got an old style Mini-14 myself, years before they even came out with the Accu strut I started reloading for that rifle trying to find myself an accurate recipe. What I found was that the old style Mini 14's prefer heavier bullets, I started using 69 grain bullets and got my grouping from 6 1/2 inches at 100 yards down to .479 at 100 yards 3 shots. It took me quite some time to find this recipe though, I think I was testing recipes almost 1 1/2 years and around 120 or so different recipes before I came across this one. I love my mini 14, wouldn't trade it for the world. Great video, keep up the great work!

    • @TheRealGunGuyTV
      @TheRealGunGuyTV  Před 7 lety +3

      I've found exactly the same thing. Mine prefers bullet weights of 69 grains and above. I've read that the rifling in the older Mini's can over rotate lighter bullets causing them to be unstable. I checked my rifling once and found that mine has a 1 in 7 twist rate. By comparison, I think the new models are 1 in 9.

    • @jungblud59
      @jungblud59 Před 7 lety

      GunGuyTV that's pretty close to what I remember too, except I was thinking 1:8" rifling twist, but I'm not positive. Either way, they prefer heavier bullets. I've been thinking about trying the Accu strut, but I'm not sure it would would work on my mini 14 in its current configuration. I have installed a center balance Bullpup stock on it, and I don't think the Accu strut System would work in there. I'd have to look.

    one factor to look at in regards to the mini14 and SKS in defensive use in urban/suburban environments--a long shot is likely to be within 25 yards since it would be hard to justify a shot that is much out of handgun range

      Yeah. I fled California after high school in 1974 returning to my native Arizona. Were I still there I would jump on a mini in a skinny minute. Ruger and S&W are selling AR's now for under $600. DPMS sub $500. If I find a mini in that price range I would be tempted to purchase as a fun/truck gun. Just can't justify it right now. Guess I'm stuck in the want versus need loop familiar to many gun owners:)

I live in the Central Valley of CA and when it's all said and done, a stainless Mini-14 is near $1,000. The only good thing that came out of the anti- AR/AK laws was that Mini's are back in the spotlight. Used to be around here you could only find a new one at Big 5 sporting goods. Hardly any of the gun shops sold them.
