This is Day 2 of our food culture trip in Laos, if you haven’t seen Khmu Food Part 1, you can watch it here:
We woke up naturally to the sounds in the early morning and sat around and hung out, just enjoying the fresh cool are. We strolled around the Khmu village for a little while before we packed up and headed to a Hmong village not too far away.
When I reached out to you during my trip to Laos and asked you for suggestions one what I should eat or cover, many of you said I should try Hmong food. Now Hmong restaurant are not that common, so the best way to eat Hmong food is to go to a local family home and have them cook. Along with Alex from White Elephant Adventures (www.white-elephant-adventures-..., he was able to arrange it for us.
Our Hmong meal was buffalo, all types and variations. The two main and favorite Hmong food dishes they made were raw buffalo with a huge amount of bile, and cooked buffalo with raw blood. We also had some buffalo stew, soup, and roasted buffalo.
Probably the most fascinating thing to me about Hmong culture and food as opposed to most of Laos is that Hmong typically eat white steamed rice as opposed to sticky rice. And unlike just about every other culture I’ve witnessed in Asia, where you get your own bowl of rice and share all the side dishes, in Hmong culture you have a communal bowl of rice and share everything. It may seem different to Western culture, but it really brings out a sense of family and community.
The food was awesome, all things buffalo. I especially liked the raw buffalo with bile, that was the best Hmong food of the meal.
It was an amazing day and I learned a lot about Hmong food, a quick introduction. Thank you for watching!

among all of the asian ethnicities. Hmong is the most i'm interested to learn about the culture. their unfortunate past and the awesome people always amazes me. i also heard they have blue eyed people. that's so cool! Philippines loves hmong people.
Bronze Hachi ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Bronze Hachi ❤❤❤❤
Love, right back at ya!
Philipines knows Hmong people? That's cool. And people still don't know about Iu Mien/Mien people. I'm a fellow Mien person btw.
Claymore007 not a lot because there is so many different types of Hmong mixed background. Hmong Chinese, Hmong Thai, Hmong Lao and so on. Mien that I know of is Hmong Chinese known for beauty and singing talent... I heard from native Chinese people when I was in China. But yes there is mien than live in Thailand or Lao. Still to this day I am very curious to where exactly Hmong people originated or how we became.
Showcasing foods from the busiest cities to the remote villages is one of the reasons why I love your videos. Your kindness towards all people and intrigue about food and cultures is heartwarming.
Thank you Elizabeth!
You pretty sum up the reason I and most people luv his channel
it's common in Hmong culture to eat from the same bowl and double-triple dip. it's not the most sanitary way to eat but hopefully you have a strong immune system. Even Hmong people in the United States still eat from the same bowl when there is an event. we have a saying food taste better eating with a lot of people
ummm ,,, am sorry- it doesn't look good but very interesting
I’m thinking that it’s more about the experience and the kindness of the people rather than how the food may look or taste.....
If I could, I give this a 10,000 thumbs up. Thanks for visiting the Hmong people. I cried a little during the scene where you guys visited the school. You have so many Hmong fans in America and you made all of us so Happy.

Thankyou so much Mark for visiting the hmong people. I am Hmong and I am proud to be hmong. Even though we are just a small group of people in Laos, you manage to visit us and show the world that we exist as well. Thankyou so much. Much love from Australia😁♥️
This is so awesome! Being Hmong living on the other side of the world(U.S.), we rarely get the opportunity to see how our other Hmong brothers and sisters live in the motherland. We appreciate you for doing this and allowing us a glimpse into the lives of our fellow Hmong people still living in Southeast Asia. Thanks Mark! This was an awesome episode. This was a learning experience for a Hmong American as well!
^Puts things into perspective doesn't it? Hopefully more younger Hmong people in the states remember that cause all I mostly hear most of the time is how much they hate Lao, Viet or sometimes Thai people. Most of the overseas Hmong immigrated from Laos and when you see all the delicious foods your elders prepare, certain customs, dances, etc...to hate on Laos is kind of disrespecting your parents too! Like it or not, before immigrating into the West, for most Hmong, Laos was the only home they ever knew! Not to sweep history under the rug, but no world government is perfect. Without the political turmoil that unfolded in mainland Southeast back in the 60s through early 80s, most Lao, Viet, Cambodian and Hmong would live very a humble existence like a lot of these people throughout Southeast Asia. Count your blessings you get a chance to either start over or grew up in the West.
American Hmong, please visit your ancestor land in Laos, and donate some money to school
"Taste better when eaten together"
You are right. It taste way better when the whole family eats together ❤
I’m Hmong and I usually eat Hmong food time to time, but if you haven’t ate anything for a while and you see Hmong food being cook at that moment of family gatherings, you’re in a hell of a buffet of satisfying, delicious, and whole-hearty food. Just ask your Hmong friends if you can attend their “Jingle Bell” one day. Done it for all my Latino, black, and white friends and they always come back for more. Specially purple sticky rice 😍😍
I get coworkers asking me where to buy Hmong food. I told them if you are looking for authentic Hmong food, you need a Hmong friend that will invite you to weddings, jingle bells, funerals or a gathering. That's the only way you can get real authentic hmong food.
Hmong helped our boys in Vietnam. Bless em.

Yes we did, we actually help suffocate the ho chi minh trail and save a lot of American lives.

I love how respectful you are when you show us other culture.
This food vlog channel is one of its kind. In fact, Mark's channel has become something more than just a food vlog channel. I wish Mark keeps doing what he does best and bring us more videos like these. I wish I can travel like Mark one day. 😊🤗 Looking forward for the African Vlog. 👍👍
I’ve been watching your CZcams videos from eating all sorts of different ethnicities and I’m so happy that you’ve finally eating Hmong food. I’m also Hmong. I was so excited for this episode! Thank you for the video, it makes you appreciate where we come from and know that we might not have a country like others but we still have our own food!
You so Beautiful
I love this guy! He brings the world to us from the comfort of our homes! God bless you and your beautiful family Mark! May you always have a smile on your face!
Thank you Mark for doing this! I am Hmong American and it is great to see my people! This is so nostalgic for my grandma and Dad!
Sure made my mouth watery!
you are the reason i started enjoying every food.
Thank you Mr. Wiens for spending your value time to taste our Hmong tribe food. I know our Hmong foods will not have alot of ingredients in it,but I was apreciate that you allowing yourself to try our mountain tribe foods. Thank you every much from Alaska U. S. A
Great feature for the Hmong. Communal meals are a given, it doesn't matter if we are family or not, you will have a seat at the table. Like many ethnicities who are known to migrate, our dishes are highly influenced by the regions we settle into. However the simple boiled pea dish you were served is what many resort to as a form of comfort food, and it closer reflects our traditional dishes that our ancestors preferred or grew acccostumed to as part of being hill tribes with minimal variety of foods.
Anyhow, we really appreciate that you sought out authentic Hmong dishes, you're awesome! Thanks for your efforts!
Mark you have special place in heaven. What a wonderful man you really are. To see their happy faces when they were handed the pencils it was a true happy moment. We take so much for granted. God bless you all!
Thank you very much Leonaza!
I love how open Mark is to trying food from a wide range of cultures!

Thanks Mark I really appreciate you trying Hmong food in a video. I'm Hmong and I grew up in the states so it's nice to see videos of Hmong people in Laos. I've been subscribed for a few years now and I love your videos! I'm so excited for everything you eat!
Proud to be hmong. Most will think its gross to share from the same bowl. But that's what love looks like. We share what we have and give even when we can't. I can't speak for all, but if that's how do it! Coming from nothing. Thank you mark!
Thank you so much for sharing your travels. I love the Hmong community. A gentle, peaceful, loving community.
Wow this felt like watching a documentary, with added food bonus!
The best thing I liked was the school children and providing them with school stationary. We all can do something to bring change in our communities would have loved to be there and inter act with kids.
Mark ua tsag for taking me home. When I lived in MN for several years I worked Hmong children who were my students. Often times we shared meals together and I always felt like part of the family sharing bowls of rice. Thank you...Koj mus koj.
mark wiens i love the fact that you took your time to give back to that community, you getting close to the kids n surporting them just touched n moved me. God is about to bless you big time
The best part of this 📽Micha playing with the kids 😍😍😍you guys are awesome parents 👏🏻📽👍
Thank you, Mark for sharing part of my culture with the world! The Hmong people are hard workers and I’ve never tired any of these dishes before, but I might have to now! I hope you have an amazing trip in Laos and explore the country and learn a lot!
As a first generation born Hmong American, this makes my heart happy. The Hmong communal way of eating still holds today in Hmong American homes. This is an exact representation of how Hmong people set the tables and just share from the dishes. We here in the usa, utilize plates, but this is definitely how my mommas/grandma’s table is set when we’re all together. We love our boiled greens/meats, and the simplicity of a vegetable boil. And us eating white jasmine rice instead of sticky sets us apart from our Lao/Thai counterparts. Thanks for this video Mark! Im such an avid fan of you and your little family. Many blessings to yall ❤️ Thanks for sharing a piece of our culture and a little bit of home for the ones who are american born.
Mark, I've watched most of your videos, but this is honestly my favourite one. Thanks for such a great video!
Mark as usual excellent video. It was pleasure watching the team visit the community school.I appreciate. Good job done !!! Thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up!! God bless you with continued success!!!

I'm Hmong and I loved visiting Laos! Some of the best and freshest foods! Glad you got to visit and experience Hmong food and culture!! The rice and pork in bamboo is the best! I miss eating unique food in Laos! #lovebeingahmong
Thank you, Mark Wiens, for presenting some of my culture's food and enjoying it! I always enjoy watching your videos!
Hmong means Free! Humbleness is definitely in our blood. Not a lot of people know our people. Thank you for the exposure. I shared this video on my social media. ❤️❤️❤️
I've seen our people to be quite ethical when it counts but still wonder what we would be like if we had our own country
animetorr xyooj I see where you’re going with this but in truth, there are many minorities who have not been discovered and I’m sure of it that they too deserve their own country. But we must make of what we have or don’t have.
Just my opinion but I really don't think our people are that concerned about our own culture these days, myself included. I feel like our way of life is quite impractical so we just adapt to our modernized environmental cultures/traditions, wherever that may be. I wish our culture cared more about each other but I only see the same thing in ours as I do in modern society. The typical immediate family first above all else for obvious reasons. I'll cut to the chase and just best describe my mind. Jesus is the ultimate hero and role model, not any one human lol
animetorr xyooj I respect your concerns. Being first generation in the states, I can see a lot changes. I think you should look me up on fb if you want to discuss this further.
I'm actually quite curious as to what you have to say lol. Can't promise you I will change my mind about this but you can add me, I'm Xob Xyoob on fb
Thank you for featuring my culture on this episode of your food travel.
Can't believe Micah is feeding himself...he's growing so fast and it's awesome to be able to journey along as he is growing in front of our eyes.
You're welcome, thank you for your support Hadassah.
I saw him sneak in a little kiss on that girl too.. little playa... :D

Love it Mark, I’m so happy you shared a part of my culture. Best wishes.
Hmong Food Finally, I am Hmong I have been waiting for this video for a long time :) Thanks Mark Wiens!
I like the fact that the food vloggers in youtube each have their own trademarks for content ( at least in my understanding). Mark- specialty restaurant, villages and such. Trevor - street foods. Mike chen - buffet. All that makes their content not boring even though they visit the same destinations :) Keep it up you guys !!!! Amazing content always
Just came across this video and I loved it so much! Thank you for going into this with such a great attitude towards Hmong food and culture ♡ nothing makes me happier than to see people so excited to learn more about Hmong people.

Mark Wiens, are you being truly honest of your compliments about the various foods you have tried? If you are, you must love all foods on Earth!!!
Hello Mark, Ying, little guy Micah, Joel, and Alex! This is a very interesting experience of food and culture! The communal bamboo hut or house remind you a long house of native Indian of North America! Also native people South America in an Amazon live communal lifestyle!
Aww, I saw Micah eating and I think hes gonna have his own Yummy face. Lol So adorable!
Thank you for this hmong video! I myself am hmong. So it was very special to see you go into the hmong village and enjoy a meal with them.
Love this video, Mark! Thank you for visiting the Hmong village and sharing your experiences with us. My heart broke watching the kids at school and a little girl towards the end of the video in a dirty torn dress as happy as can be. Glad to have watched this video and how gracious you were to our people. Thank you and god bless!
Thank you for featuring Hmong food! Come to the U.S., we also have great tasting Hmong American food as well! St. Paul, MN is a great city to showcase our cuisine!

I am Hmong from the United States, originally from Laos. I am happy to see you visited Hmong village and most importantly testing Hmong foods.
Many Americans view us in a way it is hard to imagine but Hmong people are very nice and down to earth type of people. Welcome to Hmong house. Please come back anytime.

I'm Hmong and I never thought our food would seem weird...until now hahaha. Thank you for this video Mark!
PaHoua Vang same! Had to think about it again cause we grew up seeing this as a normal dish to have at some point.
Better than TV shows...
林荣豪Max Lim yup plus no ads
Yeah
Mark, thanks for showing us some of these unsung heros, the farmers and villagers. They are humble and hard working group of people, who unconditionally work day and nights to ensure agricultural produces and goods are plenty for the city people. They work only to feed their families, not making a profit. They seem happy. I believe you might feel it wholeheartedly when eating the food and talking to them. I have tremendous respects for farmers and villagers. The stories that these videos show keep me grounded, humbled and appreciative of what I have. Thank you Mark, keep doing what you do; tell cultural stories through food and travel.
great video, must have been such a wonderful experience 🙏 wow...thanks for sharing this experience!!

The English guy took such a small amount of the blood stew!! He looks like the kind of guy that might have a secret stash of baked beans ' just in case'!!
This cracked me up. My western friends would starve if this is what I serve them. Ok...I would too, and I'm Hmong! Mark is brave.
