  • Rimsky-Korsakov's Skazka (Fairy Tale) performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Constant Lambert and recorded at the Kingsway Hall, London, on 30 January 1946.
Busmen in Barrow-in-Furness were on strike, Britain's coal mines were about to be nationalised, and that was the last week that housewives could buy dried egg as the USA would no longer supply it.
But my reason for uploading this is quite different. I transferred it from the original Columbia black label 78s in about 1971, aged about fourteen. The transfer was to reel-to-reel tape, using a late-1940s cartridge and stylus mounted on a piece of wood, and feeding into the amplifier of the tape recorder. Many years later I found the tape, digitised it, cleaned it up a bit - and promptly forgot it.
The illustration, by Dmitri Mitrokhin (1883-1973), was made for Arthur Ransome's book 'Old Peter's Russian Tales', published in 1916.

It's what I attempted to play you on my phone. This is much easier to listen to ;-)
